Great to have you on board here Cody! I am a small engine mechanic who does what you're doing. Helping others to help them selves. (By small engine mechanic, I mean Briggs, Kohler, Tecumseh, Stihl, Echo, Homelite etc.) So, keep up the awesome content. Many find it very helpful in their own endeavors to have guys like you and I out there to provide them reference and a virtual hands on approach to their problems. Cheers Cody!! Zip~
Man, you're the reason I love the internet and youtube! I've been struggling with my Shadow 600, learning on the fly! The bike had very little maintenance, so as one problem emerges, I find out what is causing it, which has led to another problem revealing itself, when I adjust or replace the original thang. RIGHT NOW, I've been fighting a fuel problem, where it seems like it's running out of gas, with half a tank left. I recently took a few things apart, removing the tank to figure out a whole lotta things that are hidden. Turns out the fuel filter and fuel line were so old, I had to borrow the breather tube that goes to the air box, to put it back together. I had installed a few bolts and clamps that weren't there before, but the breather tube had never been connected to the housing, so figured no biggie. I use the bike for primary transpo, so rain, cold a couple spills, all have taken its toll. It started getting worse gas mileage, causing me to run out of gas sooner. I rarely run it to empty, and was really put out when I drove maybe 45 miles and it started acting like it was running out of gas as I arrived at my job. Deceleration it wanted to die, but when I'd give it more throttle, it bogged hard. I've had that happen right as I was about to run out of gas. Feathered the throttle, filled the tank, issue resolved. I knew I wasn't running out of gas, but thought the fuel filter was finally clogging, or sumpin. I went straight to a gas station, 1 gallon brought it up almost full. The bike ran better, until I arrived home...45 miles away. It was also freezing cold, so I didn't know if that might be it. I replaced the fuel filter a couple days later, (DErn tank was nearly full, so I waited) and put the breather hose back to its rightful place. Man, the bike ran so much better, without having to choke it for a long time, even the throttle response was noticeably improved. That was short lived, as I have spent the past few days using the choke to get moving, while playing with the throttle to keep from killing the engine. When I took the air cleaner box off, it liked it much better, and I didn't have the same issue as with it on. Or, at least not as much. I decided it might be spark plugs, which it definitely needed spark plugs, but that accelerator pump thing kept coming to mind. Thinking maybe it's not pulling the gas with the air cleaner box all buttoned up and clogged, or maybe I positioned the fuel line wrong.... Sheesh! I still haven't taken the carbs apart, as I've been effing with trying to get a little brush out of a cylinder, that I was using to clean the threads of a spark plug hole with. I don't wanna take the head off, I don't wanna!!! Anyway, the couple vids I've watched so far have helped clear up a whole lotta wondering what the! All the muck and guck has finally clogged up the jets of the carb, eh? A bike is supposed to be fun! I love fixen things, and learning, but I've been stranded for a couple days now, and I know this bike needs a whole lot more tlc than just cleaning the carbs. ugh! Thanks for all ya do. I'll keep watchin! Tim
I just realized you are from VA. I grew up in Richmond. Anyways just wanted to say thanks for all these videos. Youve legit helped me tear down and fix every bike ive had over the years. Currently rebuilding a 2000 Ducati Monster 750. Yoy have given me the confidence to tear down just about anything. Still a little leary about valves but ill get there. Seriously your videos have probably saved me thousands of dollars.
You're an angel. Straight pipes and pod filters with 140 main jets, 40 pilots, and shimmed needles on my 1995 Thunderbird Mikuni carbs just haven't made the cut yet. Final stages of this years mods and I can't thank you enough for helping me figure out how to retain the ole lady's peak performance
Just got a 98 shadow 1100. It starts right up but loves choke. Idles fine no choke but back fires under acceleration until half choke is given. This video is very helpful along with your other content. Thankyou and keep making videos
Hi Cody, finally figured out how to donate to your cause. All the work you do and the information you give us is valuable. I feel better about myself now that I've donated to Motorcycle MD. I want to see you continue. Rock on brother. Ride safe.
Hey codi! You have helped me buy a great deal of a bike. Because of this video I found a VT800 that has a carburetor issue. Thanks so much. I am having a blast with my new Honda....
Great vid. I am putting back together a 1990 Suzuki 1100f katana. The guy I got it from made it a Frankenstein bike. I had for about 6 months now. Putting back all the right parts on it. Just bought the oem carbs for it. thank for the vid. Solved my carb problems.
Cody, thanks for another great video!! This helped me immensely on my Bandit 400 project. I have been chasing a dead #3 cylinder and played with the carbs a bunch. I was unsure whether it was a fuel or a spark problem. This morning I drained the float bowls, pulled the air filter and gave the motor some hits of starter fluid. She fired on all 4 cylinders which I was able to measure with my IR temp gun. Success!!! Guess it's time to re-watch your carb videos. Thanks again:):):)
I sent you an email on the website. You responded really well and now you've posted this video. Safe to say you're my favourite UA-camr at the moment and I really appreciate what you do. Any time someone asks me about carbs I quickly watch your videos again, then seem really smart when I tell them haha! Thank you Cody, keep up the awesome work!
+Usual Suspect hahaha! Dude, this is super encouraging to hear. So glad you have had some nuggets to chew on and share with your friends! It's a privilege brother!
Another awesome video with everything you need to know without all the fluff. Thanks Cody and keep up the good work. I look forward to keeping your cheat sheet in my garage for quick reference.
Thanks man!! I’ve having some problems with my carbs, ordered all the parts an with de “cleaning carb vid” i’ll going to fix the problem!! Thanks Cody 😊🫡
nice logical cascade of problem solving. just bought my first old bike and will have to become proficient at understanding carbs and their fuel / air mix issues.
Not at all what I was looking for today but still totally awesome advice! Will definitely have to check out your website . I need all the learning I can get. Thanks for posting this great video.
I just detonated my engine. Thanks 🤣 thank you for the info. Now to apply it to my Weber carburetor. You have gained another subscriber P.S. I love ratchet noise LOL
this is alot of great information.. wish i had more people like you in california. recently purchased a 95 vulcan 88.. only running on on 1 cylinder but im pretty sure its cause a float in the rear cylinder is stuck closed and not allowing any gas!! choke does nothing just because im not getting any gas at all so tearing into floats.. but have a 83 v45 magna needing carb work too but pretty scared to touch those..
I just picked up a 83 gs1100 with 5800 Miles on it!! Going threw the carbs and having problems was hoping I could get contact info so I could reach out and ask a couple questions. Your videos have gave me a good understanding of my system thank you!!!
You are so helpful, thanks for the tips! I just bought a bike, a total noob but I work on cars, and I've never thought about the carbs building layers of nasty gas, im going to clean my carbs asap!!
1st time here. I gotta say I enjoy the brainstorming you do. legit i had the same issue and my bike was running only on choke. (81 honda cb750f). I'm gonna finish watching now. peace!!!
I've seen video one and this one. These are great videos. I ultrasound cleaned to Suzuki Intruder Mikunis. What you have pointed out here is great stuff on getting the bike going. I thankyou my friend@
Thanks for the trick with the starter fluid. After spraying in the carb then around the rubber carb mount, its a leak on the carb mount. So won't be stripping down the carbs for no reason. Sorted :-)
Great video!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hah, I've never actually needed to learn much about carbs until now (just got my first bike). They seem easier to understand then most people make it seem. I am an Automotive diag tech and when I have a fuel delivery issue I actually use propane to idle the vehicles into the shop. This would be if you don't have starter fluid to play with.
Thanks. This was a helpful video. I have a 1975 Honda CB750 that's a bit of a cold starter. First ride of the day I pull the choke up and hit the ignition. It starts fine, but I have to keep my hand on the throttle giving the bike just a little bit of gas to keep it running until it's warmed up. If I don't use the throttle to keep the RPM's around 1000 - 1200, it'll fall below 800 and cut off. A few seconds after staring it I'll turn off the choke and the RPM's always go up a bit, which confuses me. After a 3 or 4 minutes of warming up, the bike runs and idles great, right around 1200rpm. A lot of people have told me it's normal for these older Honda's to be cold starters, but the RPM's increasing as I turn off the choke doesn't make sense to me. Does that seem normal? I'm new to motorcycles and trying to learn the basics of how things work.
Amazing man!! Thank you so much. It really help the info what you show. I bought a CB 900 C few days ago, and I'm trying to familiarize with the vacuum sync thing. It's taking longer, but I wont give it up. Thanks again. William from Argentina
Good vid. I only have to worry about 1 cylinder love my Lil mustang fun to zip around town with just cleaned up the carb today. Now just need to redo the fuel line an filter. An away I go again.
I purchased a CB450SC. Been getting it back to operating condition. Bike would come off idle and stall. Restricted airflow into the airbox, and it would throttle up, but still had issues. Took the carbs out and cleaned, but still had the same problem. One side spark plug had a white spark, other side could not see anything. Swapped plugs, same result. Tested coil, was a bit out of spec in the book. Ordered a new cool, but still not 100% confident this will be the fix.
Very helpfull gonna try this,I let my bike warm up then when I hit the throttle to take off bike dies and won't turn back on,or ride it for like couple miles and at idle dies and won't start again hope cleaning carb helps
i struggled for 3 days to get my 77 GS750 to run off choke. when i put the bike back together i put the petcock vac line on the wrong tube and i also forgot to reset my fuel mixture screws(im due for a jet upgrade) but i picked it up as a bare frame so i went into the project blind 2 weeks and im finally at a point where i can ride it around the block and fine tune it
Cody what's up? great videos the information you provide is unbelievably great, I appreciate every bit of it. You are a good man, 1 quick question I have for you my friend is perhaps you might be able to help me. I have 1991 gixxer 750And I tried everything But the acceleration Doesn't come down at all It's very difficult to describe but stays at 3,000 RPM from there just won't come down I've tried pretty much every adjustment It's very difficult to describe but stays at 3,000 h and from there just won't come down I've tried pretty much every adjustment there is and could be something else, An air vent I don't know about , please help!!!!
Hi Cody! love the channel and your content! Have a question for you. I have a 1985 CB450SC Nighthawk and looking to do the airbox delete to make a scrambler type build. Can you shed some light on the mystery of pod filters and being able to properly tune the carbs for them? Thank you!!!!
Hey, once again another priceless vid. Your vids have helped me soooooo much during my first build so one question. In the tumb nail pic of this vid your cb has an additional tube between the carb and the pods. Do you have a vid on what difference they make and the design of them. I have dialed mine in with you recommended starting point of jet sizing for pods. Just battling a bit, I do understand they are tricky to get right. Dose the extra tube iron out issuse and make the bike sing. Thanks fir you time. Tim in NZ
Does spraying carb cleaner directly into the carb while it's running work? I've heard it's bad but I've always done it with my vehicles that had a carb.
Motorcycle MD. What would you recommend for a 1980 CB750C with Bike master Pods and a 4 into 1 Exhaust for the main and secondary main sizes? Current stock numbers are 126 main and a 68 secondary main. Where do you typically order your jets? Thank you in advance! Your channel is full of invaluable knowledge!
hi it very good info you provide wander if you can help me up i do have 02 Yamaha 1100 can you tell me how adjust the pilot screw on this motorcycle with the stuck pilot mixture screw how many turn go with it and if i use aftermarket screw mixture it be any different
Good Day Sir I must say that I'm extremely impressed with your work ethic and the skill set you have on Honda motorcycles. Well done. I do have a few questions that I'll be asking you along the way as I continue my CX 500 Racer build and one is, did you post anything on CX 500's with regard to common problems and are there any carb issues that you have addressed in previous videos. Apology if you have covered it previously , but I'm a recent subscriber and didn't find the time to go through your expansive range of videos yet. LOL!! Regards Joe ( RSA)
Did you know that cx 500 are a great bike mine back in the 80s started to run like a pig tried everything you never guess what it was lol it was the suppresser cap and did a bit more research and spark plugs have a shelve life too you test the plug take it out earth it out and turn it over the spark should jump from node across gap to earth if it jumps straight across not threw gap plug insulator nose is comprised replace hope this helps who knew plug caps break down lol
I didn't know that about ethanol. I'll spend a little extra on the good stuff from now on. Trying to revive an old 99 Honda Shadow 600 CD2 that sat for almost five years with no prep. It's running strong except... It won't idle without choke. I'm hearing clogged jets is the most likely issue.
TheMotorcycleMD how are you mounting it though? Duck tape around the head? Kidding but really would like to know how you are doing the point of view? It's pretty awesome

Got my shirt out here in Oregon today! It's an awesome shirt! Watching this video over and over before doing my carbs.
Lots of great diagnosis and informative bits! Really appreciate it, as I am trying to keep a couple of old bikes going. Mahalos!
1st time here. I gotta say I enjoy the brainstorming you do. legit i had the same issue and my bike was running only on choke. (81 honda cb750f). I'm gonna finish watching now. peace!!!
Great video . Thanks for the easy explanation.
Alot of videos I have a hard time concentrating on but this was good stuff
Great video! You just got another audience member.....Very Impressed !!!

Thank you for explaining things in such a friendly, simple way. This video was super helpful.
Very very helpful and well presented.

You speak alot of common sense. Well done
Nice video, very usefull tips, thanks from Wales UK, Gus
Thanks Coddy ! You make me save time and money so I gave you a donation :) Much Appreciate ! Cheers, Jeff
Good job like how you explain the parts purposes
Thanks for the trick with the starter fluid. After spraying in the carb then around the rubber carb mount, its a leak on the carb mount. So won't be stripping down the carbs for no reason. Sorted :-)
Thank you so much you've been very informative carburetors and very complicated to me
Brilliant video!!!
Another great vid man, keep them coming, great quality!
+Thomas Barlow thanks brother 🤙
Thanks dude! Easy explanation on crucial stuff, much appreciated! 🤙
Great video!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hah, I've never actually needed to learn much about carbs until now (just got my first bike). +4stringbazooka Haha! I imagine it would be a little tuff to reach for the airbox while driving 😂. Hope this video helps!
I'm new to motorcycles and trying to learn the basics of how things work.

does the direction of the angled pod filter affect how much air intake goes to the carb?

I didn’t even know that channel or that he did that! Man that is awesome! Welcome to the channel brother!
Love your videos man. Many thanks !
awesome info and very helpful. Thanks!
Does spraying carb cleaner directly into the carb while it's running work? I've heard it's bad but I've always done it with my vehicles that had a carb.
too much valuable knowledge for free.

Good Day Sir
I must say that I'm extremely impressed with your work ethic and the skill set you have on Honda motorcycles. LOL!!
Regards
Joe ( RSA)
Did you know that cx 500 are a great bike mine back in the 80s started to run like a pig tried everything you never guess what it was lol it was the suppresser cap and did a bit more research and spark plugs have a shelve life too you test the plug take it out earth it out and turn it over the spark should jump from node across gap to earth if it jumps straight across not threw gap plug insulator nose is comprised replace hope this helps who knew plug caps break down lol
2 fuel lines at 4:19 - which line feeds from the petcock, and where does the other line connect to?
If it’s a dual carb it’s a line to the other carb..
thanks for this its exactly what I needed, I'm going to get starter fluid now...
clear and precise...thanks
Your welcome David!!
So good!!
Excellent info thanks a lot please more on in line fours
great video very helpful
Starting fluid is a good carb cleaner too
Jesus had a motorcycle? haha I love your video brother keep the good work.
+Alberto Lopez He used it to start his donkey!
those sandals are not crash rated
Jesus did not have a motorcycle. Moses did though, "the roar of his Triumph was heard through out the hills"
@@mikepayne7403 in the old ten commandments movie there is a car driving around in the back ground that got past the editors !
Awesome videos man. Also, I really like the point of view camera angle. What are you using to do that?
Go Pro hero 4!
TheMotorcycleMD how are you mounting it though? Duck tape around the head? Kidding but really would like to know how you are doing the point of view? It's pretty awesome
Can you do a video on how to tune Keihin FCR carbs?
