    I've got size 12 feet and the penny is my main board. I absolutely love it and it revitalized my interest in skateboarding! The board is weird, because it needs a different riding style. I pretty much have my front foot facing forward with my toes just past the bolts and my backfoot somewhat sideways with a part of the heel along the tail. The boards are fun because they have a different center of balance, as both feet are equally balanced on the nose and tail. I like gettting over giant gaps and cracks either by lifting up the tail and hopping my weight off the board so that the board rolls right over, or pushing on the ground and guiding my skateboard with the front foot. I usually do that down curbs, but riding off of them is fun also. The foot toward the nose can tip the board out from under me when I hit a rock. I kind of just roll forward and run off. Sometimes that doesn't work and I slam. It took a few adjustments for the tightness of the trucks, but I can cruise down hills without speedwobbles. If the front truck is looser than the back it will be a very unstable ride. My favorite part about the skateboard is its durability! Even though it scrapes, the board feel of the penny has never changed in the three years I've had it! The flexibility and pop of the board have been the same, even as I ride it through the rain. The board will never waterlog. I love the thinness of the trucks, because it allows me to ride on narrow places, such as curbs and the smooth paint of the traffic lines when the road is rough. It's fun to ride on wonky surfaces because the street becomes a playground everytime I step on the board! Good video! Hope you keep skating! Peace

    If you guys don’t like the penny.. go for the nickel board (it’s the same thing but just a little bigger). I’ve been riding my nickel board for 4 years now and it’s not that bad tbh. Going downhill can be a little dangerous because of the speed and “wobbliness”

    • @nathanxbond
      @nathanxbond 3 роки тому +1

      There are three ways to easily avoid eating it on a downhill penny jam. One, slow down. Drag the toe of your foot to slow yourself to desired speed. Two, carve side to side. This will also slow you down. 3, tighten your trucks. If you're going really fast you'll still be able to carve but you won't get the wobbles. At least not as easily.

But this little thing is nifty depending on how you look at it. My favorite part is that it's small. I can walk into buildings and stuff without hauling around a bigger board. I agreed. I think Ogden Sikel is only looking at it from a traditional skateboarder's pros and cons. You can't hate-on something that is not designed for your likes and dislikes. Pennies are for cruising and commuting and having fun and some people like my wife don't like the traditional skateboard because she's not interested in learning tricks. Also, the wheels on the Penny handle the roads and our neighborhood trials way smoother, unlike my skateboard which are way too hard for my neighborhood.

    1- hey Ogden! I've had a non original, relatively good quality penny during like 6 years and put abec9 bearings from a longboard and some 7.5 mm inline rollerskate wheels. it improved A LOT on any surface. It rolls more time and rolls better in any surface. The only con is that it vibrates more and it's like an inch taller. I did not need any riser even with my weight(165 pounds). The stability is not very different because pennys aren't the most stable board. Maybe you can try this for a video! it would be so cool!
    2- I have an opportunity to buy a penny nickel(27") for about 65 dollars. I've seen your beautiful landyachtz turbo flight and I love it! but i can´t afford it. Should I modify the nickel with bigger wheels, risers and better bearings to get a similar board? or just save money and buy a landyachtz? i only like to relax cruising, and transporting. Not doing any trick. (the streets here are poorly maintained and they are full of cracks, little pebbles, rough terrain and gaps on the sidewalks, so using the standard 59mm wheels is IMPOSSIBLE.

    I put grip tape on the deck which helps you tremendously with balance and keeping you planted. The more you ride the more you appreciate its compactness and portability. I love my Penny Board. BTW, I had both Penny and Nickel, and I actually prefer the Penny as the challenge it poses in you is almost daring that it is actually cute in a way. And that nice clicking sound the wheels make when it goes over narrow gaps on the surface. Oh and I changed out my bearings with Bones Reds -- it is very smooth.

    Not very durable plastic? I was skating next to the road and somehow it slipped out from underneath my feet and went onto the road. 🙄 So the thing got ran over, the front truck went flying and the back one was bent, BUT the deck remained unscathed. I mean...all true (except for durability), but for $20 secondhand I'm not gonna turn down the fun of a Pennyboard. Great when riding beside your kids, and light when faffing around and not doing tricks or a full longboard cruise. Also not sure what you're comparing the wheels to (Plow Kings or Caguama?!) but they're plenty solid for "cracks and bumps" in the sidewalk. They're basically 60mm Chubby Hawgs which eat up most pavement.

I definitely recommend getting actually grip tape for it tho and i just got bones rough rider wheels for it and those are amazing. Short wheelbase boards stop dead on every crack, tiny pebble or twig.
    Some places have smooth concrete and little to no debris. Maybe you won't end up bloody on the concrete with a Penny board. But where I live currently, you'll get bruised and bloody a lot. That's no fun.
    Barefoot skating is a terrible idea, especially if you're a surfer. Surfing and foot injuries are not a good combo.

I like how it's just fast and mobile and alot of them are stylish and can hold alot of weight. You can't do as many tricks as a regular skateboard but when you discover a new trick its quite satisfying con I poorly lost a few of them or had some get ran over when I was trying to ride a penny with flip flops on my phone

    I’ve had my Red nickel board since 2014. Out the box, i flipped the top washers on the trucks, and it was the smoothest ride i’d ever experienced for carving. it’s also the board that i learned to pump on. in a way, i was learning to skate on it if you think about it the tight turning radius. also the flex on the board helped with pumping too

  • @salzigkid
    @salzigkid 2 роки тому +2

    I learned how to ride on a penny board, and it has translated well to every other board I’ve tried. Portable, quick, and quiet. Replace the original bearings with some reds. The plastic itself can be slippery, but I’ve never had too many problems. If you want to trick, it’s possible, but I just use mine for chill cruising and an actual skateboard for tricks. And the board handles cracks just fine assuming you have any measurable speed?
    Obviously the board depends on your needs, but don’t let this video turn you off if you’re a beginner. I’ve found used original penny boards for $20 online as well.

    As someone with size 12 men's shoe size, I never considered a Penny board, hah. Nothing under 8.25-8.5 inches wide for me. But we get a lot of moist weather in spring and autumn so maybe in the future I'll look at their 32" or 36" board for a deck that's not gonna be hurt when it gets a bit wet. Since we've had summer droughts for years now, that's gonna be pointless for months yet. As for a cruiser, I just got a Dinghy Blunt Fender deck in the mail and set it up with some locally made components (since local skate shops don't have the 2021 selection yet I had to get the deck from overseas).

      Honestly, the international shipping costs really require consideration. Most Dinghies hereabouts are like 190 Euros because the stores gotta make their import costs back. That's what, 220 USD at current rates? More, of course, for the Turbo variant because it has that fiber glass layer. Yeah a Dinghy is good but is it *that* good? At that point I can start buying decks that are locally handcrafted, at least then I'm putting money into the local scene instead of sinking most of that money into shipping and brand name costs.
      I eventually talked myself into getting the Blunt Fender because at least those pressed wheel flares are like .. added value I guess. I really like feeling them under my feet. Don't find those on just any cruiser that size. I ordered the deck directly from Landyachtz. Can't import completes or the value of the package triggers additional import tariffs.
      Going Deck only and buying the rest from skate shops closer to home lets me keep the cost roughly on par with buying a complete Dinghy locally. Of course knowing my luck the 2021 line-up including the Blunt Fender will just show up in EU stores next month and I'll curse my impatience.

    • @OgdenSikel

    • @Psykmoe
      @Psykmoe 3 роки тому

      @@OgdenSikel Yeah, Timber are based in the Netherlands. Another one I've been impressed by is Hackbrett (southern Germany). Their offering is pretty varied (from Mini cruisers to freeride/downhill boards and a giant pintail) and they use a mix of Canadian maple and discarded pieces from local logging and wood-using industries which would otherwise just be thrown out. I got a very nice 30.9x8.8 cruiser deck made from maple and ash wood. And their smaller cruiser completes are priced similarly to Dinghies and they use polar bear trucks for them. Also, I like the understated look of wood with the name branded in. Low production numbers in each run though, since they're a small company. Still, nice way to support the local lads without having to start north of 300 Euro.

    Man some of the things your mentioning are just not true. Penny's will handle cracks and rocks better that any skateboard out there. They are extremely agile and very easy to turn. If you weren't on camera riding one, I'd assume that you'd never even been on one. And durability??? These things are indestructible. Especially compared to a wood deck.
    Edit: Every single con you mentioned is 100% incorrect. Like literally the opposite of what you said. I ride a penny to and from work every day and it's perfect. It would be a struggle with my normal deck.

Sounds like that would be perfect for someone that's never skated before like yourself.

    • @AdrianQuark
      @AdrianQuark 2 роки тому

      @@nathanxbond It sounds like you're comparing the Penny to a standard popsicle skateboard, not a mini cruiser. Objectively, a mini cruiser like the Dinghy which has larger and softer wheels and a wider and longer wheelbase will handle rough terrain better and roll faster, and a longboard will be smoother still. It's objectively true that narrow loose trucks are harder to balance on and control assuming the same turning radius as wider trucks. You might enjoy a Penny board but that doesn't make it the best for everyone, and Ogden is only stating facts.

Doesn’t look like the guy really can hence his problems riding a penny. My advice is buy a penny, swap out the wheels for some softer slightly bigger 78a 65mm.
