Rather questionable nitpicking by the critic. Senior Uhtred's use of the term 'Viking' was technically correct, since he accurately called them "Danes", and that "they come as Vikings" (i.e. as raiders) when responding to the question of whether or not they came to trade. If one wants to criticize what he said, one could also criticize the fact that he was speaking modern English, rather than Old English, which most of us would barely be able to understand; so not very practical. Additionally, reference hygiene, there's no reason to believe medieval English Kings or Lords were much cleaner than their subjects. Even later in the 1700s, European aristocrats used to cover up their bad hygiene and smells with copious use of perfumes, as they would rarely bathe. So what's the likelihood that medieval big-wigs in Europe's "dark ages" were somehow more hygienic? In those days, they were leaders because they could fight and lead their men in battle, not because they were dainty and dressed in the latest finery and fashion. They likely resembled their subjects, but with somewhat more expensive armor or clothing. As for battle tactics, even if the critic (from the benefit of hindsight) thinks that a direct frontal assault on a Dane shield wall is a bad idea, does that necessarily mean the Saxons never attempted this "mistake"? Not sure that could necessarily be called 'inauthentic". And as for no missiles (i.e. arrows or spears, etc.) being fired from the Danish shield wall, there's no reason to believe this would have helped Ragnar's plan of luring the Saxons into a shield wall trap, and might have detracted from it. The rest of the criticism of leather armor, inaccurate sword hilts, etc, seems to be reasonable enough.

I've thought long about why the saxon king and his royal house look so poor and under-maintained. We see in the battle that almost the entire army is armed with swords. Swords are more expensive to make as opposed to *Spears*; *Spears* require less metal and time to make. Some idiot must've decided that it was a good idea to equip the entire army with swords as opposed to *Spears*, thus bankrupting the kingdom. So not only did it cost them a lot of money, but it also cost them the battle. Remember kids: *Spears* are the weapon of choice for equipping a large army.
In reality, spears (of various types) were the standard weapon, swords were rare and only for the upper class due to expense. A shield wall would almost entirely spearmen, some using throwing axes as well, with a few leaders wielding swords and having more armor than a helmet.

"They come as vikings" is actually accurate isnt it? A viking is the Danish word for raider or invader, and if they can regognise them as danes, is it such a stretch that they have learned that word?
Yes, the phrase was accurate. "Are they traders?" "No, they come as vikings." How did he know? They had the beast heads on display on the prows of their longships.
Well, "viking" isnt used any further in the series so it was probably to clear things up for the audience, giving this was like the very first minute haha
@hetrodoxly yes, viking is something you do, that doesn't make his use of it incorrect. Substitute the word "viking" for "raid". He said they come as Vikings...which literally translates to "they come as pirate raiders"...as a way to point out the danger. They weren't friendly ships, and that language was spoken in the time of Vikings
@robert mugabe In the book it's established those same ships came without dragonheads and were Danish traders, the alderman says the equivalent of 'they are here to raid not trade'. If you want to go down the path of Anglo-saxons wouldn't use that word, why aren't they speaking in old English?

Sure decorations one the prow were popular but those were worn either all round the year or when at war for example even William the Conqueror had a decorated prow for his ship (likely a longship style of design, Normans after all still kept swathes of their material culture)

As a farmer, with an interest in history in general and the history of farming in particular, it is always nice to hear that someone else can detect these *monumental* errors. It always baffles me why moviemakers don't do proper research before making supposedly historically accurate films. Will we ever see a believeable, realistic and accurate (action) movie about medieval or earlier periods?
+MrAstrojensen When it comes to landscapes, no you won't see realistic and accurate movies about medieval or earlier periods. At least not if you want live action movies. The cost and, more importantly, time involved in making a set that looks like the cultivated landscape around a medieval town is very prohibitive.
Trabber Shir True. The landscape is VERY different. However, they could still do a far better job with the houses, costumes, etc. I mean, why does everything have to be covered in mud? Why do the houses have to look completely foreign, impractical to live in and totally unrealistic? Why burning torches in daylight? Why does a film like this have to look completely stupid, when it could visually be so much better with just about the same amount of work? It wouldn't be perfect, but at least it would show effort to appear as realistic as possible.

The things that really irritated me were the back scabbards and the huge amount of fur. I mean Uhtred looked like Geralt from witcher which broke the immersion a bit
It doesn't help that accurately recreating the weapons and clothing of the time period would've looked way more badass than the fur/leather crap they went with.
granted Uhtred's Later Outfits in season 3 and 4 and his more Danish Style Hair cut makes him look alot better. the clearly went for more Jon Snow style Outfits in later seasons and the sword on the back for Uhtred works because he tends to always go into battle with his sword drawn long before it starts. none of the fantasy troupes of drawing sword from back when surronded by like a thousand enemies he tends to just carry his sword on the back just when travelling.
Derfel Cadarn yeah, a lot of the book was pretty historically sound. They called them Danes, they wore arm rings, they used spears and archers. Granted it wasn't all accurate, but it was better than the show.
The show is absolutely horrible. Especially the casting. It takes great talent to miscast EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER. That senile, grumpy, dark haired misery of a man? Yeah, that's Ragnar, the long-haired, loud and cheerful Dane. The one with the golden hair down to his butt. That cheerful little joker of a blonde? Yeah, that's Ubba, the dark, menacing warlord who seemed to have o sense of humour at all. Brilliant work, people, just brilliant. My favorite serie of books, stopped watching after about half an episode.
(4:53) In the book, the Danes were actually in Eoferwic (York) recently taken by their efforts. When the Northumbrians arrive and charge in, (There was a hole in the wall) they form the "Boar Snout" formation. It was like a triangular shape designed to break through shield walls. In this adaptation, the Saxons completely ignore this and charge at a testudo-like formation. How did the screenwriters decide to ignore this? Could've taught the audience with relevant facts that would've helped tremendously!

@@BattleCookie404 You are dumb, please shut up. The term 'Viking' refers to a journey or expedition, usually completed via piracy and raiding. Saying "they come as Vikings" means that the Danes, who also come to trade, are here to pillage and raid.
I know this video is older so it's probably been pointed out already, but the "king" in the beginning of the show is actually Aelderman Uhtred, and when he dies, the main character takes over his title
So you reverse noob box him. Should have brought the Saxon Hearth Troops from Barbarian Invasion, insane when in shield wall. Interestingly they have rectangular shields. Probably because the Saxons were employed and given equipment by the Romans before they conquered England.
Braden Vande Plasse I mean they didn't even try to outflank them, if you can make that happen then their formations will crumble if done correctly. And how did they not see those guys hiding there? you should have a couple scouts to spot ambushes and traps. Indeed the Romans had many vassals in those regions, its very possible that they just stuck to their weaponry and duplicated it for their own.
We're talking about a video game and common sense. I doesn't take a military genius to analyze a battle in a TV show. It doesn't take a military genius to command an army, just look at all the completely shitty and unqualified generals in history, particularly Roman ones.
Everything else, since it's all man-made, could have been re-created, though I'm curious on the "modern chickens" comment at 2:50... How easy would it be to get their hands on... I guess they'd be called heritage chickens, yeah? It's not like a sword or a piece of armor, or a spear, you can't exactly "make" a chicken, needs to be breed, so unless they can find an extant line of period-appropriate animals, it's kind of extremely difficult to be historically accurate in that one regard.
+Hypothetical Axolotl There are still breeds of old chickens available. I don't see this as a terrible error, but it was something to remark upon. Budget limitations will eventually show.
Ah. I figured they DID exist, just some absurd cost/difficulty, like if it were 10 thousand dollars an egg, sold by a single dude living in Argentina, or something obscure like that. :P
@SchoolTerrorist and yet still used today. Cheap and Old school, maybe ? Cheap and Easier to do ? Cheap and out of fashion people of the conteryard of the countryside ?
I picked up on most of these myself when I watched. I was quite surprised none of the loot-hungry Danes nicked the dead king's mail coif after they strung his corpse up, I mean it obviously wasn't of great quality given how he died, but it'd still be worth a bit, you'd think
Cornwell described back scabbards in his books. And if I remember correctly, he also described a warrior as wearing a studded leather jerkin. I like Cornwells writing, but he isn't above using cliches.
He always had them using spears though. And that one scene with the elder Uhtred just walking through the Danish shield wall always bothered me. Overall I think the series is amazing though.
He was a TV producer and writer before he started with the books. He knows that costs for props and locations are an obstacle for historical accuracy. As so the public expectation for battle rushs and dramatic confrontation. Probably most of the vestiment, swords and childs are recicle from other productions, including Vikings,
He describes a couple of historical inaccuracies as well. Danes didn't use cavalry in this period, but in the Pale Horseman they are described as riding down the country while pillaging. He also gets resistance of chainmail a bit wrong. I also had the impression that Æthelwold was but a child at the time the Danes invade Wessex and not a grown up like in the books
Sharpknifesedge I actually dont mind the backscabard in this time period since, unlike the medieval ages, here the swords were much shorter in comparison.
Uthred is stupid as fuck. Granted in later seasons he grows up a bit, but he still thinks he can get anything he wants by being a rude asshole to a king. It's just annoying how incredibly stupid Uthred is and how much succes he has despite of it. If Uthred disobeys the king and literally plunders neighbouring peaceful kingdom dressed as Danes, and after that hr saves the king's life, there is no problem. If Odda, a trusted and senior elderman, raises his fyrd and marches on the enemy on his own initiative, which turns out very well and the king's daughter is saved as well as the economy and future of Wessex, which is basically the same situation, he needs to die because of treason.
I'm only a minute in and I've had quite a good number of laughs. I really lost it at "time to change the torches again!" Keep doing God's work Lindybeige! *Edit* "That leaf is wrong." Damn it I can't breathe.
he clearly says, "they COME as vikings" which is correct. they are danes but they arrived as VIKINGS with the intention of fighting. uthred the elder also, ISNT a King, clearly stated he is only a LORD :)
So if the Danes formed a Shieldwall, why didn't the Northumbrians do the same? Did the script not call for it in order to make the 'double shieldwall ambush' a massive shock? And where were the king's retainers/guardsmen during all this? He barges on through and somehow outruns his chosen men who are sworn to protect him?
+Christopher EH (GymnasticMango) I'll also point out that was the most useless shieldwall in all of film. Why it has to be three layers thick baffles me.
I was at a design meeting for a theatrical production. And the director was going through requests, and when talking to the props master he goes "he needs a medieval like sword with a sheath on his back." I blurt out "they rarely to never wore swords on their back! By the way.... Sorry im a bit of a history nut" BACK SCABBARD.

+Ben Kirkby That's what it's in the book, indeed. The narrator says something like "When they came to trade we called them Danes. When they came to raid we called them Vikings."
+Prolet Kult - I was going to correct you (gasp- someone is wrong on the internet!) but then I realized you're completely correct. I'm not sure whether to find it ironic or not, that while the Danes did not succeed in their attempt at that time, as Harold's troops managed to fight them off, the people who did succeed were themselves proud descendants of Scandinavians (even so identified by name - Norman = Norse man).
***** - I am taking the word of a documentary that I saw. They supposedly did maintain a degree of identification with their Norse ancestors (though of course probably in what we would call a "romanticized" way), because they liked the idea of their toughness and courage. I admit, this could be bogus.
@Earl Martin He acknowledges that he's being a pedant in the title of the video. Also the leaf bit is so obviously a joke that you either have very real trouble with social cues or you're being intentionally obtuse.
@Earl Martin The point of videos like this isn't necessarily to say "they got it wrong, they should do everything accurate", but to highlight where it differed from reality in an entertaining way. I'd imagine many of the people who make such videos realise there are limitations in budget and practicality.
That battle was hilarious. Cornwall spends how much of the book describing ad nauseum how the Anglo-Saxons and Danes both fought in classic Germanic shield walls and how our protagonist is a master of this tactic, yet the Saxons somehow forget how they have fought wars for the last several hundred years or more? Joy eternal.

"No, they come as vikings."
What's wrong with this? He's clearly using "viking" as a job title like "raider" or "bandit."
They would not have used that word rather said something like ''Raiders''
Why would you use a foreign word instead of "raider" ? If they had been chinese would you have said, "Ermagehd they don't come as traders but as Túxí zhě !!!!"
@@CatroiOz viking has become a regular word in modern English. If you're going down that route you would have to criticize the Saxons not speaking old English and the Danes not speaking old norse. @@CatroiOz The issue is that people still say "Autobahn" and not "German motorway", so.
Why didn't they use the term the Saxons used?
"They come as vikings" is actually accurate isnt it? A viking is the Danish word for raider or invader, and if they can regognise them as danes, is it such a stretch that they have learned that word?
Yes, the phrase was accurate. "Are they traders?" "No, they come as vikings." How did he know? They had the beast heads on display on the prows of their longships.
Will Herondale yup
Well, "viking" isnt used any further in the series so it was probably to clear things up for the audience, giving this was like the very first minute haha
Dante Alighieri viking i think is a verb as in "to go viking". but also as a noun go describe someone who does the viking.
@hetrodoxly yes, viking is something you do, that doesn't make his use of it incorrect. Substitute the word "viking" for "raid". You can go on a raid (viking), but you can also go to a place AS a raider. The guy asks him "are they traders?" and he responds, "no, they come as vikings" as in "they come as raiders/plunderers".

As a farmer, with an interest in history in general and the history of farming in particular, it is always nice to hear that someone else can detect these *monumental* errors.

We're talking about a video game and common sense. I doesn't take a military genius to analyze a battle in a TV show. It doesn't take a military genius to command an army, just look at all the completely shitty and unqualified generals in history, particularly Roman ones.
The sword our hero wielded was in fact made of Tin, or something like that, as they said in the book.

+Ben Kirkby Oh, and if you think the thatch in this is bad, have you seen ITV's Beowulf?
+Ben Kirkby I got a few too, but I missed that leaf. The shame.
What gets me most is that Bernard Cornwall is actually all about the historical accuracy, he can't have been best pleased

Still love the series :3 I read most of the books since 2010 and it was really nice to see them come to life like this. Enjoyed!
Actually, if you read the books, you'll notice that he did actually have that tunic washed, nine years after the start of the events.
The only reason Lindy didn't complain about crap archery was because there was no archery in the entire episode in the first place.
Wuff.
What an enchanting cover of the intro music, Lindy. I would love to know the name of the, clearly very talented, vocalist. ;)
+zach416 I just strangled my cat and recorded the sound.
Lindybeige I see. Fine work.
2:49 "modern chickens" yeah hold up lemme go find some medieval chickens brb
@Earl Martin do you really believe the "this leaf is wrong" comment was not a joke
@Earl Martin Yeah I'm sure he was prodding at himself when he pointed out the chickens
It seems there are many people here who just don't understand irony, or Lindy for that matter. Twitter is calling you back 😂
@Earl Martin He acknowledges that he's being a pedant in the title of the video.
"He should have known studded leather wasn't going to do anything." ROFL
You noticed the leaf, too.
I need more like this. Your sarcasm is unmatched.
for the love of god do this with the new itv Beowulf
+Tummy Wubs I couldn't watch more than 30 minutes if the first episode. Don't put Lindy through that hell!
æ oh my god it was hideous....
+Tummy Wubs
Th...they're not calling it historically accurate though surely?
+Fossil98 well its based on an epic tale with giants and stuff so I dont think they could get away with historically acurate
+Tummy Wubs What are you talking about, strong Arabic and black warrior women in medieval Europe are historically accurate.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the wild dancing/fight moves at 9:29. That guy closest the camera is really getting into it. I think he's drunk and thinks it's a fire dance.
"That leaf is wrong". I genuinely spat my coffee out at that.
7:14 ''Rutger Hauer hadn't been born yet in this period'' killed me x)
