  • Welcome back, everyone. In this video we're going over the all-important self-talk, how to speak to yourself when it matters most. Plus, how to cultivate a positive mindset before you get under the bar.
    I've been in those cases where I simply can't clear my mind or didn't even know how to clear my mind, and I hope you take away a little of the research here into your own training practice.
    I hope you find this video helpful. If you would, please make sure to like and subscribe to our channel and ring the notification bell 🔔 so you won't miss any new videos. I'm trying to make this the Year of UA-cam™
    I'd love to hear your opinions, comment down below. Thanks for watching.

    I feel like I learned about a dozen new skills editing this video. Nesting sequences, color grading, pretty study overlays and highlighting text effects. On my list next is SFX and incorporating subtle audio to augment the video, tightening up my actual talking and avoiding rambling, and diversifying shots a little more. Hope the effort is showing

      It's looking really great! Appreciate the effort. I think if you do speed, then render and replace clip, you can then do the warp (or vice versa).

    Really excellent summary of self talk, as someone who often does all 4 types interchangeably and uncontrollably. I found this really helpful :)

    Good talk, totally agree. In my experience, this gets super hairy though when dealing with injuries since there’s that reminder in the back of your head, instilling doubt.

    I'm from East Asia and I can back-up negative self-talk having a positive performance impact. A lot of my best lifts have been from a self talk of "ahh f*ck it, who cares if this goes up or not" or "I'll just re-rack it if it feels heavy", surprisingly those reps all feel lighter and move faster than what warm-ups dictate

      Do you think that's cultural in some way you might have picked up growing up, or where does it come from for you?

  • @joolsgrommers1466

    I think a great example of negative talk not always being detrimental is Kyra Kondie (olympic climber and all round badass (massive spinal fusion didn't stop her from qualifying!). She has a tattoo saying: "You suck, try harder!" And has nothing but positive things to say about the effect of this.

    • @brycebyte
      @brycebyte  2 роки тому +1

      Absolutely. If it motivates her to work harder, that's what matters. Depends if you interpret "you suck" as criticism or as fuel to work harder

    I remember Dr. Mike Isreatal once say in one of his videos, to go to a dark place, then he during an exercise said some stuff in russian which i dont understand, but that stuck and has become my mantra before big lifts

    • @brycebyte
      @brycebyte  2 роки тому +1

      That's definitely an effective strategy for some. I find I can only do that rarely. Also it opens up a broader question of why we might need a dark place to lift effectively

      Any time I'm able to do that, I completely crush the set, and kick at myself for not loading more. But it's extremely hard to reach that state when fatigued.

      @@brycebyte i think of it like this, unsure if itll make sense to others. The fight or flight response of the body to anything can be conditioned by self talk, so i think i can put myself into fight mode mentally.
