This is an astounding presentation of Ballo In Maschera , sets , costumes , an all star cast , everyone in finest voice , consistently the finest singing I ever heard in an opera from every performer , not to forget the fine orchestra conducted by Abbado . This compares with the 1957 performance with Maria Callas , Giuseppe Di Stefano and Tito Gobbi . I note a superb RAI recording . Thank You ENCOREPAPAGENO for sharing !!!
It was originally recorded by ORF, the Austrian tv , for the opening of Abbado s tenure in Vienna. The production ( director,sets ) had been personally chosen by him, after Luciano accepted with great enthusiasm to open that 1986 season.
Gabrielle Lechner , singing Amelia, was a stand in, initially. She sang nevertheless egregiously , not daunted by this stellar cast.

Лехнер прекрасна, как раз такое сопрано и нужно для этой роли, красивый грудной звук, и верха красивые, и низы прекрасно озвучены. Играет тоже прекрасно. Интересно бы ещё её где- то послушать. Нежный гибкий голос. Достойная партнёрша Паваротти. А такого, как Паваротти, нет и, наверное не будет.

I think the 1986 was an especially good year for Pavarotti. Concert in Munich, Aida in Rome, and this Ballo inmaschera in Vienna all were standing ovations for Pav.
This was one of his best.
Aida was in Milan in 1986. The 7th of December 1985, Pavarotti ruled brilliantly the role of Radames, and the day later, the italian "Corriere della sera" wrote on the main page "Celeste Luciano", saying how wonderful was his performance!
