Tell your sister that we thank her for her service. ❤
Having worked for a cruise line for over 22 years, a lot of ports fail to recognize the contribution to the local economy that cruise ships provide. The port fees were supposed to pay for the infrastructure used by the ships. A lot of people call cruise ship passengers "ice cream tourists" because they don't buy anything off of the ship.
But
how about harbor pilots, tug service, refueling, provisions, taxis, mooring crews, garbage and recycling fees, etc. During covid, ports were crying for us to comeback. Be careful for what you wish for.
I agree. And the cruise companies were begging us to buy gift certificates to help keep them afloat and their reward to their loyal customer base was to raise prices and nickel and dime us at every turn. I poured thousands into gift cards only to find myself now almost priced out of cruising. That's some thanks. 3 cruises left and we're done with this 💩show.
@@aarpranch9082That's a completely separate issue. The nickle and diming tends to be cruise line specific. The topic i am referring to relates to the hidden economic contributions to the port by the cruise lines.
Cruise ships are like aircraft, they are very mobile assets. I remember when one port in Alaska said we are going to charge every ship an additional $50,000 per visit. We said fine, we will stop at another port. That ended that discussion very quickly.
Happy Birthday, Kelly! 🎉🎈🎁🎂Thank you for your service
Happy Birthday Kelly! Thank you for your service!!!
Good morning Doug. I don't mind paying a little more but that's too much. I need to try MSC soon. Don't think we'll ever go on Virgin. 19 mill...that's a whole lot of bacon needing to be cooked😂😂
Happy Birthday Kelly!!!! Sad about Iceland.... But I would still want to go..
Good morning Doug! Word for the year will be “price hike”. All hikes already announced and this is only January. Thanks for reporting the latest news. Have a great day! Happy Birthday Kelly and thanks for your service.

Have a terrific Tuesday!! 🛳️🛳️
I hope they go back on that port fee hike in Iceland.... I have a cruise booked to go there next year for 4 ports... these places need to stop trying to run cruise lines out of everywhere.
A very Happy Birthday to Captain Kelly!!!! Thank you, Kelly!
Happy birthday Kelly! Happy Tuesday Doug.
Happy Birthday Kelly and thank you fir your service!
Happy Birthday, Kelly and thanks for your service. Good report, Doug.
Happy birthday,Kelly!!
Have great day😊
Good morning Doug thanks for the updates 👍 Happy birthday Kelly 🎂
Hmm...Using round numbers for simple math.....$15 x 4 ports = $60 the x 2000 pax per ship = $120,000 per ship, then x 80 ships - $9.6 million in revenue they hoped to get. I am unable to calculate how much they will lose now that those 80 ships are not stopping at those 4 ports. I am sure the impact to the local businesses will be greater.
@@edbloom4897 That is valid. Only would increase it to about 3500 pax per ship as these are not little ships going there. still that would be $16.9 million. However seeing so many cruise ports (and airports) have various taxes I think the Cruise lines decision to remove Iceland ultimately will cause them problems as they will run out of ports to go. seems Cruising is going in 2 directions. A ) People who want to be on floating resorts that do not even need to go into a port, except to comply to certain rules like the US has around foreign ships, as the ship is the destination. B) People who want to sample the world’s cultures by going to as many different ports as possible. A) Probably more profitable and attract younger families. B) More dependent on mature adult customer base, which tend to be older. B) Is now pushed into the luxury smaller Cruiselines at higher cost. Pity as I fell that is what Cruising is about.
Cruise ships make too many stops in Iceland to begin with.
Our NCL Cruise made five stops!. And all about the same look and feel.
My uncle was a graduate of the Air Force Academy and went on to work at the Johnson Space Center. Happy birthday, Kelly!
Morning Doug
Ty for your updates. Have a wonderful Tuesday 😊
Happy birthday kelly 😊
Happy birthday to your sister and huge shout out for her service!!!
Saw this coming, you let Mexico get away with jacking up their port fees/taxes,....now every port location out there is going to do the same thing.
Personally I think the lines need to be reminded of the Covid shut downs.
Happy Birthday Kelly..hope you enjoyed your day…Thx Doug🚢🙂
Happy Birthday Kelly
Happy birthday Kelly! Thank you for your service 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Happy Birthday Kelly 🇺🇸🛩️
Thanks for the update Doug! Happy birthday to Kelly! 🎂 Wow! MSC will be home porting more ships at Port Canaveral. I wonder if they are looking to build their own cruise ship terminal there like they did in Miami? Disappointing to hear what the politicians are doing that will drive away cruise ship business to Iceland.
Happy Tues Doug! 🌞 Hope you have a great day and your sister, Kelly has a beautiful birthday. 🌹

HAPPY birthday Kelly and good luck in your career.
And many of those 19M cruisers will also get on Facebook and complain about the price of eggs.
I think that the tax challenge and passenger limits that is now to be seen at many places like Iceland, Mexico, Greece, Alaska and many more is “self inflicted” by the Cruise lines. Instead of looking at pushing the growing number of customers on more ships to more destinations they are doing the opposite. Larger Mega ships that can only go to limited places and as such way more congestion. This is a bubble that soon, maybe in 3-5 years, will burst. Then you will have Megaships doing Bahamas and Private Islands and limited ports in Alaska and Europe, while the rest might be used at other locations. I do however think that the reaction of people stating they will boycott these destinations is also a bit excessive as while they complain about $18 for a port tax, like for Iceland, they seems not too bothered about the excessive drink package prices of around 60-120US$ a day that the Cruiselines charges, which has been increased many times as well.
Good point they complain about $18 but god forbid they need the alcohol to get drunk and don’t mind paying extra for that.
@robbroere1384 There are only so many slots for ships at each port. A cruise line can't just send as many cruise ships as they want. These slots are allocated among the cruise lines. As well, certain cruises are more popular. Ships are allocated based upon where the demand is. There are still lots of smaller ships. But yes for the major cruise lines the ships have gotten larger for 2 major reasons. Economies of scale, the passenger crew ratio can be higher on bigger ships, you have the same navigation staff on a larger ships, same harbor pilot, tug service, mooring crew etc. On bigger ships there is more to do. People want to be entertained. There are more families, more teenagers. I worked on the Pacific Princess and ship capacity was about 670 guests. That ship was my favorite but it was not appealing to families or young adults. The demographics have changed.
.
@@burningblue1254Fully agree and understand the logistical challenges about port slots etc. I think that your second point about changing demographics and associated profitability is what drives Cruise lines. Although I have not done any study but I feel that in 2025 the number of Cruise ports that are regularly visited is less than it was in 2019. However if you look at total ship capacity that is way bigger due to the fact smaller ships have been withdrawn and Megaships have been added. That with the fact that Megaships can only go to a limited number of ports is the issue as those becomes overcrowded. Cruising in the past was about getting a feel of cultures across the globe and the ship was a comfortable way to get you there. Cruising in the future is all about the ship (read floating resorts), and how Cruise lines can empty your Credit Cards and the destinations become less relevant. If the US rule for foreign flagged ship having to visit a foreign port did not exist I believe you will see many more cruises to nowhere.
Happy birthday to Kelly!
Hapoy Birthday, Kelly.
We are supposed to stop in Iceland at 3 ports. Hopefully they change their fees.
I see no issue with port fees. If i really wanna visit a port... i should accept it
Morning Doug,
I think that’s fine to cancel ports, due to tax hikes. I love Mexico , but since Mexico is doing the same, find another ports to visit. Thanks Doug.
Happy Birthday Kelly. Thank you for your service and our protection.
no, public demands will overwhelm the taxes.
Iceland is a rich country, it'll hardly dent their income. Also the United States like to put taxes on visitors too, the airport transit tax is labelled as one of the biggest rip offs by tourists flying through.
New subscriber, I’ll check out all your content!
Thank you for your subscription. I appreciate it.
Cancelled port of calls in Iceland due to the tax, now do Mexico. One over another means the $$ wasn't really there for stopping in Iceland. We went last summer. It was a beautiful place to visit but never worth going back.
Thank her for her service 🇺🇸
And there is our answer to why cruises are so expensive or getting so expensive. It is what it is.
Thanks
You’re welcome.
Happy birthday to your sister from an Air Force Mom
Will the port fee in Iceland give them more income than the money that cruisers spend there? Is this an environmental move? How much will they lose now if there are no ships?
Side note you’re getting so close to 100k subs 🎉
Yes we are getting close.
Why doesn’t Carnival send more cruise ships to Jacksonville? I mean other than the Elation?
Wow! I so glad I cruised to greenland& iceland jul>aug2024. Happy birthday Kelly. Doug how is your 1st mate 🐈 cat?
She’s doing good, thanks for asking Marilynn.
I guess it's good I did Iceland when I did.
The tax hikes are going hurt the ports. Passengers will feel the effect in their cruise fares too.
Oh, I really hope this doesn't become a permanent thing where most ships don't visit Iceland. I've just got my head around how to actually get to that part of the world - I'd be so gutted if they all stopped and pulled out!
I’m sure they are so sad to see everyone go.. lol.
I’m booked to Iceland on Majestic Princess in 2026
Funny the cruise /fee hike industry is canceling a port for doing the exact samecthing they do. I'm just about done with cruising its just getting to darn expensive.
Kelly is … ummm…very sporty looking. ❤

Here's one for you. Currently on the NCL Jade. If you place a washcloth under the running faucet in your stateroom it starts turning brown in a few minutes. Not sure what's in the water, but I wouldn't drink it. Concern cruiser.
