Have you tried using a comb with wider teeth? Using a comb with the teeth so close together put a lot of stress on the hair and will lead to breakage. Use any hair products on damp hair. I don't think you needed to cut so much off. More of a trim then keep your hair feeling moist rather than dry. It won't take long to grow back.
