- A look back at the 1980-81 OSU basketball team, which won its first 26 games and spent 8 weeks ranked as the #1 team in the country before losing in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament (finished 26-2 overall, 17-1 in the Pac-10).
This shouldve been a final 4 team
The fact that this team did not make it to the Sweet 16 is one of the most astonishing facts in the last 35 years in the NCAA Tournament. In fact, 1980-81 was the last time that the top two ranked teams in the final pre-tournament poll did not make it to the regional semifinals.
The early 1980s OSU Beavers had the same qualities at the 1977 Trailblazers -- great team chemistry, movement away from the ball and enthusiasm. Loved them both, and still do!
They won that game at UCLA and that was awesome. UCLA rarely lost at home. Sorry unless we won the whole tournament, it would have been tough losing any NCAA Tournament game.
I Remember Watching this Team during the N.C.A.A. Tournament. They were pretty good 🤣😊😊
I remember when they beat St.John’s in NY in a nationally televised game.
Thanks for posting this. I worked on this piece while working at KOIN. In the five plus years I was there this is one of the packages I'm most proud of, and regret not walking out of there with a high-res version for my reel.
Big thanks to Dan C for really making it all come together.
The K State game seemed to have a bit of favoritism from refs who I do believe called Steve Johnson for a foul when some guy just ran into him and bounced off his set body. A game so close that things like that made all the difference. I'd love to see that again.
That was some afternoon of upsets back in 81.DePaul went down,US Reed from Arkansas hit a half court shot to beat Louisville and Blackmon for K-State hit the dagger to send OSU home. Also Danny Ainge drove down the lane to lay one in over the outstretched hand of Orlando Woolridge of ND.
What a season the Orange Express! Many great victories!
Rolando Blackmon made the biggest basket in K-State history 😄 EMAW!!!
Could the title not have the picture of that tough loss?
Nice video....as great as that team was, I always thought they were better the year before when they finished the season #5 in the polls. They were a more balanced scoring team, and seemed to play looser than the Johnson dominated senior season.
Lost in first round, not second. I remember, I was watching.
Second round, Oregon State had first round bye due to being ranked #1 in their region
Stout went to LO, not Milwaukee.
that lonnie shelton team was good 2
