    AS a Boater it is always fascinating to watch non boaters trying to drive a boat the same way as they drive their car - everything done fast. Sloooowly, Sloooowly is what's needed in port. Like other posters, i'm surprised you do not have a rear camera view screen to view when on your docking stations.

    You make the difficult seem easy.
    It really took little time, considering the mass of the boat.
    So it's true - slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

    Tristen - Amazing boat handling skills by you and the crew. Thanks for showing us how its done. One of the best parts of the video is actually at the 9:30 or so mark when you come out of the port and in the distance is the sailing yacht “A”. If I am right, it is the largest sail assisted yacht in the world owned by a Russian businessman who also owns the motor yacht the “A”. We were chartering a catamaran this winter in Anguilla, St. Martin and St. Barts and he was there that week with the boat, so we saw it up close. Pretty amazing vessel with a crew of 65, according to a couple of people in port with whom we spoke. We sailed up to one day in Aguilla....it is really impressive! Thanks again for all of your videos. You and your crew are fantastic!

    my boating rule number one "never approach a dock at a speed faster than you want to hit it"

  • @UncleEarl97
    @UncleEarl97 5 років тому

    Outstanding close quarters maneuvering! I remember while doing a sea trial with my most recent boat, a twin engine 31 foot express cruiser power boat, then at the end in close quarters in the marina my boat broker said "if you hit another boat or the dock do you want to be moving fast or slow?" So I learned quickly that slow and easy in close quarters is essential. Our boat's front half really did act like a sail with wind. Because of that I learned how to cleverly back into the wind to maneuver into tighter spaces. Success was a rush!

    Really great episode Tristan! I loved all of the extra viewpoints that you gave us, plus your post-edit voice over as you were obviously a little preoccupied performing that extremely delicate and expertly helmed manoeuvre. When mooring, I am still not sure if you tension the ground lines to the fixed stern lines or vice-versa? More of these please. Can I also make another polite request for "a day in the life on board from Barbara's perspective" please.

    Neutral is your best friend! Nice and slow but if you have any problems put it straight in neutral! When using forward or reverse just click it into either gear for 1 or 2 seconds then straight back into neutral ! Asses then back into gear for 1 or 2 seconds then neutral again nice and slow cant go wrong! But your best friend is ALWAYS neutral !! Not difficult at all just patience and confidence! Great vid

    Totally insane! Wow, one has to clear the bow, the ground line of the boat in front, and turn the vessel whilst clearing the stern too, all at the same time!!! Talk about a tight spot! :O I'm shaking my head still trying to figure out how the wider stern cleared the other vessel's ground line. I mean, it was difficult enough for the narrower bow to clear it... just can't picture all of AWOL navigating this conundrum.
    It reminds me of the sofa I had delivered to my house last year - still can't figure out how they cleared an awkward doorway that opens into my den, but has a wall jutting out 1/3 of the way in front of the doorway. Supposedly they went "up" with the sofa and turned it, then walked it, then back down.... makes my head spin just thinking about it!!! LoL!!!

    Lots of questions -
    [1] - this is not the only video that you have mentioned "ground lines", have you made a video explaining what they are/how they are anchored to the sea bed/how you retrieve them to secure the bow of the vessel etc;
    [2] - you have another video, where, in going astern into the berth, you try to avoid the ground line on your starboard, but end up catching your (and theirs) fenders on the port side of the moored boat, was that prior to this video and/or a later one, you have an extensive library of your vessel/crew/daily activities;
    [3] - I have asked this before (in one of your Vlogs), based on you entering Port and berthing - WHY do the Port Authorities, "park" you in the most awkward/small/inconvenient [to you] space, surely they should know by now what the dimensions of your vessel are and should accommodate you accordingly .

      Exactly. Whatever happened to "self praise is no recommendation" etc? For impressive boat handling skills, check out any small fishing port where skippers routinely dock unaided in filthy weather at 3am in pitch darkness in a Minotaurean labyrinth to a haphazard structure festooned with jaggedly broken protruding rusty bolts, after 30 hours trawling without a break. No thrusters with joysticks, no dynamic positioning software, no walky talky-equipped articulate helpers handling enough lines to wrestle a Zeppelin, let alone attentive harbour-masters and heavily crewed, cooperative and alert neighbouring vessels ... and no fawning pack of craven sycophants on social media to bolster a self regard which (I'm guessing) responds to bolstering like a junky to a fix.
