  • Ones and Tooze cohosts Adam Tooze and Cameron Abadi recorded this episode live in New York City. The show begins with a segment on Adam himself-how he came to be an economic historian and what political and philosophical tenets underpin his writing. Cameron and Adam also discuss the malign influence of billionaire Peter Thiel on American politics, and the declining importance of Wall Street as a place to hang out your shingle.

For those who have followed Tooze's career from his days as an accomplished but quite recognizable historian of 20th century Germany/Europe to understand his transformation into an über-productive trans-Atlantic 'pundit' and American-based liberal media darling it's worth wading through all the hagiography in this interview.
Tooze offers a fascinating admixture of complex continental-style inter-disciplinary method and theory of history, a seemingly encyclopedic general knowledge base coupled with a defence of privilege. But one thing that became clear to me through this interview is how his personal and career arc followed his intellectual inclinations. His unique take on Europe in the first half of the 20th century was to see it as refracted through the rise of American hegemony. But the twist is that for Tooze to find his professional 'sweet spot', he needed to move to American and have his life refracted through the same hegemony that had long inspired his sense of contemporary historical imagination.

What a fancy way of describing "Tooze as a Brit has been Americanized"
i.e. it is meant as a compliment 😄

@@AndikaRPutra-hl7ix It' meant descriptively not judgementally. Everyone is free to interpret whether transition is for better or worse.

Nah. Like Marxism seduced by your own poetic irony. How has his intellectual development been influenced by American thought? Hasn't has it? So your sounding good but talking shite really aren't you?

What do you mean by the defense of privilege? Is that the defense of his sort of intellectual elite in the face of populism?
