UN scientists say it's 'now or never' to limit global warming - BBC News

- UN scientists have unveiled a plan that they believe can limit the root causes of dangerous climate change.
A key UN body said in a report that there must be "rapid, deep and immediate" cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.
Global emissions of CO2 would need to peak within three years to stave off the worst impacts.
Even then, the world would also need technology to suck CO2 from the skies by mid-century.

When the reporter proudly says, "10% of world energy is through clean energy!", what he didn't tell you, is it was 10% in 1999 - 23 years ago!
Well he is wrong . From the website of the International Energy Agency:
"Renewable energy use increased 3% in 2020 as demand for all other fuels declined. The primary driver was an almost 7% growth in electricity generation from renewable sources. Long-term contracts, priority access to the grid, and continuous installation of new plants underpinned renewables growth despite lower electricity demand, supply chain challenges, and construction delays in many parts of the world. Accordingly, the share of renewables in global electricity generation jumped to 29% in 2020, up from 27% in 2019. Bioenergy use in industry grew 3%, but was largely offset by a decline in biofuels as lower oil demand also reduced the use of blended biofuels."

We cant even get our governments to put a minimum working life on consumer hard goods and some how we are going to reach the fairy-tail of net zero by 2050 LOL? china just stated they are planning to reach peak coal consumption by 2030 in the latest climate summit and they count for 25% of global emissions.

Although the price of RE tech is becoming cheaper, the price of end-user electricity becomes higher because of the needs of backup systems as there are less thermal plants available to provide for the dips. If RE is truly cheaper, the private sector would be queuing up for it. But the price of generation is not equal to the price of energy delivered when demanded. Testla once invented a free energy power source. But they said there's no money on it.
Europe and Germany in particular have been to slow to transition to wind and solar energy,
Wind and solar energy do not need to be imported and can be produced locally in any country.
Europe needs to provide incentives for homes and businesses to install electric heat pumps and get rid of old polluting gas and oil boilers. The move to electric vehicles will also be sped up. There is no good reason to help fund Putin's war by buying oil, gas and coal from Russia.

Yeah we were taught about this in uni today
The UK is actually one of the best countries in the world when it comes to emissions , and even we’re not good enough
Some countries are even getting worse
Luckily with the Russian oil ban people are looking into alternate energy methods, like the previously ignored Geothermal energy, only problem with that is that our country has a ridiculously small limit on fracking (induced earthquakes) we have to cancel operations that cause a 0.5 magnitude earthquake or more, keep in mind you can only feel it at 1 and every number has 10x the energy, some countries like Sweden allow almost magnitude 5 earthquakes, over 1000x worse
Luckily we do have methods of carbon removal, one of the most interesting is Sulphur in jet fuel, low altitude sulphur is horrendous it causes things like acid rain so we take it out of jet fuel emissions, but at high altitude it removes CO2 from the upper atmosphere, reversing climate change, if we can make a system that changes wether sulphur is removed from emissions at dependent on altitude it’s a very feasible solution as we just put that on all planes. Another interesting idea is making artificial clouds with boats, the reduced sunlight locally cools, not fixing the CO2 problem but reversing its affects, it’s easy to do and effective, and if something goes wrong you can simply turn off the cloud producers, and as they’re on boats they can be moved around to focus on specific areas
There are lots of solutions, some reverse the affects by reducing solar output on the planet, some remove CO2 through chemical reactions
Another interesting thing is what we’re trying to accomplish is essentially climate engineering, our climate is leaving a major ice age, so we still have our ice poles, this is incredibly rare, through history of billions of years this has only occured a handful of times, the danger is loops, the world is balanced by feedback loops, negative ones are when a change occurs the world reacts and causes an opposite change, these are fine, but positive feedback sucks, if a change occurs the world changes to increase that change, and temperature works like that unfortunately, the major features are ice based and it’s why most history lacks ice, 2 things, 1. Ice reflects more sun than ocean water, as you melt away ice more ocean is produced, more ocean absorbs more solar energy, so things get even hotter, which melts more ice. 2. Ice locks away methane, a greenhouse gas far worse than carbon dioxide, 30x worse, as ice melts it releases it furthering global warming, worsening global warming, melting more ice.
The gist of what we have to do is this, short term we need to reduce the effects of global warming by methods like reducing solar output, long term we need to find alternate energy sources like geothermal, and we need to start removing CO2 from the atmosphere from whatever method we choose
But the key is we need to act now as we should have acted decades ago, we’re getting in our homework the night before it’s due with this, there needs to be a worldwide effort with no false promises and partial participation if we hope to save this planet, the sea level rise alone would destroy most coastal cities, islands like the UK might be royally screwed

We need to stop buying stuff. If you're reading this you probably live in a wealthy country with a consumerist economy. You need to stop buying anything but the essentials. Cars, appliances, gadgets, furniture, fashion, toys, treats, whatever -- only when you actually need it to get by. Learn to live with what you have and stop reaching for the next shiny object. Find fulfillment outside of consumer goods. When everyone stops buying "stuff", the market will have to stop producing "stuff", the global economy will slow down, and we can more easily reach an aggressive climate goal.
But that's not going to happen, so whatever. We fought the cold war in defense of "stuff", it's not like we're just going to give it up, now.
What about investing more in electromagnetic and wave turbine technology?

Saying that THIS time will be different, is like saying that an abusive boyfriend will stop being abusive, because he said so…
The worst thing we can do is to give up, and refuse to act. If the boyfriend is abusive, why not reject him? There is a plenty of things you can do about climate change.

Call it a catastrophic crisis which it is, & by all means don’t look up!
Do it for china. They need you to shut down your tiny economies. So they can produce even more.
Why is oil profitable? Because the comsumption of it increases. Why is it increasing? Because the sales of 4x4 SUVs are increasing, the number of flights is increasing, Amazon's sales are increasing, the sales of processed food are are increasing, etc.
Pollution comes from overconsumption, we all must make some efforts to change our lifestyle.
@@PG-3462 You posted this same comment on multiple comments dude the only people that should be taking most of the blame are rich people that have the means to over consume. @@chazl9531 I'm posting the same comment because it applies almost everywhere. Yes, Jeff Besos' impact on the environment is greater than yours. However, 100 million people having your lifestyle is much worse than every billionnaires combined.
Another thing you must understand is that billionnaires are a result of overconsumption. There are for example over 150 million Amazon Prime members in the USA alone. No wonder why Besos is billionnaire 🤦♂️ The problem we have, is that everyone think just like you: "my own consumption doesn't matter on this planet, so I'll keep the same lifestyle I have as if nothing happened". "If it's now or never then it's never".
Stop. Stop looking for excuses to stop trying. Hold on to hope and spread the message and don't give up hope. To say it's never is to say you're looking for a reason to stop trying.
Oh, I don't think those of us who are trying will stop trying.
I certainly don't think there's any significant chance of the whole world getting together to do anything significant now (too many people don't want to, too many governments don't know how to).
However, that does not stop me from planting trees, reducing waste, growing some of my own food, reducing transport needs, and all the rest of it.
I feel that as long as I 'try' to reduce my family's impact (actually trying to negate it altogether with all the tree planting), I'm at least attempting to help 'slow' the impact of climate change. Slowing it down as much as we can is about the best we can do right now.
For my part, I've decided I'm going to be more honest to those people around me who I consider live their lives in a wasteful, resource-hungry fashion.
It's going to lose me a few friends, of course, but I really don't care any more. I think people have grown too used to hearing endless news reports and can disassociate themselves from these reports as if they all belong to a different reality, one which won't affect them. However, if they hear my disapproval straight from me - maybe it'll be more real, hit them a little harder, maybe even cause them to change their mind.

My one complaint about this narrative is that they’re speaking as if we aren’t already suffering from the effects of climate change. There are more frequent floods, increasingly large storms, longer and worse heat waves and cold fronts, rising sea levels etc.
People are dying left and right, towns and villages, even some cities, are being destroyed and in some cases left inhospitable.
The narrative shouldn’t be “climate change will be a problem” we should be saying “climate change is already a big problem and we need to do something or it will get even worse”
Non of that is true. There is no evidence for "extreme weather", ordinary weather is simply being reported as extreme.
@@old_toucs6283 with all due respect there are plenty of examples of weather variations becoming worse over the past few decades. Egypt for example has been seeing snow and hail in the winter during the past 5 years, which is causing people to die since they're not prepared for such weather. Meanwhile in France the asphalt on the roads was melting as it was not made to withstand the higher summer temperatures. Over in Florida their yearly cyclones are getting worse every year and have been for the past few years. Global sea levels have risen over 90 mm (3.5 inches) from their 1993 levels. Record breaking floods have been occurring across Europe.
And these are just the examples off the top of my head.
