HESH is such a cool thing in concept. It’s one of my favorites rounds. But War Thunder doesn’t care about your feelings (or facts)
To be fair HESH is not supose to explose in the tank it only create spalling but yeah spalling are a bit underwellming as they don't bounce inside in WT
datamine shows only 165mm and 183mm retain their HE blast code. all other HESH got theirs removed
Hey Odd, just trying to rally up some peeps here and wanted to ask if you might consider putting the word out there for people to join the WT forums and get active in the moderated suggestions.. as we all know this absolutely perfect game has some "flaws".. with the right amount of voices we maybe could get some change.. improving gameplay, especially things like Air RB game modes like EC for Air RB or better maps and game modes for ground forces. I doubt this would reach phly so maybe you are interested in supporting this, as a long time player I am kinda sad about how the game is just new vehicles but instead of a sandbox we play in an uncleaned for years cat litter box~

That said hesh seems to have allowed the undesirble nations to over preform. We track tged up at a 35% win rate that is 5% higher then they are allote5d. The game engineers are instructed to rebalance that game to russia 75% win rate Germany 65% winrate uk 30% winr rate. Asonmake sure rhe usa does not brech rhe 30% Mark.
German mains and newest nations are always OP. While "old minor" nations like UK and Japan are unplayable. Gaijin is Blizzard WoW power creep if military games. To scam old players.

HESH spalling is very complex but you can approximate it pretty easily: squashed HESH is larger than its original caliber, this is area' (prime), and area' can move a certain thickness of armor, more at the center, less as you get towards the edges of the squashed shell. Therefore, for very thin armor (say 20mm) where the most of the area' can move that thickness, the shell will penetrate and cause overpressure. As armor goes up, less of the area' of the shell can move the armor. For lightly armored targets (say 50mm), only the very center of the area' will be above the thickness and move the armor. This will still penetrate and cause overpressure. For medium armored targets (say 100mm), none of the area' will be above the thickness threshold, so it won't penetrate and won't trigger overpressure. However, it will still cause spalling proportional to the strength of area' at a given point divided by the thickness of the armor (and times some "spalling factor" based on the shell's efficiency, armor quality/type, and anti-spall measures in the tank), so the tank will probably still be absolutely wrecked. As armor gets thicker (say 150mm), that amount of spall will get smaller up to the point at which it becomes negligible (e.g., 250mm). The area' behavior can also be reduced to a single function of armor thickness, so no fancy math. I'll do a /warthunder post at some point.
Depends on how the code models impacts. Who knows if they’re only approximating it and it’s not actually a physics engine calculation. You gotta remember modeling such things over low tick and high latency between 30-40 people and with arbitrary handling of which info is server side and client sided can get real messy. Just have 20 people call arty on one section of the map to slow or even crash the server, can show you that modeling explosions can be data intensive, especially between clients, much less the server.

HESH should be modeled like HE for light armor and HESH for heavy armor ... it should just over pressure tanks that don't have thick enough armor to prevent a 4kg explosion from killing it, but for thicker targets it should act like it does currently for HESH.
Granted most over pressure ignores spaced armor or composite armor on some light tanks, which also needs fixed. But if it is HESH it doesn't go through, which is what HE should be like as well for composite armor on light tanks.
they could just have the pen algorithm check if a HE shell with the same explosive mass would have penned and plug that result in.
yeah it makes no sense if a big hesh doesnt one shot a light tank but you must remember that hesh relies on the armour existing.
they probably did this for 'balance purposes'
HESH already has overpressure, its just that compared to HE with the same TNT equivalent armor thinness threshold is lower.
Edit: as an example, on 4:20-4:30 Phly kills Leo with overpressure, but for this shot to work you have to hit very low on the mantlet, else it does literally 0 damage, and hitting turret sides "just" kills turret crew, while with 4kg TNT HE you can hit pretty much anywhere on mantlet lower half or side turret to overpressure.

@@hartsymk1 105mm HESH is the best balanced because you can reload fast and compensate if you miss or get Crit. Conway and Conqueror reload times just make it unfun. AVRE and BESH barn just overpower the enemy with one shot

@@hartsymk1 I dunno. I feel HESH is fine for me on medium tanks and mbt especially taking dudes hiding behind corners trying to bait you to shoot first. I love to pack 5 HESH. Roof top and above driver's hatch is my favorite weak spots

A HESH round is not a penetrator, but a concussive round. The "SH" part of it's name, is "Squash Head". The round is designed to crush the plastic explosive against the target and spread out, like when you smoosh play-doh with your hand. In the milliseconds it takes to do this, the detonator is already going off, igniting the dinner plate size HE to create a concussive blast. This blast, through energy transfer, spalls, or breaks off, a dinner plate sized bit of armor on the INSIDE of the vehicle. The bit is already white hot, and traveling around 20,000fps inside the turret.
Here's a couple of problems with it: German tanks, are covered with a concrete "spackle" to defeat magnetic mines. This layer will absorb and diffuse enough energy of the HESH blast, it will fail to fully concuss the armor, creating little to no spalling inside. This is also why it won't track a vehicle reliably, because the explosion is not directed, much of it will break away and not be detonated, thus unable to cut the track. Hitting at enough of an angle, will spread out the HE, like a smear, and reducing the blast effect considerably, and also fail to produce enough damage.
You must hit the largest, flattest area of a heavy armored vehicle for the HESH to work properly. Lightly armored vehicle will just get blasted.

Yep until the IS6 came out and all the newbs who bought the tank were dying to hesh. They started to complain that hesh was too OP and then it got nerfed ever since. I remembered one shotting all those IS6 newbs with Hesh from the Vickers and then shortly after it got nerfed.
You don't play brits for HESH. You play them for stablized APDS madness.

HESH doesn't "go through".
The theory is, the head squashes flat against the armor, then when the HE filler detonates, the concussive force should cause the inside of the armor to spawl off and send fragments of it's own armor into the tank.

Remember that HESH depends on not hitting any spaced armor, attachments (tracks, wheels, etc). Those Tiger2 turret hits were BS as they should have popped like a balloon.
Every time I go to use hesh and know its shit at 120mm or 105mm I just think to myself, "what if" and then alt f4 the game after the first game and the next day I repeat the process.

BMPs are near impossible to kill with hesh from the side, the track can completely negate the FV4005's round
If you know how HESH works, it's no surprise. BMP-1 track cover counts as spaced armour. With HESH you want to hit one solid steel plate so the shockwave can travel through and cause spalling.
Hitting attachments does not transfer energy to the inside of the tank.

I like using hesh on the Chieftains as well sometimes, to hit the top of Soviet and Leopards. Usually ends in an overpressure

HESH, just like 3OF26, is pure gold in some situations that would otherwise be impossible _if_ you understand how to use it. Which most people don't, so it constantly gets a bad rep.
Shoot at cupolas, turret roofs, cheeks whatever. The Centurion AVRE is a prime candidate for it, and centurions in general can very easily be oneshot with a 90mm HESH by shooting at the cupola.
But if you hit _anything_ that isn't armor it'll poof and do nothing.
I actually went on to mostly use HESH in my 90mm LT's like the C13 T90, AUBL/74 and Ru 251.

I still vividly remember playing my first game in the FV4005, and I shot a T-55 in his side from about 25 metres away, and it did nothing. He even said later in chat that is scared the shit out of him.
damn phly really be playin the brits a fair bit this month, i reccomend the hampden tb mk1 at 1.7 with 4 1000lb bombs and 2 500s, or the Achilles which is just plain op at 3.3
The only OP part of the Achilles is the gun everything else is mediocre.
@@crazyadam9281 trust me i know, that 190mm pen is very satisfying against a kv1, and the Achilles can still hold its own decently well in a full uptier. i usually take both the normal and premium achilles along with a sarc, cromwell and a firefly with 1000s, its a very profitable lineup

Tracks and wheels is a shot sponge. I would be surprised if the tracks hit boxes have been worked on at all since tanks came into the game.
The squash shell aspect of hesh means that the shell isn’t designed to go through the armor but to “squash” on the outside then send pieces of the tanks own armor. So you have make sure the shell hits closer to where the crew actually is.

Bro, HESH doesn't work against spaced armour. The spalling from hitting the outer part of the track-cover does not penetrate the side-armour of the tank itself.
It's no surprise you can't damage a BMP-1s side by shooting spaced metal plates.
I mean the protection analysis tells you what's so broken. A flimsy bit of metal that is the mudguard that runs along the BMP running gear was enough to cause the HESH to detonate. The reality is that it would give way to the HESH which would then form a pat or at least a ball of some description in the running gear against the side and would detonate. The BMP is a cool vehicle for sure, the original OG, if you will, but what it's not is robust when it comes to armoured protection. It couldn't be in order for it to be amphibious. Look at what Challenger 1 and 2 did to BMPs and MTLBs in Iraq with HESH. It turned them inside out.

HESH is just HE with a soft cap on it that deforms so the explosion of the HE creates more spalling, any kind of spaced armor kinda mitigates this effect. Also most Tanks have spall lining to prevent those bits of metal from killing the crew.
I think that's part of the problem. HESH is not a penetrating round and people expect it to work like one. Hit a skirt or a track and most of the damage stops right there. Engines and transmissions will eat a lot of the damage because it's mostly just spall damage. You'll see far less overpressure damage if the round doesn't actually penetrate.
It a lot more technical than this, but that's the gist of it. There are a lot of variables involved when it comes to how effective a HESH hit is.
Modern tanks? yes, though the lining is overstated. But HESH has a proven record of wiping out soft skins, light armor and MBTs alike. Anything with a good ERA package or spaced armor. But Ive had it fail effect on MBTs, R3s and god damn russian milk trucks...

I saw some documents that stated that the 120mm HESH spalling only had a velocity of around 70m/s and a fragment mass of a few grams so shooting at a King Tiger wouldn't really kill much of the crew, though it would cause injuries. I'm not sure about the credibility of the documents and I can't seem to find them anymore so I can't check
I think it is because, since HESH is (somewhat) like HEAT, it's penetration dose not decrease over range but by armor thickness and angle of impact, if the tiger 2 P's upper front plate is (for say) 253mm and the HESH can pen 222mm(for say), then it will do nothing more than make a hot dent, but still knoking out who ever is behind that steel plate cause, you know, overpressure. How I interpret HESH is that it makes angled armor flat thus making armor useless, for example: the tiger 2 P's upper front plate is 185mm thick but angled at whatever degree it is which bumps up the thickness to 200(something), if your HESH can pen 222mm, it will ignore the 200(something)mm's and only target the original thickness of the plate which is 185mm's and send a ricochet of righteous steel everywhere, the BMP that survived the first shot would have been mangled but the skirt "saved" it(like as if)

There is a concept called space armour... So if you shoot the side of a let's say a russian tank and it hits a bit low to the tracks, it will act like spaced armour. So your HESH rounds won't do anything except take the tracks off or something.

I find it works much better against angled armour then shooting flat. Can be the same piece of armour, but hitting it angled seems to do more. If I am not just crazy, that is how HESH works IRL, performing much better against angled armour so the round can cover more area before detonating, causing more spalling of the inner armour of the vehicle.
They even have a HESH (105mm) vs Sloped Armor simulation.
well.. at 18:02.. the plate is at angle. HESH kicks the armor in direction in which armor is angled. The shrapnel shouldn't go to turret. On light tanks, yep, there's overpressure.
Btw i think the MGs valosity is the same as the HESH Round it is on most of British Tanks like that so you can make accurate shots

HESH makes the round perpendicular to the angle of the armor. So if you hit front with a 60° angle or whatever, it'll go down 90° from that hit.point
