In this video, I repair a lawnmower deck that is cracked where the engine mounts. This is a common problem that I see and requires some metalworking skills to repair.

Well done sir..!
Well Don sir
That turned out much better than I expected it to! You did a great job welding without burning through...even filling in that huge gap.
Nice work, but if the deck mounts are cracked like that it’s pretty much guaranteed that the engine has a bent crank and it’s been vibrating big time.
I really like these types of videos. This is the type of repairs and tinkering in the garage that I do.
More to come! Thanks
I'm impressed the mulch plug is in place under the discharge chute. Stealth mulching!
Good fix. Thanks for the video. Hope you show it after the tube is installed. Thanks
Nice fix on the deck. Around my area you can find people selling decks for $10-$20 which would have been a good route. This would be a great option for a mower you own though. the paint matched well too.
I've only seen that type of damage (cracked deck/broken intake pipe) on mowers with bent shafts. Would check that first before doing repair. It was a good welding tutorial.
Good call! There was a bent shaft. I have a crankshaft straighter that I use. I am in a lockdown here, so I have some extra time for tinkering. That's all.
Nice Fab work on the deck Bob.That mower must of had a hard life with all the problems it had.
You know I don't think many would weld in pieces to fix the frame. Instead they would just put the engine on a different frame and call it good. This was a great fix and welding job. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Great point! I'm in a lock down and just keeping busy.
Right time is money But that’s a great fix, nice job 👍
Good video.Good attention to the work elements and no extraneous bs. I enjoy seeing a salvage returned to use and with the proper job you did it will give good service. While it may not be cast effective it serves as a good tutorial as to what is possible. Any story behind how it could have so much damage? Was it a prop in a disaster movie? In my youth our mechanic used oil cans and wire coat hangers to repair rust hole damage on autos and it turned out great. I owned 2 of them for a while. I would have done inserts on the wheel centers since they still had good tread.
I did end up finding some pipe to fit in the original wheels worked at well.
Wow That was a big commitment to a free push mower.
Turned out good though
Great job I've done a few free mowers like that too . what brand and color of green did you use looks like a close paint match
Not sure. I will check it out. The main thing I did was wipe away the overspray off the Craftsman letters with carb cleaner.
hi your friend Bruce sent me over . He machined you name on on of hid videos . So here I am . Let's get fixen . Thanks
Looks good, not something I would do, I might of pulled the engine and scrapped the deck .
If we were living in a "normal world" I would too. I have a lot of tinkering time these days.
Sometimes it makes you think am I really making enough going to all the trouble to give a mower new life , I know I've done the same thing too . Good job ....
You look at it, and it needs something else. More time, and you go in a little deeper. Yep, sometimes it is the principle and a labor of love.
Neat fix Bob.
Nice good job great welding skills.
Things are not always as simple as one would think. This is my type of fix as you would know.
Just fiddling around I'm in a lock down after all.
Is the part you welded on not a little higher than the deck? If so, wouldn’t that cause a problem of uneven cut or vibration and crank damage.
I saw where you said the crank was bent but you have a straightener.
Subscribed and will be watching more.
You're right, the labor rate would be a "Deal Breaker" for a Customer. Nicely done, though! 👍
A type of round bolting flange, ring, plate that mounts from below the mower deck would be the easiest way to repair the deck and bolt holes. I am trying to find that product right now. unfortunately i cannot find anything that would fit to work, so unfortunately i am going to have to fabricate one.
(Also the crank shaft of that engine is probably bent, which caused the cracking of the mower deck at the bolt holes).
great fix
I like videos like that. How does someone break a mower so many different ways? 🤦♂️
bent crank and blade = vibration
Wow, you did an excellent job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Another great job. Well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks pretty good.👍
Hey Double, What model/brand of welder do you have ? also is it 120v/or 220? I looking for a welder to do simple jobs around my home... Thanks
What area you service
Great Video, thanks
My first mower was a craftsman. The housing cracked in a different place. I welded it and it cracked in another place. That was 40 years ago.
Probably a bent crank causing it.
doublewide6 Repairs LLC possible but I doubt it. As I recall, the mower didn’t vibrate excessively. It wasn’t an expensive mower.
Too bad they don't sell deck repair rings for push mowers like they do for John Deere riding mowers. Nice job on your repair.
Great point! With a CNC machine you could make some money selling them on Ebay.
@@doublewide6 or a table plasma cutter , I had 50 made for 8$ a ring.
I weld it up on bottom and try not to mess with paint
I remember doing the same repair to my mower 3 years ago
Is it still holding up?
@@doublewide6 yes. Used the mower yesterday
Where and what color paint did you use?
You rock.
Where did you buy the spray paint at as well as the name of it?
I don't know what it was, but I used cab cleaner to wipe away the overspray on the Craftsman letters which made it look really good.
GOOD SHIT! NOT CACA! 😷👍👏
My first question is, why? It's a $30 push mower after you fix it. Remove the engine and save it for a decent body. If it was self-propelled, well maybe. You'll have more time and money in it than it's worth. Good practice though. Sorry for the negative, but I see a lot of videos where individuals spend a lot of time and money on something that in the long run just isn't worth it. Just my opinion.
I'm in a lockdown and just tinkering around. This was actually a fun project and many viewers like it. It is not as straight forward as a carb repair. Thanks for watching.
@@doublewide6 Sorry for the negative feedback, after I left the comment I kinda' thought that was the case, just something to make a video with. Keep up the good work Bob, I do like your videos.
Well done it would of been to easy if you had the correct size pipe 😁 , ( these companies know that they better change their design) or no one will be buying mowers for a wile !
Great point!
its going to cut the grass just fine!
yup. I already cut my lawn.
good salvage income during lock down
Just tinkering around to keep busy here.
500$ repair on a 200$ mower?
So don't buy a Craftsman lawn mower, lol!
