BMW's original Z4 had a lot going for it. The styling still looks good today whether you chose the soft top or the coupe, it was well built, drove well and wasn't priced exorbitantly. Perhaps BMW rested on their laurels a little too long with that car though, because before the Bavarian company knew it, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche were all forging ahead with designs that suddenly put the Z4 quite a long way down many buyers' shortlists. The solution was an all-new car that was launched without great fanfare but which was nevertheless a huge step forward. It's hard to believe that car appeared back in 2009, but it did and now used examples are available at reasonable prices. Here's what to look out for.

I have a 2010 Z4 twin turbo 3.0 litre and I absolutely love this car. The hard top is what I really love. I wish they would have kept it on the newer model. I was never a roadster guy but I really love this car it's fast and handles great.

    Here we have a 2011 Z4 35is. Now for almost 8 years.
Bought with 50k kilometers. Now at 231k kilometers.
We love it and we drive it.... a lot. Around town and into the Alps, Pyrenees, etc.
Been looking at the new one but it hasn't made me greedy so far.
Added a better oil thermostat (opens at lower temp).
Added a better intercooler (Wagner Intercooler Competition Evo 2, tube&fin vs the stock bar&plate).
And had it soft tuned. 410hp and 630nm.
It wasn't a slouch to begin with, but now it's really strong and fast.
With the milage on it, it doesn't make sense to trade it in.
So it'll be here to stay, whatever is next :)

Currently on my second E89 2.0 M sport and after having an engine remap, the car is absolutely awesome.

I like my manual 2011 Z4 3.0i, it is Atacama Yellow which brings a bit of Miami or Sunset Strip to even the darkest UK November!
The interior is hard wearing black smooth leather and yellow suede… and beautifully stitched with yellow cord… with the steel folding roof, power and handling… it is a fantastic machine.
Things I do not like includes (would you believe it) some of the engineering decisions I never saw on any Porsche or Audi I have owned.
For example… Some very basic operations require removal of a LOT of other items.
Construction of sub systems, then fitting to the chassis means a simple sump gasket replacement becomes a 4 hour job that requires huge dismantling including a gearbox and clutch housing removal to clear the sump tray.
Many owners can attest to the loss of battery power which locks you out of the boot… where you guessed it the battery lives should you need to replace it!
    Great review. Liked and sub’d.

You can definitely use the roof while the car is moving :) you actually have three coded options, 0kph (stationary operation) 20kph (driving operation) and 50kph (slightly faster driving operation). Just thought I would put that out there.

While you can code this into the pre-facelift cars, the post-facelift cars had their roofs reinforced to deal with the added stress of it moving on the move. The title references the pre-facelift models, thus it likely was not an option. Just thought I would put that out there.

The 1st gen coupe looks genuinely special in almost an e-type way. This one, while attractive, doesn't invoke the same feeling in me.

Nah, the Z8 looks special. Z4 1st gen doesnt look good, it looks outdated and 2nd gen is genuinely just better in every aspect and refined to perfection.

Do yourself one favor if you are thinking about getting one: find out exactly what the insurance bill will be. And don't believe for a second, on the upfront side, that if you are older, with a perfect driving record, it will mean squat to the insurance company. All they know is that now, you are no longer in category A--now you are in B--the category with a lot of accidents, so forget who YOU ARE, or YOUR record. I'm not saying "don't buy", but after you get the good news on the rates--YOU might decide to not buy. Just run the numbers, ALL of them, then decide. Don't buy and assume you on in the clear, then run down to see the insurance people. Don't do that.

Insurance rates are easy to get. But in SC, home of the original Z3, the State/County won't tell you what your taxes will be until long after the purchase. And personal property taxes here are as bad as California.

In Japan, the 4 cylinder versions of the new generation z4 and supra are sought after thanks to their much lighter front end weight and more agile handling. Add a stage 2 tune, brake kit, uhp tires, aero spoiler, diffuser and skirt, carbon bucket seats, sports steering.... And you're looking at nearly 310hp of pure cornering machine. Would scare the socks of most stock Porsches...
You already have m sport suspension so no coilovers and suspension mods are really necessary...
But i do get what you mean, a 6 cylinder would sound racy, but the Z4 is just so good when setup to be lighter and more dynamic.
I'm dealing with my big engine and exhaust sound fetish by purchasing a mustang V8 a few years down the line. Won't be craving for 6 cylinders then!

@@benfinegoldsociety8312 Coming from a Corvette to the N20 in the E89, I have to say that this little 4 banger sounds like a sewing machine at idle. Absolutely pathetic. Before the Vette sells, I need to get an MP4 of the exhaust note at idle so I can play it in the Z4 at stops. EV's sound better than this thing. LOL. You're rustang sound will stir your soul.

This generation deep throats every other roadster in terms of class and power. It even glows further when you go with the n54 twin turbo and drop a few thousand in mods and boom, super car speed. 50% chance of engine blow out.. not too shabby

Great car but the roof is an absolute nightmare with one fault after another what’s the point in a convertible where you’re almost too afraid to press the roof button ! Oh and the roof can fail in any position with all your gear often locked in the boot

    • @cjmadura
      @cjmadura 4 місяці тому

The roof indeed looks like a nightmare. There are far too many stories and videos showing the complicated electrical system for that top. I'm leaning towards a Gen 1 coupe in light of that system, but I suppose I could buy a Gen 2 and simply forget I have a foldable roof. Gen 2 looks more relaxed and refined, but the Gen 1 coupe is a solid, distinctive car - but alas, a lot more difficult to find.
