Why we like the unexpected Surface Go 2

  • Microsoft's mini Surface returns with a bigger screen and more power. The keyboard and Surface Pen are still not included (and oddly, it runs "Windows 10 in S Mode") but the tablet is still a welcome addition to Microsoft's Surface lineup in 2020.

      Samsung S6 lite is good for notes - its cheaper and includes pen which need not be charges.. $350 for (tablet + pen included).

    I got the 1st surface go with the lowest specs about 6 months ago and I wouldn't replace it for any other 2 in 1. It's SUPER portable, fun to use and so handy for my Fine Arts University degree.despite what reviews say it can still run proper drawing programs like Krita. Glad to see a 2nd version of a device I love

    I have the first Go and I love it. I have my own work laptop, so I don't need anything as big as 13" as a second portable device. But I need to do work on it, so I love that I can have a device running the same OS (I got win10 pro on my surface go). It works well for light programming, and even for teaching online lectures. And IT FITS IN MY PURSE. I love it and I hope it will have a deserved success on the market. No other device out there offers portability + a PC operating system and it's really well made.

      I think this new Surface Go 2 actually nails just the right amount of bezel for a tablet, at least from what I can see over UA-cam demonstrations. (Can’t exactly try it out in a Best Buy right now.)

    I've got the original Surface Go, and I love it... I still use my laptop at home, but the Go and my laptop are all synced up through OneDrive. It's soooo easy to keep my work going while I'm out and about :) I'd like to add that Windows 10 S Mode isn't so bad anyways... I kept mine in S Mode for a long time, but had to pull it out, ironically, to install Microsoft Teams (some idiot upstairs canned the store version) ...But I still live by the principles of S Mode. I always check the store first for any apps, and give serious thought to anything from outside the store. Those principles have kept my little Surface Go going just as fast today as it was the day I bought it ;)

      I really like the idea of S Mode. But Microsoft really needs to step up heavily to make store better. It's still the worst app store available unfortunately. Which is shame as "store competitor" Xbox application is pretty damn good these days. I wish though that MS would moderate it's store in future better as I absolutely hate many stores cause of their let's be honest, completely meaningless apps. By far worst being Nintendo Switch store that seems to have many free android games in it's store with huge price tags. I don't understand how they've gotten around it.

    The 4GB 64GB eMMC Surface Go 2 is absolutely fine for Office 365, email, Netflix, UA-cam, MS edge. Multiple web pages, full blown multiple Excel, Word, PowerPoint files, multiple UA-cam channels can be opened at the same time. It reads and writes to a microSD card pretty fast. So, for a secondary PC it's worth it for business users / office goers. As a primary PC, the screen size might be a bit of a limiting factor. Overall, it's a great device even in it's lowest configuration for the type of usage mentioned above.

    Surface reviews are apparently easy money for people in this industry. Seriously, Watch _any_ review of a Surface product and they _all_ hit the same beats. Repetitive complaints about the keyboard not being in the box. Repetitive complaints about the Windows Store. Repetitively unfavorable comparisons to the iPad. Repetition of any negative, discriminatory, biasing POV that can be mustered right before a damning with faint praise, half-hearted "recommendation" for any who can stomach such a device.
    Nobody who actually knows what they are talking about actually reviews the devices. I know a lot of people who know how to use a thermometer, a stethoscope, and a blood pressure cuff. None of them are doctors. It requires a specialized skill set to take the information you can get from those devices and make use of it to improve or protect someone's health. If a person just commented on the present state of the numbers and concluded someone was sick based on how high or low the numbers were they would not be giving good health advice.
    That is all this and most other reviewers do. "Here's another Surface, it does this and that but, hey, the iPad is more popular. If you wanna be 'that guy' get this instead. You do you"
    The end.
    It would be really nice if CNET put more effort into making its reviews useful for the general public. More expertise and less heavy on the tech myths.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 4 роки тому +5

      Yes, agree, the Surface Go is not for everyone, but it is for people that understand what it is and that it will fit into their workflow. Of course, the base model is limited, and that it is really only for light tasks, but if that is okay then it will work. The main reason is clearly the size, there is not much out there in Windows land with that form factor, 10-inches never really sold on Windows devices, but I am sure there is a small and niche market that appreciate that MS has not forgotten them.
      Personally, I see it as a secondary device, dinky and neat for just doing the stuff you need when on the go. No doubt an iPad would be as good for that workload, but some people just prefer Windows. We are better off having it and although not perfect, I wish battery life was better, and that the M3 model was a tad cheaper, it is comparable with an iPad Air (M3 Version) and the iPad 7 ( -v- Pentium) so the pricing is not too bad.
      Thankfully many of us see the reviews and now can read between the lines and make our own more nuanced conclusions.

    I had the original Surface Go. I used it for about 2 days before I returned it. It's just too slow. Taking notes had noticeable lag with the pen. Google has gone out of their way to make their apps so slow on Edge they're borderline unusable. Taking it out of S Mode to install Chrome or Firefox filled up the 4GB of RAM in seconds. I ended up getting a not-quite-base model Surface Pro 5 and am still happy with it. The Go 2 with the m3 processor and 8GB of RAM may be a great choice for a lot of people, but at that price you may as well get an older model Pro, you can still find them new.

I have never installed Chrome on my other PC's now since the new Edge Chromium is available and in my opinion better than Chrome on PC. The price is a bit deceiving, when you add it all up its not that affordable for what you get unless you really need a touchscreen. I'd say stay away from the higher configuration, and if you need more than that, go for something with better value.

    Interesting to see people say that this can't replace a laptop or most people have a laptop anyway. I currently have the surface pro 4 that I use for school, entertainment, and work. I actually have a laptop that I haven't touched in years since getting my surface. I will be getting the 8 gb memory 128 surface SSD go 2 today so I can have a backup. Slightly concerned about the negative view about the speed so I will be testing it out because I make calls through crm for work. The only thing that I probably should have done differently is not keep my surface pro plugged in all the time so I think that I now need a new battery...ooops I won't make that mistake again. I also bought the accessories online which included the keyboard, a Bluetooth mouse, (docking station but not the Microsoft version because of price and I didn't like the look of it), a second cover that also works as a kickstand and mat, pen, USB c to a adapter so I can use the docking station with my pro as well.. Overall, I paid $715 total for everything brand new.. I have a hate type of relationship for used or renewed electronics and I don't think it was a bad deal. Excited to have two surface devices that will keep me from buying bulky laptops especially since I'm moving out of country and I need portable and lightweight fully functional Microsoft computers to go along with my kindle.

    Hey! I have a doubt and maybe someone in the comments can help me: I'm a college student, trying to buy a tablet to carry every day to class to take notes, read pdf, make researches and in the train going home maybe see some youtube videos or Netflix shows... I'm thinking of buying the surface go 2 but I would only be able to afford the 4GB one... or maybe buying the surface go 1 used and I can afford the LTE version... or an old surface pro but I'm afraid that might be too big to carry...
    What do you think?? Thank you for reading all of this😂

    Every review of this device points out the need of getting the keyboard cover. Most likely because most reviewers needs a keyboard to write up their review and they always neglect to mention the fact that a ubiquitous bluetooth keyboard can easily connect to this device if needed. Also, no one I can find, except for a musician, actually tried Windows in S mode and he didn't think it was entirely necessary to switch over to full blown windows on a device like this. Even back when netbooks were a thing, full blown Windows 7 wasn't installed on those devices. It's most likely why they don't deep dive into Windows 10 in S mode, because these reviewers are stuck using Chrome and x86 apps for work, even though the chromium version of Edge comes preinstalled in the Go 2 and they never really looked for store related alternatives for x86 apps. This device really isn't meant for work but the Go2 can be used in S mode since most companies already lock down work laptops from installing random software for security and IT reasons. In a lot of cases, most work from home users end up remotely connecting to their office machines and their home computer is basically a thin client which the Surface Go 2 is more capable for this use. Why do these reviewers constantly critique the shortcomings of the Go series and compare it to an iPad when they're simultaneously making a comparison to a tablet OS with a miniature mobile Windows pc? It's like comparing a chromebook to an amazon kindle or fire hd.

    How come when "the tech community" reviews laptops most reviews review the highest spec or at least mid spec product. When it comes to Surface Go its always the lowest spec. I have the 8gb 128gb Surface Go 1. I got it day one back in 2018. Love it. Work and home. At work with a monitor and keyboard setup, and to then with my 55inch tv at home. Battery could be better but I've converted my life to USB-C everywheeerrrrrrreee!

    • @HenriZwols
      @HenriZwols 4 роки тому

      Reviewers typically don't buy the laptops themselves, but receive one as a curtesy from manufactures, in this case Microsoft.
      Microsoft obviously want these reviewers to have the best and smoothest experience, so will only send out highest spec Surface. So as far as reviewing goes, the base spec Surface Go does not exist.
      Microsoft could of course forgo on the base model completely, but that would mean losing the possibility of advertising with "Available from $399".

Since when you buy them it doesn't come with any attachments like the much needed keyboard. But they aren't really a tablet since they lack several apps. They don't have much storage so if you were to write documents here, which i believe is the main activity u cando here, u won't do it for long.
