Polunin shows us how well he dances. Baryshnikov dances. Polunin performs the steps brilliantly, but he's showing off; for example, the pianist has to slow down every time he leaps. Baryshnikov creates the music for us with his body; he could leap higher, and stay up in the air longer - we've all seen him do it - but it would distort the music, so he wouldn't think of it. Polunin executes steps and shows us the choreography. Baryshnikov lets the choreography come through him; he is having a good time, is emotionally involved, is open to the world; he invites us to be joyous with him. Now, I know my analysis is too black and white. It's not like Polunin isn't good. No, indeed. He's fantastically accomplished, and I appreciate the ways his body moves. I respect Polunin tremendously. But I love Baryshnikov.
Completely agree! As an artist Misha just seems so much more emotionally mature. With Polunin it seems like it's just about his personal artistry and suffering. With Misha and other truly great artists, it's how they take in the suffering and joy of the world.

I fell in love with Baryshnikov’s dancing back in the 70s but what impresses me now is that he has continued to grow as an artist over the last 40+ years. As recently as 2019 (at age 71) he was still performing avant-garde theatre. He no longer does the big leaps but he still brings heart and soul to the work. I love seeing him scruffy and wrinkled and seeming to have no ego about “looking his age” when so many stars won’t be seen without nips, tucks, and makeup designed to hide their reality. Misha simply defies the laws of physics. I've compared his dances along side other greats, but no one comes close to his effortless power. How can anyone jump so high and not make a sound when he lands? How can anyone spin with such speed and precision? Add to that his unmatched expression, acting ability, and athletic prowess, and all other dancers...no matter how well trained..seem like they are working at it.
Really? I mean overall misha is the most expressive and effortless but when it comes to jumping sergei wins because he literally floats and defeats gravity regarding jumps sergei really is one of s kind in my opinion :)

Baryshnikov precision is just on another level. There is no gelling together of movement. It’s like if you took a picture there would never be a blur from one movement to the next. He registers every movement like no one I’ve ever seen before.

I've just become aware of Polunin (I don't follow ballet generally) and there is no question but that he is technically amazing, but I don't get the feeling (as I do with other great ballet artists) of his personality or personal charisma. His charisma comes simply from his extraordinary abilities. Nureyev, Baryshnikov, Godunov - I can relate to them as to the personalities they were, and their personalities, in turn, were the basis for their charisma. Watching Polunin I am just amazed at his skill and athleticism but I don't feel an attraction to him as a personality.
Wow!! Baryshnikov has such a fun, playfulness in addition to everything else that has been said, the musicality, his artistic interpretation is so unique - no one has out-danced him yet!!! When Polunin choreographs his own dances, his artistry and musicality come through much better.
Both excellent, but, to me, Polunin looks like he's dancing, and Baryshnikov looks like he's just being. One is showing great skill and effort, the other is moving the way he was created to move and it appears effortless.
Baryshrikov is more precise and sharp to the music. He is deeply merge to the beats and melody with his movements, even the shoves on his shoulders are more expressive. He is still the master.

And at age 22, Polunin quits! Didn’t like to practice he says in an interview. While Misha spent his entire life working at ballet. Overseeing the ABT, mixing modern, jazz, Sinatra with dance. I watched Misha from the front row at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu in 1985. He took my breath away! I was sitting one seat down from Tom Selleck who was huge in Magnum PI at the time. Selleck married a dancer from “Cats.” I thought I would be distracted by Selleck...but once Misha ran on stage, the whole world vanished and I could only see Misha! My god he’s good!

You couldn't describe it better, Misha devoted his life to his art and Polunin (who I honestly like so much) preferred a modeling and acting career because he thinks ballet is not well paid enough to make that much sacrifice :/
Seeing this "mirror performance" reminds me (all of us?) once again the subtleties of music, of dance, of expression. Could any of us fault Polunin? I think not. But then you see Baryshnikov and realize you've seen something the same yet very different. The dance movement comes from the music he feels instinctively in his body. Not only the perfect technical movements but the gestures, the emphases, the totality that shows the music through Baryshnikov's embodiment, literally.
Baryshnikov has more flair especially in the upper body and those little head movements to punctuate his moves make his dancing much more pleasing to watch. He is also more centered when he turns. As many have mentioned, you can feel the music when he dances. He makes you more involved, a more complete experience than Polunin's. And he did not trip.
I hate negativity online, but I just have to ask why would this kid try to beat the greatest dancer that has ever existed? It’s like watching a cover band of a great musician! There is no comparison. Maybe that is what made him leave dance. Baryshnikov’s entire soul is dance, and he could never leave it! As Baryshnikov has always said: “ I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself” ‘
Baryshnikov is 10 times more expressive to me, weaving the steps into the dance & one feels the pulsating rhythm & joy - & humor! With Serge, it just looks like he’s executing steps - very good technically, but not very expressive. Baryshnikov takes you with him! Serge just says “watch this” & so you are relegated to spectator instead of participant. I believe that is what makes a true artist - they take you with them, to another place - it’s very spiritual- you FEEL something!

There's some about Baryshnikov that just makes you BELIEVE him. He's very restrained. Yet exceptionally present. I just can't put my finger on it. But he's just perfect. Polunin is a great dancer, but I'm never sure what his arms are doing. I think he jumps higher, but at a risk of taking me out of the spell of the dance. Interesting comparing them, which I don't usually like to do in Art, but it's very obvious to me that Baryshnikov is the better. I wish that I could see Sylvie Guillem and Baryshnikov together.

For me the true difference boils down to passion. Baryshnikov loved and wanted to be an artist in ballet, Polunin has always struggled on fully investing in ballet. He has all the ingredients, but if it’s not in his heart, it is what it is.
Polunin could be seventeen times better than Baryshnikov in technique, but Misha moves as one with the music, both literally and figuratively. He captures the character of the piece in flick of his legs, the tilt of his head, the cockiness of his smile and his obvious immersion in the piece. Sergei is technically wonderful, although my subjective opinion is that, while his jumps are higher, it's only because his legs are physically longer than Misha's. When he dances, though, he has a one-size-fits-all smile fixed on his face and has no personality coming through. At least not in the same quirky way Misha does. I'd hire Baryshnikov.
No my friend, he is not 17 times better than Baryshnikov in technique. Because of the incomparable technique of Baryshnikov he is able to perform the superhuman feeds. The one who competes with him has a lesser technique. His muscles are not as strong, his turn-out not as relentless, his feet not as articulate. Therefore, he is a weaker, less interesting dancer than Baryshnikov, the incomparable. It’s dancing looks feminine in comparison because he has not entered the rigor creating the technique of Baryshnikov.
Misha is incomparable. His movements link together to create a smooth and fluid continuity whereas Polunin has noticeable preparations in between moves. Misha also has more line and style. I think it is hard to appreciate Polunin when you are comparing the two. It makes Polunin's body look over extended. It is hard to compare to a legend.
Baryshnikov is artistic, his body seems to have more strengh and agility. He is great! Although Serguei is a very special dancer and has beautiful and Strong technic I like the energy in Baryshnikov better.
I so love Baryshnikov's musicality. He will not sacrifice a single beat of music to turn more, jump higher or to prepare and secure his technique. Of course when you are such a spectacular virtuoso it's easier I suppose, but I find it sad that the amazing dancers of today choose to show off over being musical. Polunin, though, is not like that, thankfully.

Misha is just beyond words
And at age 22, Polunin quits! Didn’t like to practice he says in an interview.
While Misha spent his entire life working at ballet. Overseeing the ABT, mixing modern, jazz, Sinatra with dance.
I watched Misha from the front row at the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu in 1985. He took my breath away! I was sitting one seat down from Tom Selleck who was huge in Magnum PI at the time. Selleck married a dancer from “Cats.”
I thought I would be distracted by Selleck...but once Misha ran on stage, the whole world vanished and I could only see Misha! My god he’s good!
i
You couldn't describe it better, Misha devoted his life to his art and Polunin (who I honestly like so much) preferred a modeling and acting career because he thinks ballet is not well paid enough to make that much sacrifice :/
Baryshinikov incomparable!
Fluidity, precision, drama, interpretation, living out the music. No one compares with Baryshnikov. Polunin is athletic but unrelatable.
Baryshnikov says, Com'on let's dance, and then I dance.
Polunin says, Hi look at me, and then I watch.
Sergei is realy good, but for Michail there isn 't any gravity in this world. He makes dancing look easy and simple.
For polunin thwre is no gravity too....
I only try to dance better than myself”
‘
Misha is the dance while Polunin performs the choreography impeccably.
Sergei is great.Misha is BRILLIANT.
Mikhail's dancing is so graceful and he makes it look effortless. Can't compare anyone else to him no matter how great they are, just not fair to them
There is no comparison. Barishnikov is an artist, Polunin has great technique.
Baryshnikov's musicality!
Baryshnikov always has this air of mischief about him. Both great dancers.
I’m no expert in any way shape or form, but it seems like Mikhail just “snaps” his moves. Just feels more appealing.
They both are incredibly talented for sure but there is something about Baryshnikov performance ..you can feel the vibes ..he is one with music
Misha IS the dance and the dance IS Misha
For me there is only Baryshnikov. For me, there is no one like him.
he is one of a kind for certain.
I agree
Baryshnikov just flows like a butterfly 🦋
For me the true difference boils down to passion. Baryshnikov loved and wanted to be an artist in ballet, Polunin has always struggled on fully investing in ballet. He has all the ingredients, but if it’s not in his heart, it is what it is.
Perfection. One in technique, one in technique, style and sheer magnetism. Talk about defying gravity!
Hard to compare ANYONE to Baryshnikov.
I'd hire Baryshnikov.
in his dreams .l am old enought to have seen live misha at his top in 75 77 and 79 and he was better technician than polunin
@@clairstberry5315 no one said he is. The comment said he could be. Or i guess could have been.
Although Serguei is a very special dancer and has beautiful and Strong technic I like the energy in Baryshnikov better.
misha has grace, Sergei is mechanical next to him and I'm a huge fan of Sergei's. But I ADORE MISHA!
+Kelly Antoniadou yes polunin is good ,but misha was misha ,
+pediatrapaola Agreed!
Can I quote you on this?
agree with your idea of dancers of today...
Polunin is great. Barishnikov is GOD.
Great execution but Polunin has no theatre. Baryshnikov displays both brilliantly.
