I just watched this last night with Quentin Tarantino at the Hollywood theater in Portland, it was so great watching him laugh and react with the crowd. Great movie, amazing
It's a very good script. The psychology of the characters is true to life. All the actors are excellent. It masterfully expresses the fallout of the disaster that was the Vietnam War. Profoundly sad. William Devane is superb.
I just watch this movie because of the Quentin Tarantino's Cinema Speculation chapter, when he writes about it with so much passion that I had to check it out. Boy oh boy he was right, what a great film! William Devane was great but Tommy Lee Jones was even more awesome, despite his short screen time. The smile Eli is talking about is a really outstanding moment of his performance, it says everything about his character!
I always loved this movie and when was 25 yrs, I was very proud to be a part of it in the sense of being an extra because I myself got to meet the actors and we’re at most of the filming locations. It was very exciting to watch the actual fighting going on in the bar scene in which that take was done several times to get it right. You will notice in the final take of that scene, there’s a huge hole or indention in the drywall. That was from the very first take, and I was surprised they didn’t take it out. Bad guy, Luke Askew (who got hooked between the legs by Devane) was pretty much stayed in character, even though he was a very nice actor and was very cordial and learned that he had passed away along with Linda Haynes, and the actor who played “Cliff” DPS officer which was sad to learn. God speed to those folks for the memories I will forever cherish.
"Paul Schrader did not make the film...It was directed by John Flynn. Also, while Schrader wrote the original screenplay there's very little of his draft made it into subsequent released version since by the time the film was made, production company employed a different writer" Sourced from Rolling Thunder DVD/Blu ray commentary.
The outfit is the other great flick by John Flynn despite the messed up end by studio chief.. Rolling thunder was rewrite by a certain Heywood Gould who also worked on an another underrated one,Fort apache the bronx, one of the best "inside police movie" i've ever seen with the french L.627 and some Sidney Lumet of course.
Incorrect. The reason why Eli Roth said that is because he was probably thinking of the original script by Paul Schrader, in that version-there is much MUCH more gruesome in the original script but the studios wanted to change it-side note/the original ending would have been way more epic but that’s a story for another day
Correct. When he said that, I thought maybe I had seen a censored version of the movie, but nope, there was never any rape of the wife. In addition to what Coltin said, Roth also might be confusing parts of Death Wish with Rolling Thunder.
; Eli Roth doesn't comprehend the motion-picture, nor the 'trailer', he's reviewing. Did Eli Roth actually see the motion-picture for the 'trailer' he's reviewing?
This was one of those Movies where they Probably Wanted Clint Eastwood for the Lead. They would have Settled for Charles Bronson. They finally got William Devane.
@@chriswebster1099 Correct Chris Webster. Major Rane was captive 7 years as a POW in Vietnam. A silver dollar a day spent in captivity. So 365 X 7 = $2555, plus one for good luck = $2556.
Thanks for ruining half the movie Eli. I wanted to watch this based on Quentin’s recommendation but you gave away most of the plot and story if I hadn’t stopped this clip.
Saw it upon release with my now deceased brother, for years after we would say "I'll get my gear". Classic line and great movie.
nice story. thanks for sharing. i am so very sorry for your great loss.
Me too, yes.
let go clean em up
I did as well. Actually saw it in San Antonio, which was the filming location. One of my favorites.
Sorry you lost your brother.
Same here Mike. Brother gone. We both liked the movie too
Rolling Thunder truly is one of the great "back from Nam" movies. William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones were both awesome in this one.
I just watched this last night with Quentin Tarantino at the Hollywood theater in Portland, it was so great watching him laugh and react with the crowd. Great movie, amazing
When William Devane says " you learn to love the rope" is one of the most subtlety creepy scenes I have ever witnessed. Very unusual film.
The internal controls the external. Perception is everything.
I saw this film when it first came out I'm still serving with the military and it is my favourite film and reminds me of me

I'm surprised he didn't mention Franklin from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre plays a small role as Tommy Lee Jones' brother in this movie.

Really stupid and brainless opinion

This movie was awesome. It had a lot of depth, was really well shot and the acting was excellent. Its an underated masterpiece.

This is just a pure perfect flick all the way. Every part is firing on all cylinders.
"Let's go clean them up", my favorite part...

That must be the reason for this film be so good.
viclis. they had Heywood Gould rewrite it but according to Trantino Willam Devane had full control.

The voice that says rolling thunder at the end: Percy Rodriguez, the greatest trailer narrator ever.
The wife wasn’t raped🤦♂️
Right??? Eli Roth is mixing his own fantasies in with what actually happens in the movie. 😂 Can't stand him.
@@SelfRighteousNewAgeLightWorker dude sucks ass. The only decent thing he did was inglorious basterds.... And he didn't write any of it.

Such a great and gritty movie!
An Analysis of 'Rolling Thunder' Lots of you may enjoy this...
For it to work the bad guys have to be really fun and scary and menacing. We have to dig it when they get theirs.
Schrader says it was completely rewritten
It seems crazy that I met James Best (Rosco P Coltrain) from dukes of hazard
My favourite film.

Roth is a poseur
Tommy Lee Jones still has hair
Right??? Eli Roth isn't the brightest bulb in the pack. 😂

My favourite back from 'nam movie is First Blood. I haven't seen Rolling Thunder, but I'll be sure to check it out.
The wife isn't raped in this movie though
Rosco, from The Dukes Of Hazard???
Yep, actor James Best.
James was huge in TV Westerns in the 50s and 60s
"Oooh, I'm in hot pursuit!"
Also the Star of the Killer Shrews.
This sounds like the 70s john wick

holly shit I have to see this movie
Some veterans didn't like it: when the studio arranged a preview for them, they ended up attacking the studio people hosting the event!

This sounds like the WORST Christmas movie ever!
Christmas has nothing to do with it.
Well, the bad guys get a special xmas gift in lead for their evil deeds.
Or is it the BEST Christmas movie ever?
