Three things you notice in this video: 1) the thud of the ball each time they kick it. Balls were very heavy and thick in material back then. Players have it good nowadays, especially when it comes to heading the ball. 2) the damp pitch with visible surface water (i.e. puddles). Sports turf technology and drainage systems have come along way. 3) Coming together at centre of pitch at end of match to swap jerseys and wave to supporters. They knew they were mostly lowly paid amateurs just out there giving their all by representing their respective countries on the world stage. Nowadays, players are mostly playing for themselves. They look over to the sidelines or big screen at every opportunity to seek a nod approval from their coach or teammates. Looking at the big screens to male sure their hair is nicely kept.
That is why I enjoy watching matches, of any sport, from years ago. There is nostalgia as well as some greater empathy and humility and interest in the players performing; they would have to get on a long flight, which they probably had to contribute some cost towards; the phone calls back home to family; the stories of how they found out they were selected for a team; knowing that after the match is over they most likely returned home to rest before going to work on Monday morning.
The ball was even heavier because the field was almost a swimming pool xdd

Also, the Australian team here weren't even full time, they were all part-time players and had separate day jobs

A military junta led by Augusto Pinochet into taking over the country in 1973, which led to (a) a qualifier for this World Cup where the USSR controversially no-showed the Chilean leg and (b) a pitch invasion opposing the junta (and many people in the audience who were chanting "Chile si, junta no").

Nómbrame un central que haya tenido mejor posicionamiento, anticipación o barridas que Figueroa. Para qué vamos a hablar de despejes, rechazo y cabezazos. Y claro que eres antichileno si te lo pasas injuriando a los jugadores chilenos sin ningún argumento. Ha sido el defensa más premiado de la historia, ganando 3 veces mejor jugador de América en los tiempos de Pelé, 6 veces nombrado el mejor central de América, 4 veces el mejor central del mundo. Considerado el mejor extranjero que ha jugado en Brasil y Uruguay, viniendo de un país que futbolísticamente a nadie le importa como Chile.

I got to watch all three Socceroos mathes at the 1974 FIFA World Cup das a 4-year old as my parents could not afford to send me to pre-school/daycare/kindergarten. Then only 5-10% of all 4-year olds went to pre-school. And after this match ended started Australia's 32-year drought and Chile's fall from grace in the sport that would last decades.

Desastroso el campo de juego.
Paso en muchos partidos de ese mundial cuando aun no existía el drenaje interno en los campos de juegos y dependian de las bombas del cuerpo de bomberos.

Chile produced some fowards of quality at this tournamant in Ahumada, Reinoso and Carlos Caszely. Add to that Garcia and Figueroa at the back and they were unlucky no to qualify for the second round. The political problems at home and demonstrations on the terraces may not have helped but Chile could 'PLAY'.

Un comentario chile tenía jugadores más altos en ese mundial 74, una observación no se si estoy equivocado, lo digo por la participación de los últimos mundiales 2010 y 2014
Quintano y Figueroa pasaban el 1,80 y tenías fortaleza buen cabezazo los laterales pasaban el 1.70 un poco más alta que en los 20 defensivamente

Chile pudo convertir 2 goles (mal cabezaso de Figueroa y Reinoso), pero Australia tambien convertir 2 goles (sin arquero, pero pifiaron). Pero parece Penal de Figueroa, otra cosa q nunca se dice es que en el 1 Tiempo no lluvio (al final la cancha parece seca, sin pozas), a y no aparece el Gol anulado a Caszely (¿offside?).

Acabo de enterarme que en este partido a Chile le anularon un gol legitimo.
Yo siempre supe que este grupo estuvo arreglado, tenian que pasar las 2 alemanias si o si, y mas encima tampoco este partido debio haberse jugado por la condiciones de la cancha, era una laguna.

The number of killed and tortured is mostly marxist propaganda - the Chilean officals will tell you now (not than). Allende simply brought communism into the South America and communism must be vanished with any possible weapons. If you don't do it that way - the result will be what people have in the Eastern Europe.
