We do have them here in Vienna, but they are not common. For Sweden (where i grew up and lived for some 40 plus years), it is among the most common birds there are. I love their song, when one hears it, it is SPRING! I feel satisfied for a week or so, and then I await the swifts - my favorite bird of them all. The chaffinches are a necessarily part of the build up. Great birds!

Nice video. As an American, the Chaffinch is one of my favorite European songbirds. I actually used to have them in an aviary years ago. Their song reminds me very much of my native House Finch but it "tighter" sounding but has the same overall downward trend.

They certainly are in New Zealand. My wife has created a bird sanctuary, simply by planting the right flowers, trees etc and her reward has been the massive increase in all sorts of bird wildlife. We love to sit and watch as the chaffinches feed on seed heads and even off the feeding trays,.....simply wonderful,.....

I'm lucky to work in my own little studio backing on to a little bit of woodland and have an extremely territorial Chaffinch. He spends March to July attacking my windows (obviously seeing his reflection) and I'm almost oblivious to it now. Have tried lights on, lights off, blinds down, windows open, cut out cats stuck on the window, but nothing deters the little scamp. At least I know it's only for a few months a year.
