    We recently moved to Montana. This was our first winter with goats, they were totally fine all winter without blankets even when it was -30 for a couple days. I especially appreciate that you’re in Montana! When I’m feeling anxious about my animals I watch your videos and always feel reassured. Thank you!

    Hello Delci, Love your tiny fact about the Warm Water!!! We are in North Texas and when we get a freeze, our sweet goats water will freeze. Last year we hadnt buried the water line yet and every freeze meant another burst line!. Anytime we have a freeze, I take water to them (your voice is in my head - Goats need clean Fresh water, at all times ) anyway, I started taking Hot water from in the house, by the time I get to the goats, its nicely warm, actually I have to take 2 pictures - one for each goat, or they will jostle for a drink, and soon we all, including me, will be wet. - Oho - Nice brite Pink carry-all for Bill"s Ferrier supplies, cant miss it! thank you for all the info you share, it makes a world of difference!

    thank you so much for this! Personally, I blanket my horses just because I show in the winter so it's actually healthier for them to be blanketed. If they have all that winter fluff, then get a hard workout it can cause them to get overheated very fast... plus it's a lot easier to keep them clean... 😉👌

    One more comment: our Nigerians twins have developed a super thick fluffy coat, Edge, who is a little older has a flatter coat, we aren't into deep negatives but it is very wet here which makes it feel even colder. They have a nice house that keeps wind out and a high shelf to sleep on so they don't lay in bedding that is damp from wet feet. They don't seem cold at all but rarely have to be out in the weather unless they want to be! Also, I've made mozzarella twice now and it is very good. I have made yogurt in the past and it is easier than cheese. It just has a little more carbohydrate than I aim for but may go ahead and make some for the probiotics ( I use capsules now) and to share with the grandkids who love goat milk and goat cheese. God bless you and hope Thanskgiving was wonderful for you!

      Smart little goats to stay out of the cold as much as possible! 😆
      I’d like to get some culture and make the mozzarella that takes a bit more time to make but I’ve heard it has a deeper and better taste. Which kind did you make?
      I bet your grandkids will love the yogurt!
      We had a great thanksgiving! I hope you did too!

    What are your thoughts on blanketing goats?
    And are you making goat milk yogurt yet??
    Although this is written about horses, the same is true for goats:
    thesoulofahorse.com/blog/no-more-blankets-an-amazing-article/
    And Dr. Ken Brown DVM from the Facebook group Goat Vet Corner, is an advocate of not blanketing goats as well. More information can be read in that group in the files section under Winter Care for Goats.

    If you put your inner pot from the instapot into a sink with cold water inside and kinda keep swishing the water around because it gets warm next to the pot fast. It will cool down in just a couple mins! I just put it in sterilized mason jars into the oven with towels over them and the light on overnight and it’s ready in the morning! But I’m going to try this!

    Our cold snap starts this weekend
    Eeyore, nubian mix, started growing his undercoats over a week ago. He's soooooooo soft right now 🥰!!
    Only help them with covering when it gets windy AND cold.
    And I was wondering, how does one get stubborn, borderline wild, goats to stanchions for hoof trimming and other things?! Got some ornery bucks.

      What K Barnes mentioned is a good place to start :) Sometimes, if you can get help, it just takes some forced manipulation to get them up on the stand. And once they see that there is grain or a yummy treat they can be satiated for a moment. And then hopefully, with repeated practice, they will start to get it that it's a good place with treats ☺️

    Collars: someone told me that I should use plastic breakaway collars in case the collar gets caught so they won't choke. I use the collars to grab them. If the collar breaks away, it seems like it wouldn't be helpful. Not having a collar would make trying to get them returned to their pen difficult. What is the solution ? Is there one?

    • @DelcifromALifeofHeritage
      @DelcifromALifeofHeritage  3 роки тому +1

      That is hard. I've decided my goats need them for the use of being able to guide them when I need to. But I do try to keep them loose enough that if they got caught they can slip out of them. My Olivia has a collar that I'll find on the ground every once in awhile and I wonder how she got it off. But it's comforting to know it can slip off.

    What about blanketing kids? I have 3 does due to kid in February amd am worried about them getting too cold.

    • @DelcifromALifeofHeritage
      @DelcifromALifeofHeritage  4 роки тому +2

      When my does have had kids during a snow storm and cold snap I’ve provided heat for them. But it is so so so important that’s it’s in a way that the heat lamp can’t get knocked down.
      Using a plastic barrel with a hole in the top cut out for the heat lamp to stick through is a great option to give them safe heat in the winter.
      I’ve never put a blanket on my kids but they do need to be kept warm. So use your best judgement in that situation. 😊
