I fell for FJ60s 15 years ago when I drove a friend to K&H Land Cruiser Specialists in Canoga Park to pick up his 80-series and I happened to look under a FJ60 in the parking lot and I was blown away by the size of the diff pumpkins on a 'wagon'. Richard let me drive one of his and I've been hooked ever since. I have four Land Cruisers now and three storage sheds full of parts. Thanks, Van for another wonderful video! You're a brave man to drive an overheating HJ60 that far in that weather, but it certainly is a testament to their tenacity and temperament! The no-start after you survive and arrive is classic Land Cruiser!
I have an FJ55. K& H was so great when Richard was there. Now not so much. Old Toyotas are reliable but they are still a lot of work to keep them going like any old truck. I might have to go with the new Cummins diesel.
I own a 1986 Toyota Pickup and its max speed is somewhere between too fast to stay behind a semi and too slow to pass it so I only merge left going downhill to get around a semi-real quick.
I bought my '89 fj62 from a kid in Montana and it had an Overland Cruisers sticker on it. I emailed them on an off chance they could give me some info on it and they sent back an entire history of my truck. Great respect for their work. My FJ is partly a symbol of not buying into the idea that cars are a service that you are beholden to the corporations for. It's mine free and clear. Nobody is going to turn off part of my car because I quit paying them. If it breaks, everything you need to fix it - parts, knowledge, help - is out there for you. Sure, it's work to keep it running well, but it's rewarding to me. And, damn, it's got great lines!
Casey's have more of that New York city, fast paced, 'coming right at you', 'in your face' style. Van's have a methodical, slow & steady, 'follow along with me' style. Both excellent storytellers
My daily driver for the past 18ish years has been a 1963 Mercury Comet. Through PHX rush hour traffic everyday. No air conditioning, no power steering, no seat belts, but it makes up for it all in style. I enjoy driving it and therefore avoid road rage and distracted driving.
I love everything about the old landcruiser. My family had one when I was a kid (an ‘82 I think?) and it’s always held a special place in my heart. Glad yours gets the TLC it deserves.

When I saw your title "The Romance of Owning a Vintage Truck" I 100% without a doubt knew it had to be a Landcruiser, Hilux, or 1st gen Tacoma. You sir have a unique taste for such an amazing Truck. You can't beat older toyota trucks. They are just such bomb proof trucks.
I had two Toyota Hi Lux 4X4 ‘s a1980 &1981 both are built too last solid front axles, manual locking hubs efficient 22R engine. I brought then to Maryland and the Mid Atlantic states NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA & DC prolific use of salt and other chemicals on roadways ate them alive like Cancer. Van your Landcruiser and Tacoma is part of the reason I can relate to you and what you choose to share with us. Love ya have a great weekend!
I'm on the journey of owning an older truck ('89 Mitsubishi Montero) and there's something about these older trucks. Mine sat for 18 years on a farm in Oregon and now lives on in Montana. Just got it running in the past couple months and for all the toil and headache, I love it!
I appreciate when people keep their vintage vehicles going and give them a second life, instead of letting them go to the junkyard. There's something special about SUVs made 30+ years ago. No computers. WAY easier to work on. I hope the new engine works great for you!
I’m on my second 4Runner. My first was a 1996 and I was gracefully arriving at 500,000km, when my mechanic did some work on it, took it out for a test drive and rolled it! My heart is still broken. I now have a 2002 4Runner, and it is mint (too nice actually) and I’ll likely baby this truck forever. In fact, I need an old one for winters and slugging crap around! I can’t bare to mess up the 2002 since it’s like new! It truly is a dilemma. At what point do I start really working that truck like I did my old one. Seriously, it’s like it just came off the Toyota lot. I miss my old buddy, it was well worked in and unstoppable.
My family lived in Saudi Arabia from 1988 to 1990 and the Land Cruiser was by far the most popular truck you saw in some of the harshest climate and terrain on the planet. I use to joke you could drive them off a cliff and they’d survive. I forgot how I use to dream of owning one someday. I may have to do a little shopping.
I owned an 83 FJ60 for years, all original, loved it, sold it....miss it. You don't go anywhere fast in them, but you can go anywhere you want in it and sleep in the back when you get there.

Reminds me of my monthly drive over the Cascades on Hwy 20 in WA. 82 Diesel Rabbit Pickup would crawl 35-40 in the shoulder on the way up. All 52 horses lugging up the mountain. There's a certain flow state you settle into when you're moving slow, immersed in your surroundings and hyper-aware of all your rig's mechanical idiosyncrasies.
I had one of those. Drove it all over the west coast, to Alaska and back couple times. Great little truck. Crank up the injector pump timing till it just puffs a little black smoke at full load, full throttle, open up the air box, and exhaust. That will wake that little diesel up. You still won’t win any races but it will hold 55-60 up big hills.
wow. I own an 80 series in south west Australia, I love it to bits, but much the same every time I go to turn that key my heart stops for a moment. The engine conversion sounds beautiful, all I could say is you should've swapped an 80 chassis beneath it while you are at it but no ones perfect haha! absolutely love these cars, my friends love them too, thanks for treasuring them and showing them off, all the best Van!
The slowness of the LC is the beauty of the LC. It doesn't need to be fast BECAUSE it lasts forever! When you are eternal, you can take your time and enjoy the journey!... I've got an 02 100 series that I actually wrecked yesterday. Time for a little bit of a makeover.

I find it fascinating the reaction I get when I want to watch Van’s videos. First off, I beg, pray, and sacrifice so the lord above will send us a video sooner. Then, when scrolling on my phone, usually in the bathroom, IT APPEARS! I click to watch it, but just as I get the impetus to watch a movie in the theatre instead of on a TV at home, it feels sacrilegious to watch one of Van’s films on my phone. It must be on a bigger screen in a comfortable place. If it was cheaper, i would rent a screen at my local Alamo Drafthouse and watch it there, where it should be. There is ceremony around his content that I have never experienced with another creator’s work. Thank you for all the hard work you and Braxton put into these.
When I was a kid my dad had a less vintage silver Land Cruiser probably from the 90s or early 00s. It was utilitarian, a gas guzzler, the engine was loud, the seats were so insanely uncomfortable.. it was the best car ever and never let us down.
I fully get you. Similar following (and technical issues) here with a '94 VW T4. Loud, slow but you can repair almost anything on your own and it simply won't die. oh, and too many good memories...

A few years ago I bought a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport with a manual transmission to be my daily driver. I absolutely loved that car. Watching this brings back both nostalgia...and relief that I sold it 😂
I TOTALLY GET IT. I had a 79 FJ when I was 19 and held on to it as long as I could (about 20 years). Bought my wife an 80 series for our first family hauler. I knew all their little faults and could troubleshoot most aver the phone. It was totally irrational. This time of year brings me back with the fall smells and memories of cruising in the mountains.
I imported a 1994 Defender 110 Pickup from Brazil. It has a 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo diesel (the 300tdi). It struggles and has endless quirks, but I wouldn't give it up for anything. Love it... only other vehicle I'd get besides a diesel old Defender would be a Bandeirante/LandCruiser. Well done.
I started following when I saw you make the Toyota sign for your Tacoma. I have two LCs myself, 80 and 100 series. 80 is in rough shape, but this video was inspiring. I plan on building it back up. Went to the LC museum earlier this year, what an incredible place. My family were the only ones in there at the time. Glad to see another LC video today.

I own a 200 series Land Cruiser and I love it. Not a vintage truck (yet) but I hope to drive it for as long as they have gas stations. It’s a beautiful machine.
Van - I drive a 1987 FJ60 (gas) that I purchased new 35 years ago. Almost 300,000 miles on the original engine. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it 1,000+ miles, but it is pretty gutless. Still, there is something magical about the the sound of the 2F as you shift through the gears. Look forward to the sequel!
building a school (out of pre-fab shed kits) in East Timor ten years ago, we used an ex-Australian Army Troopie to transport everything from bagged cement to re-bar to glass doors (on the roof between mattresses). The last four kilometres to 20 minutes in low range second.

I really enjoyed this video. My first car was an ‘86 GMC Jimmy…it couldn’t accelerate uphill on the freeway, gas gauge didn’t work, if you didn’t apply the right amount of pressure in the right place on the keys they’d bend trying to unlock the door. Irrational, but I loved that truck and all its peculiar traits.

Just sold my 2022 VW to rid myself of a car payment and got into a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that has 338k miles. I've been putting some WORK into it. It's tough but fun! Definitely makes you appreciate the car.
Nostalgia for 90's Land cruisers is something we share lol. I remember a girl at the private HS I went to had rich parents and they bought her one Brand new back in 95-96, it was SO dope! She ended up rolling it over one night and totaling it, so her parents bought her an equally dope BMW M3. I was SO jealous of her, she was rich and spoiled, but such a cool, down to earth, nice, person that I couldn't stay mad at her for being spoiled.. I came to terms with our inequities, embraced her richness, and she shared her riches with me. She was very generous with her parents money, lol.
I just did this drive four days ago to Idaho. Camping in the truck along the way similar to Casey. I must say that stretch from Vegas to Hurricane has never gotten old.

Clean your radiator. That will probably help with it running hot. It might be full of dead bugs and dirt. I only daily trucks from the 1980s and earlier. You got this. They were made to drive anywhere when new. They’re a little slower. There a little more raw If you keep the maintenance up, they do just fine. I put put 20,000 miles on my 86 suburban driving and camping all over the country last year. Mountains. Swamps. Thousand of miles of dirt. Coast to coast. Easy peasy. Just gave it to my dad recently and bought another one just like it.

The overheating issue is definitely caused by a faulty cooling system, they should never overheat even in extreme conditions.
They overheat when they're turbocharged and someone gets a bit excited with the fuel screw.

I imported a 1994 Defender 110 Pickup from Brazil. It has a 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo diesel (the 300tdi). It struggles and has endless quirks, but I wouldn't give it up for anything. Love it... only other vehicle I'd get besides a diesel old Defender would be a Bandeirante/LandCruiser. Well done.
I started following when I saw you make the Toyota sign for your Tacoma. I have two LCs myself, 80 and 100 series. 80 is in rough shape, but this video was inspiring. I plan on building it back up. Went to the LC museum earlier this year, what an incredible place. My family were the only ones in there at the time. Glad to see another LC video today.

Van - I drive a 1987 FJ60 (gas) that I purchased new 35 years ago. Almost 300,000 miles on the original engine. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it 1,000+ miles, but it is pretty gutless. Still, there is something magical about the the sound of the 2F as you shift through the gears. Look forward to the sequel!

building a school (out of pre-fab shed kits) in East Timor ten years ago, we used an ex-Australian Army Troopie to transport everything from bagged cement to re-bar to glass doors (on the roof between mattresses). The last four kilometres to 20 minutes in low range second.
I have a 1992 jeep yj and this video captured everything about owning an older car. The love, the headaches, and the consistant hope that if you drive carefully it won't blow up on you. Also the money. So much money 😭 I hope one day to have an fj company fj60. Will probably never have that much money but it's a dream ❤️

I really enjoyed this video. My first car was an ‘86 GMC Jimmy…it couldn’t accelerate uphill on the freeway, gas gauge didn’t work, if you didn’t apply the right amount of pressure in the right place on the keys they’d bend trying to unlock the door. Irrational, but I loved that truck and all its peculiar traits.
Good ending :) I like the shot of only your shoes showing, while you load up your stuff. The video tells a lot without even showing the new engine :D

Just sold my 2022 VW to rid myself of a car payment and got into a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that has 338k miles. I've been putting some WORK into it. It's tough but fun! Definitely makes you appreciate the car.
Nostalgia for 90's Land cruisers is something we share lol. I remember a girl at the private HS I went to had rich parents and they bought her one Brand new back in 95-96, it was SO dope! She ended up rolling it over one night and totaling it, so her parents bought her an equally dope BMW M3. I was SO jealous of her, she was rich and spoiled, but such a cool, down to earth, nice, person that I couldn't stay mad at her for being spoiled.. I came to terms with our inequities, embraced her richness, and she shared her riches with me. She was very generous with her parents money, lol.
I just did this drive four days ago to Idaho. Camping in the truck along the way similar to Casey. I must say that stretch from Vegas to Hurricane has never gotten old.

Cummins R2.8 was the best choice. The whole time I was thinking you were going with an LS, which is okay, but the Cummins is way better.
Clean your radiator. That will probably help with it running hot. It might be full of dead bugs and dirt.
