When I was in Dublin in 1994, right after Kurt Cobain died, I’d just recorded a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit and when I started it, all the lighters came out and everybody was singing. You’d have thought that it was planned. Thousands of people were singing softly, like a lullaby. It was beautiful. It was almost like we were singing Kurt to bed. It was quite a moment and it was really out of my control. I was a part of something with them. -Tori, Q Magazine, 2001. RIP Kurt.
Kurt cobain in his 1993 interview said this cover was "flattering" and that him and Courtney used to wake up to it and jokingly do interpretive dances to it😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
This recording, so well done, does prove what a fine composition "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is. Stripped down it still is captivating. It doesn't hurt to have Tori's talents handling it.
+skyblaze eterno I wager she learned a lot working with Robert Plant on Down By The Seaside (albeit the original LZ studio rec is untouchable imho). I anticipated something much like this coming here just now_ it's respectable & I imagine Kurt would have given it a B or B+. He had an eclectic taste when it came to his personal record collection. Cobain's love of music was like a oak tree__the roots were deep & strong and the mighty bough & every branch laden with bloom (in a nutshell). okay, bye!
Ike Sweat I imagine Kurt would have given it a B or B+. He had an eclectic taste when it came to his personal record collection. I am glad you said that - in another video which listed Cobains favorite songs they were all this lo-fi mediocre punk stuff
skyblaze eterno I can't get through Future by Leonard Cohen without my mind goes back to Kurt at some point & I really love his little cover of the Beatles And I Love Her.
Ike Sweat This came out before Kurt left us and he actually commented on it as "flattering". If you search, "Kurt Cobain December 13th, 1993 - Pier 48, Seattle, WA" and check minute marker around 42 min, 20-30ish seconds, you'll see where he is asked about the Tori Amos cover of this song.

I was at her concert in Hamburg on 10th April 1994 - five days after Kurt took his life. I didn't know, she had already recorded the song prior as a B-side. She sang it as an homâge to him. It was haunting, but so incredibly beautiful & respectful. One of the most wonderful moments I have experienced during a live gig. Thank you, Tori.
Wow, I'm only hearing this version now. I can remember when Tori first came out, and this is just an amazing cover. Haunting, totally different but beautiful
+33Luger Disputable, best song, yes. But no, it das not make it her's. Hurt has become Johnny Cash's, cause he absolutely outperforms Nine Inch Nails. Just as Gary Jules did it with Tears for Fears. But besides this to be a great cover, it does not trump Nirvana's recording. It's awesome. Both are awesome.
Way back in my college days, I had to write a compare and contrast paper and chose this song. Kurt Cobain and Tori Amos. Completely different yet very much the same. Have you ever heard the phase, “Anger turned inward is depression and depression turned outward is anger” What can I say, I was a Psych Major. Both beautifully well done.
Wow this is so beautiful! I was so blessed to get to see Tori when she played in San Diego. Some people play music-Tori is music!!! Tori is my favorite pianist, singer, and songwriter period...
I've heard this song a million times but Rick Beato said this cover was great .... and look at me now, learning some of the words I had wrong all this time lol
Just stumbled upon this, always liked Tori, but this cover was absolutely amazing. I think these lyrics suit her song style beautifully. One of my favourite covers hands down.
He heard it and he did appreciate it. Here's the MTV interview: MTV: What did you think of the Tori Amos cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Cobain: Flattering. MTV: Is it true that you and Courtney Love used to wake up and dance around to it? Cobain: Yeah. We used to put it on every morning and have breakfast and dance around. We'd turn it up really loud and do interpretive dancing to it. It's good breakfast music.
This is the first time I've ever heard this, but this is incredibly done cover of a Nirvana classic it's not every day I say that as I love Nirvana but this is brilliant R.I.P Kurt
This just has a feel of being the silent kid that never gets invited to the party, walking through the mess left after the party and feeling left out, sad, and a bit angry.
If you read the piano music you can see her genius. She echoes main melody of the song at times when that melody isn't being sung. And her bass, though simple, is off beat and conveys the rhythm of the original. All of it plays on your subconscience.
Former WCW wrestler Maxx Payne brought me here thanks to his interview he did about his wrestling career and the story about him and Mick Foley listening to this song on a car ride.
"This is horrible". Why? Cause she made it different? Cause it's not Kurt Cobain singing the vocals? Cause it doesn't sound note for note like the original? It kind of defeats the point of a cover if it sounds like the original, doesn't it? Kurt Cobain liked Tori's version of it and he would dance around the kitchen with Courtney Love to it, plus the band would come on stage to it at live gigs. It's okay if you dislike it, but you've got to give Tori props for having the balls to make it different. Would you rather listen to this or the Smiley Virus version (carbon copy more like)?
The piano is simply incredible. Thx to Rick Beato for introducing me to this song.
Same.
Ditto
I have to say that this is one of the best cover songs that has ever been made. She masterfully turn it into something so haunting and beautiful.
Agreed!
💯
totally.

Thanks for sharing this ♥️
@@zedsyzygy205 thank you, I forgot that I did and I'm so glad that I did
Tori is always like some perpetual genius to us: « Let me give it a think... »
He didn't kill himself tho
In my ears, the original is the party and the cover is the hangover that comes with it...and I mean that in the best way possible.
I think understand what you mean, the post drunk depression. It's the worst.
Omg wow
That's a beautiful and pretty deep analysis.
Of course. Since you have down syndr0me
One of the best covers of any song ever -- no doubt!
THIS. IS ART.
It's OK but "Princess Chelsea - Come As You Are" is better than this.
This recording, so well done, does prove what a fine composition "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is. Stripped down it still is captivating. It doesn't hurt to have Tori's talents handling it.
like or not THIS is how you make a cover version...not some BS like adding a snare drum to the mix...a complete stripping down and re-building

Iconic cover. This was originally on the Crucify single EP. In early 90s this was a rather hyped cover. Love it.

Have you tried Patti Smith's cover of this song?
@@WayneAshleyAllen i hadn't but thanks for the recommendation, checking it out now

Tori Amos' finest cover, and one of the best covers of all time, period.
The tension in the chorus on this cover is superb. Her best recording after "Winter". Love it.
This is actually a brilliant cover.
Lucas Mitagvariya IMO, her best song. Makes it her own.
+33Luger Disputable, best song, yes. But no, it das not make it her's. Hurt has become Johnny Cash's, cause he absolutely outperforms Nine Inch Nails. Just as Gary Jules did it with Tears for Fears. +Johpick Or what Joan Jett did to "I Love Rock and Roll".
Johpick 100% correct and fully agree w. everything u just said
+Johpick lmao. good joke.
Loved her rendition of this song. Really emotional take on it.

One of my favorite covers of any song EVER
This is one of my favorite interpretations of this song. Bleak. Mournful. Pensive.
almost 25 years ago and still so effective. great cover!

+cobean omg, i keep finding you :)
Nobody heard or cared about it then or now.
I just played this for my boyfriend in the car the other day. He'd never heard this cover before. Brought him to tears.
you can not beat the original but this is probably the best alternative version of this song I have heard.
✨🧚♀️✨Rick Beato always bringing us back to you! Love you so…Be blessed, Tori✨💖✨
"Oh, well, whatever, never mind" - perhaps my favorite rock lyric ever.
Wow this is so beautiful! I was so blessed to get to see Tori when she played in San Diego. Some people play music-Tori is music!!! Tori is my favorite pianist, singer, and songwriter period...
I love Nirvana and legacy of Kurt. This version is just awesome. Thank you.
I watched her perform this live right after Kurt died. It was a truly moving moment
This is amazing!
First time having heard it.
I feel that if there was a song playing at Kurt’s funeral… it’d be this! ❤️
I'm worst at what I do best, And for this gift I feel blessed. Our little group has always been, And always will until the end...
So beautiful and sad.
I've heard this song a million times but Rick Beato said this cover was great .... and look at me now, learning some of the words I had wrong all this time lol
Beautiful.
Thank you Rick Beato.
This cover was used as an introduction to Nirvana's Roskilde concert in 1992
you can check the full concert on UA-cam
Amazing, like a soft B side to the powerful original scream
I love this cover, loved it for decades.
She did manage to make it sound extremely sad and creepy though :) kudos.
Just stumbled upon this, always liked Tori, but this cover was absolutely amazing. I think these lyrics suit her song style beautifully. One of my favourite covers hands down.
This is such a beautiful cover of the original kurt would appreciate this

haunting
Miss you Tori and 90’s
Brilliant.
This is by far the best cover of SLTS song 👍
What's up Hasan, it's Zaben.

Amazing tribute.
Thank you Tori ⭐🖤⭐
One of the best covers of all time.

Beyond a beautiful cover, brought tearz to my eyez✨
Thank you for the great music!
I really like Tori, why does he always have concerts in some concert halls without light, the atmosphere is always smelling
Que linda que ficou nessa versão.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
ok gonzalo lira this is actually good.
absolutely love this, definitely going to be learning this on piano
Listen to original nirvana version
+Therango32 I listen to Nirvana already and love the original, too. This cover is lovely.
Have you found sheet music for it...?
Musical genius.
Rick Beato sent me here after your interview with him at his channel...WOW, he was right...this is so totally gorgeous!!!! 💗💗💗
Beautiful
This is the best version of this song. I like it better than the original.
Terrific! I think Curt would love it!
Kurt did love it
holy shit, one of a kind! amazing cover
Beautiful in a haunting way though .. ❤
Amazing!!! i love you!!! i need official video by Tori Amos :p
The Queen 👸🧡 🔥
Beautiful ❤️
Gary Jules - Mad World and Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirt and the only covers I 100% support
There are a few other covers I'd add to the list, but those are definitely 2 of my favorites of all time
Love this version and Nirvana's. Don't usually like the cover and the original equally!
This just has a feel of being the silent kid that never gets invited to the party, walking through the mess left after the party and feeling left out, sad, and a bit angry.
Very nice!
What is a gorgeous cover. X

It's really dark to me. But really different and good.
Nice cover. Very well done from Tori. 👏🏻🙂 Thanks.

I actually don't think Kurt liked it. When asked about it in an interview, he laughed, made a sarcastic remark, and then called it nice.
He actually did like the song because Kurt & Tori knew each other
He liked it.
He referred to as "a great breakfast cereal version", which was a compliment.
He may have liked it (or not) but why would him knowing her have anything to do with it??
Freaking awesome cover!!!
i adore this
Holy shit!!! This is unbelievable! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I like every cover she does
The greatest cover song ever 🤗
The best cover👏👏👏
In the book “Come As You Are”Kurt mentions how him and Courtney used to listen to this every morning while eating breakfast
BEATO!
Thank you, Ari.
tori como siempre divina
Kurt loved this version
Girl play that piano. Beautiful cover.
This song Nirvana was released with 5 songs before Little earthquakes and the first time I heard Toei perform via a cassette in LA. 1991.
The live version is next level
I love this version. She sings it like a murder ballad.
Beautiful.
*What A gorgeous cover. X
Yeah she killed it. This is a billion times better than the original.
*sarcasm*
big Tori fan, but no, it's good thoug
Amazing
woooow. great one
Tori amos and Nirvana 😍😍
the song becomes more dark and depressive here, cool.
the original is better but still a nice cover.
Is this just piano and vocal?
I like it...though I would much rather rock out to the original than be soothed by this version
GOD bless the Muse. God bless us all.
Love this Nirvana cover.
I love this♥
smells like a good cover
