- Dwarflab have kindly sent me a sample of their DWARF 2 / II Smart Telescope for review - not as a paid promotion; I don't do those. It's my first foray into smart telescopes. In this video I setup the scope, walk through the associated smartphone app and try out a few images of day and nightime objects.
Note that an updated version of the app and firmware has just dropped - I will assess the differences soon. - Наука та технологія
Thank you Graham for an informative and thought provoking presentation. Now, all I have to do is persuade my wife to become enthused about the Dwarf 2 😂
Does not need to be level, so can eq mount it and works fine. The Lazy Geek was thd first to try. As I am in the Southern Hemisphere have no polestar, so don't get get bit perfect but but far less field rotation. As it does a 3 point calibration and plate solves knows where it is and unlike other smart scopes it does nor need any leveling, hence can eq mount it.
The new app is out and addresses the issues and auto focus now works well, and 10X better. You can EQ mount it ad works well
Thanks Dennis, I’m now trying out the new app.
I have a good tripod I can tilt, so makes it easy to EQ mount
@@dennisrogers6786 Is there a setting to tell the unit it’s mounted equatorially, so does it sense it?
No setting to tell it its in eq mode but the beauty gets away with it, due to not needing to be level as it still works out were it is
I think the niche application for this scope is comets and novas, there must be a way of programming it to scan a fixed area of sky
Cool
I have the opportunity to pick one of these up for a reasonable price from someone upgrading to a more professional setup. I already have some of the gear for a more professional setup, but don't have a lot of time. I'm looking for something to have some quick fun with, and to easily take on camping trips, or on vacation. I like the idea of using it for quick and easy electronically enhanced visual astronomy as much as I like it for astrophotography. I'm hoping it will be good for sitting around in the evening with friends and family and introducing them to some astronomical objects. This, and a a couple pair of good binoculars.
I think it would work well for that. I’m reviewing the improved software and will post an update when the clouds eventually clear.
Continue your channel
Can you say more about the object catalogue? Can you create a user catalogue?
Hello David, I have just downloaded an updated version of the app - video part 2 needed! It has a much larger set of targets, categorised as galaxy, nebula etc . The option to enter a manual RA and Dec remains, I need to investigate if it will store these coordinates as a user object after a power cycle.
Unfortunately you reviewed the Dwarf II with the older app and firmware.
Yep, behind the curve. I’ve had the kit for 6 weeks during which the weather has been awful, so I put the video together over Christmas with what I had, just as the new software dropped. I’ll try the new software when the clouds clear.
Update the app and firmware, it’s much better.
Will do, I got the notification of the new version today whilst finishing the video. Glad they’ve improved it.
Better off with a star adventurer and small scope.
The ZWO S50 SEESTAR is far superior to the Dwarf in every way. I'll be sticking with my apo and EQ mount.
I haven’t tried the SEESTAR so I’m interested to hear your view on it. I think both it and the Dwarf are looking to create a new route into AP with simpler kit. Aperture wins overall of course, but getting an image in a few minutes does have appeal.
@@JenhamsAstroThe Seestar is more complex and produces far superior images. It has a multitude of functions that the dwarf lacks. It's also got ZWO behind it which ensures frequent updates and support. FLO had 72 of them arrive last week and they sold out in a matter of hours.
Just not as portable. And Dwarf has improved quite a lot since the new update.
Sadly im afraid you are mistaken, the zwo has too small a field of view- half of the dsos are too large to fit on the sensor
And the new software for dwarf is miles ahead now
