For real. Dante was chosen so perfectly to voice Zuko, It suits the character so much and doesn’t sound cringy at all 🩷 Not important fact, but I find his voice so damn attractive too 😩🫶 ( ofc gotta mention - all voice actors choices are top tier for this show)

I love Zuko, but he is sorta supposed to be a cringe teenager. I think Dante Basco does a great job as his VA.
No one else could've played Zuko. He did an amazing job.
1. Zuko was punished and punished horribly (that scar) for caring about the lives of draftees in his Nations Army. 2. Zuko was barely 13 at the time he was banished. No one had seen the Avatar for almost 100 years and it was widely believed he was dead. Thus, after scarring Zuko for being too caring and 'speaking out of turn' in first war meeting, his 'father' was sending him on what basically amounted to a Snipe Hunt. It's doubtful he ever wanted him to return. The Zuko you see today is the result of an abused and confused teen struggling to find and capture the Avatar 'at all cost' to him and his crew in the mistaken belief this will get his 'Honor', position, and family (not much of one, really) back
versus his natural more 'caring' nature.
Yea his character has a lot of depth. That makes him a lovable unlikable guy 😂
Agreed. In the comics there was a time where the fire lord doubted Zuko was even his son. (It is revealed he is truly his son) Azula was always his favorite child and the only one he even remotely cared about. It is clear he never intended for zuko to take the throne. Only his prodigy daughter once he created his empire.

Fun fact about Aang's air scooter that they never tell you in the show, But the fact he invented it is what got him the title of air bending master which is what the Tattoos he has symbolize. I think its neat you don't see any of the kids have just to farther show how distant he is from the other kids.

The idea of identifying Aang as the Avatar by having him choose certain toys was based on how Tibetan monks identify the Dalai Lama.
The Tibetan monks would present the suspected Dalai Lama with numerous objects.
If he chose the one that belonged to him in a previous life, the monks would take this as a sign that he was the reincarnated Dalai Lama.
And just to make this even cooler: the current Dalai Lama is named Tenzin Gyatzo! Coincidence? I think NOT!

FYI: historically, Gyatso (which translates to "ocean" in Tibetan) is a name that all Dalai Lama except the first have, in addition to their first name - so the current Dalai Lama having the name Gyatso is not surprising in any way. Also his first name Tenzin is not his birth name and roughly translates to "holder of the teachings/Buddha Dharma". Point being, it's cool that ATLA has so many references to Tibetan Buddhist culture, and absolutely not a coincidence, but Buddhism came first lol
14:04 tbh I don't think Aang would go be able to do much against the Fire Nation at the time. He didn't have the Avatar State or the other three elements. Yes, he's the Avatar, but that was only a title. He was just a normal Airbender like everyone else. So Katara's pretty much right, it's unlikely that Aang would have survived the attack.
Well he always had the Avatar state (slight book 2 spoiler) but he finds out then that the Avatar state protects him during times of crisis and trauma even though he doesn't fully know how to wield it yet, so he _probably_ would have been able to enter the Avatar state if he was there when the fire nation attacked -- but yeah he probably wouldn't have been able to sustain it and would have risked (BIGGER SPOILER 🚨) losing the Avatar cycle forever if he had [redacted] while fighting the fire nation like that

14:07 i gotta disagree here. at this point, aang still doesn't know how to get into and out of the avatar state at will. he still cant control his body in those moments, nor can he bend any of the other elements. he's barely even done any significant training. if aang did fight the fire nation instead of run away back then, he wouldn't be able to defeat them all singlehandedly. he's nowhere even near that powerful yet

Also to answer your question, Agni Kai can be derived from two places: Agni is the Hindu god of fire and most probably from Sanskrit meaning fire. Kai can mean meeting ( I believe in Japanese) but it may have originally been Agni Ki which means “fire duel”but they decided to keep it as Agni Kai in the show

The Avatar is powerful because he can learn all 4 elements. Aang at 12 is only a good Airbender and has no control of the avatar state. There is no way he would defeat a Firebending army empowered by the comet.
What's even worse is that Ozai sent Zuko on what was essentially a snipe hunt. People had been searching for the Avatar for a century, Royal Family included, and no one had found him. So naturally, people who were born and grew up after he vanished came to believe the Avatar didn't exist anymore or never existed and was just a fairy tale. Ozai just wanted Zuko gone and decided to make it happen in the most cruel way possible. (besides outright killing him, of course)

I agree with Zuff I always wondered how that old lady got up there. Like both Aang and Katara are benders and had to use either bending or appa to get up there but a women 6 times their age just was just able to scale rocks during a storm with ease?
If you look closely at 6:55 there seems to be a slope going down so I think the old woman climbed it using that, maybe?
There's a pathway leading up to the cave. All she had to do was walk.

It turns out Zuko wasn't all that bad of a guy. He got banished for trying to stand up against a plan to sacrifice new-recruits. As Iroh said, "Zuko was right, you see, but it was not his place to speak out".

Agni is the Hindu god of fire, and is also just the Sanskrit word for fire. Interestingly, this same root got preserved in some other Indo-European branches. E.g. it's cognate with the Latin word for fire, "ignis", which you might recognize as the root of English words like "ignite".

Many people are curious how the old woman gets to the cave. My theory on this is that she's an earthbender so she's able to create her on path to the cave entrance. She would also be able to slide across the ground as the earthbenders who captured Iroh did or sink into the earth and pop out else where like Bumi does at the end of his fight with Aang as means of quick travel.

I love the mirrored structure of this episode, it’s used a few times throughout the show. Such an artful way to establish the similarities and struggles of the protagonist and the (current) antagonist. One of my favorite episodes from book one easily
Now looking at it through adult eyes I can see why Zuff might call Zuko cringe, the writers didn't do a good job of seamlessly transitioning between their A and B storylines in the first season. Zuko's storylines just feel so randomly abrupt we don't get a lot of time with him earlier on but it def gets better. Remember y'all the creators said it themselves it took a while for them to really hit their stride they didn't even think about character development and backstory at first it became something that progressed over time for them. The show changes from clearly being children's television to something anyone can enjoy.
highly highly recommend watching Five Feet Apart, it's such a meaningful movie

14:03 The firebenders were exponentially more powerful because of the comet. Without the comet is a different question, but the Avatar state isn’t bulletproof and an army of firebenders under Sozin’s comet is certainly capable of overwhelming a 12yo untrained avatar whose only hope and prayer would be the avatar state
