I heard a story from a Christian comedian. Someone told her to “stop taking antidepressants. God would save her.” She replied “stop wearing your glasses. God will save you.” Everyone cheered.
We still get sh*t from EVERYONE, even family when we pulled our son out of 6th grade bc of intense bullying that his school did nothing about... Plus he was dealing with undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD , losing everything I'm a house fire including our fur baby .... It was soooo bad he couldn't sleep unless I said I'd think about keeping him home, puking every morning.... So we pulled him out, got in cyber school, started counseling and medication.... BEST DECISION we ever made.... 5 years later, he is soooo much happier, still sees his counselor and we found medications that work.... His mental well being, health and happiness means more to me than anything!!! I will not lose my child bc of others opinions and stigmas!!!!!
Why is it that bullies always get away with it?! Well done, you. I had to homeschool my middle child because she was so unhappy at school. She wasn't much happier at home, but we made it through.
I have struggled with major depressive disorder for over 15 years. I have lost so much respect for several, now formerly close, family members and friends. It is incredibly discouraging and behind painful. My 85 year old mother, has understood and advocated for people with mental illness since the early 1970s and was the primary person who convinced me to seek professional help when back when I was floundering just to survive. Humans can really suck sometimes….don’t be that person.
Absolutely spot on!! As someone who lives with someone with clinical depression. All the love and cuddles does not help the man regulate his mood/emotions. Not the healthy diet, or exercise, or CB therapy. Its hard for people who don't suffer from depression to understand this. Medication is a game changer for cognitive stability, mood, sleep cycles, anxiety, etc. There is no shame in meditation. We tried every herbal remedy under the sun!
Yes. I've been tired of the ignorance for years. Being called weak, lazy, stupid. Like, the brain is the only organ that doesn't get to be treated like an organ. A heart can have a defect or a disease, and this is treated with care and compassion. When it's the brain, it's considered a moral failing. Even, in some cases, by the professionals who are trained to treat it! It's so idiotic. Thank you for speaking out against mental health stigma.
My daughter has ADHD & autistic ... she has focus issues in school & said the medication have helped her .... she's a straight student & honors math & English... so yes sometimes medications are need to assist
Speaking from personal experience, I agree totally. A few years ago I experienced a traumatic event that left me shattered. Twenty four hours a day for almost a year I was on fire with the worst anxiety imaginable. The physical pain associated with it was unbearable and I begged my doctor to give me something to tone it down. Sleep, eating, doing anything was impossible. I had reached the edge of total exhaustion and was ready to blow my brains out when a sympathetic and understanding psychiatrist prescribed something that turned the volume from a hideous 10 to a manageable 5. Today, I'm alive.
Tired of the ignorance: I have severe ADHD, but when I was a kid it didn’t have a name we were just “bad kids” or stupid. When I was in second grade they brought my parents in for a parent teacher conference, because my teacher and he principle had decided to send me to the school for the “special kids”, because I wasn’t working up t grade level. My folks asked them what up to grade level in reading for a second grader was, they told him and he laughed, I was reading Time, NewsWeek, and National Geographic, he knew I was reading them, because I had asked him for definitions and pronunciations of big words, until he had shown me how to use the dictionary and encyclopedia. They then said I wasn’t up to grade level in math. The folks asked what grade level was, and Dad laughed at them because I was balancing the family check book for fun, knew my times tables through 13s, and was sucking up the algebra he was trying to explain to my older brother in 8th grade faster then he was. They agreed I would be given me some form of a standardized exam then meet again. The next week the fifth graders were taking an exam to allow the school district to project what classes and teachers they would need in two years when the fifth graders got to junior high school. I got the second highest score they had ever seen in the district, and was at the high school or college level in everything. After that I got all the work for the day when class started, and when I finished I went to the Library and could study whatever I wanted to. When you have an IQ in the 99.99 percentile, nearly everyone you meet in life is abysmally ignorant.
I'm so glad you said this. For some people, it's really necessary and makes a big difference. Take the meds if you need them. Times have changed, demands are different, and we don't have a lot of the societal norms that hold us together.
As a parent who has been there with a child, actually a young adult with a severe brain disorder, I appreciate your viewpoint and acknowledge your experience. Meds for behavior health all have unwanted side effects and are not to be trifled with but are sometimes necessary to manage a severe mental illness. Compassion and understanding are also essential, but aren’t always enough. A good psychiatrist is hard to find but they do exist and you must find a good one. Don’t give up the search or the effort to find help.
Wow. People will just sit at their computers and say things - all the things - with their whole chests and never once stop to think of who they might be hurting.
Problem is, my generation grew up with parents who had very old fashioned views of mental health and saw it as being committed to a mental hospital. They also have this "get over it" attitude. That seems to be a problem even today, people just say "get over it" and regard people with mental health issues as "weak".
Most of the people who are dismissive of my MH issues are “health nuts” born in the 80s and 90s who believe I can exercise and take vitamins to cure MDD 🤔.
