Cupra Born surprises - Forget the MG4, Susan even prefers this to the Kia Soul which we ordered!

  • Finding the right car is hard, it's often the one outside your budget but for once a sensibly priced EV where I don't need lots of options or the top spec model to be happy.
This test drive proved 1) you need to drive them not just research on paper but 2) my wife if really hard to please and doesn't want to listen when somethi doesn't feel right to her.
The MG4 was a great option but at £32k it lost its value appeal to me.
The MG4 SE trim makes more sense but is too big a compromise.
The Cupra looked and felt good even in V1 trim.
Can honestly say I haven't driven a better EV since my Mini test. Cracking car with sensible range and features and very very comfortable

It’s nice seeing one of my daily routes from inside the Born!
I have an ID.3 which I love, same battery as the one you’re in there. Range varies but will be much better than the mini! However the mini is fantastic to drive. The Cupra is on much newer software than most ID.3’s on the road and most issues are now resolved so no worries there.
ID.3 waiting times are minimum 18months at the mo, but Borns tend to me much more readily available and their interior is far superior to the ID.3.
Go for the Born L2 if you can 😊

I love my Mini L3 and was really really disappointed by the ID3 I had for a weekend that I took it back after 24 hours - but the Cupra looks so much better quality inside than the ID3 and I was impressed with the efficiency you were able to achieve that I might now find the local Seat dealer and have a test drive …………. If it were my choice I would keep your Mini for those fun drives you might want to do and sell the E-Golf.

After owning a V2 Cupra born since June last year, there are plenty of things to like, but a few things that could be better. My only real dislikes are: no lighting on the heating/volume controls on the center screen, the my cupra app is terrible and buggy, I'd like a larger drivers speedo with more info on it and lastly, the fact it defaults to comfort mode on every startup rather than what I had it set to last. Likes: love how it drives, it's punchy when in performance mode, the head up display is great and also pleased with a good sized boot space. The touch controls take some getting used to, but I don't have a problem with them like other reviews go on about. Glad Susan enjoyed the test drive!

We had a similar dilemma replacing our original MG ZS EV, and as you commented in the MG4 video the salesmen are always talking finance straight off. I suspect it may be a bit of a journey for you from Norwich, but what really helped us was a visit to the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre in Glasgow (there is another one in Stafford), where they have all of the different EV's available for test drives, and more importantly do not have salesmen on site. I contacted them with our shortlist of EV's that we wanted to test drive based on paper research and they lined up test drives in all of them, they didn't mind when we rejected one before even driving it because of the rear seat space, and we even looked at some of the models that we'd initially not been interested in on paper. After that I then bought the actual car from a dealer online without test driving with the dealer.

It's supposed to be a step in the right direction re interior quality and software... there's even rumours (wishful thinking?) that they are ditching the haptic feedback buttons! Nice video, and sympathies, I think my wife also has a pair of those 'blinkers' that Susan was wearing in the MG4. I bought a V2 vapor grey in June 2022 (standard free colour) and car has heated seats and heads up display which is brilliant ( you don't need to look at the speedo as its projected on the windscreen in front of the drive). These are standard things on the V2 (the V1 does not have heated seats or head up display). I bought a pre built car as the waiting list was 6 to 12 months in June 2022. I would spec Pilot pack as this gives you reverse cross traffic. Self parking on mine has never been used. Hi
I was just watching your Vlog on choosing the right companies to provide hardware and what you actually want from your solar system. I am also from an IT background in the finance industry ( of a lesser type dealing with Comms / UPS / Networks and desktop environments. I agree with most of your Vlog but wanted to start a conversation with you concerning Battery storage (you can never have too much :) ).
I have a less complicated system using a Solis 3.6 kw inverter and 14.4 kW of PylonTech US2000 batteries 6 x 2.4 kW. one thing that you sort of touched on in your vlog was longevity of batteries. If you are pulling 5kW from your stack, that's basically 1kW from each at that point in time, therefore the harder you run the batteries the shorter their life.
My question is where do you think the balance is. I think 1kW is high for this type of system. my calculation max draw 3.6kW (size of my inverter) over 6 batteries = 0.6kW draw per battery. so system runs cooler and batteries 'SHOULD' last longer. Also this lessens export from solar to the grid as I use around 10kWh a day and leaves more solar charging of the batteries. The kick on is that you need less power to charge overnight. Additionally during summer months excess power is exported to grid.
Would like to hear your views. thx Stevo

There is a notch in the floor to get full power even in range mode. Interesting to see the entire drive done in B mode 🤔 I find D and let it roll easier to get range from mine. • @TrevorHa
      @TrevorHa Рік тому +2

@@EVPuzzle The music system is better than the id3, speakers are better for sure. Controls are not very smooth, 1 notch is a larger jump in volume than I would like. But moving the on screen slider is smoother. I even like the haptic buttons after a few months of use. The quick flick to accelerate is nice. It all makes sense after a few weeks of use. As for the screen the buttons are customisable and for the most part all you need is the car icon, climate icon top centre and you can driving data icon on the bottom.. Don't get me wrong there are some software issues with 3.0. My latest is the car is asking me to log in again. Doesn't affect the drive of the car etc but the little red dot annoys me. Taking it in next weekend to see if they can solve it. Oh and biggest is with the software is the prompts for "New settings available would you like to apply them now" and 1 time out of 3 it will turn off all my driving aides!!! But the bugs in the id software are well known about and being worked on. The Cupra tweaked version is better though.

I'd do a Pro vs Cons list with both perspectives to find which one stays.
    1. Uniqueness (snap, we have way less Mini's on the road than Golf's, but in EV guise, none for sale and a totally of 5 just to see the user appreciation and viability for South African heat. Mini's more in EV and truly for sale).
    2. Who will be the primary driver of the Mini or Golf after the Cupra, that person gets extra marks for the car they like the most. If the Mini goes, is the Cupra yours Nigel, or if the Golf goes is it Susan's. Or will the Golf and Cupra be Susan's and you need to beg for a car to go to the shops on your own???
    3. Economy
    4. Sense of how the car makes you feel
    5. Design and practicality
    Or
If you can, get the Cupra, and see which one you neglect in the next month or two, and sell the least used vehicle. Honeymoon phase would be over. But thereafter you might have created a monster, and Susan might be puzzled into, "I want this now" after you her next test and you'd buying and selling cars as soon as all your test are done.

We have ruled out a new EV due to the cost so will be looking for a used one later this year. It will be for my wife to replace her Skoda Karoq Edition (which I find really practical). She wants something smaller with 5 doors, hatch with reasonable boot & 160+ range. So that rules out the Honda-e (which I like but has no range or boot, also very expensive), Mini (2 doors no boot), Fiat 500e (2 doors no boot & expensive) etc. Charging will done at home only & used for local trips only so maybe a an e208, Corsa-e, Mokka-e or maybe an e-2008 or even an EC4. Dunno yet. I'm keeping my petrol estate for longer trips & holidays because I'm not ready to change it for an EV until someone offers a decent size EV estate (MG5 is too small). We did look at an MG4 but its just too dark inside & costly if you have to go up to the Trophy spec to get heated seats / steering wheel, camera, sat nav etc. etc. No rear wiper either! What is it with so many new cars that don't have a rear wiper? I guess driving an estate car makes me more sensitive to this but it's also because I have front & rear facing dash cams in our cars so a clean rear screen is needed for a decent image. For you I would keep the Mini & let the Golf go. If the Mini was available as a 5 door with a longer range, bigger boot & less than £22k it would be on our list.

If you haven’t yet, you (or rather Susan) really should test drive the Renault Megane before making any decision. A similar car to the ID3/Born. But you would, probably, want to go with the Techno trim to get Google Maps built in and then any colour other than white pushes it over £40,000.
You may also need the false boot floor accessory for Cracker as the boot is very deep otherwise.

That’s a interesting point as a drivers car ie like the mini a car you want to have fun in or a car you get into for enjoyment the born wins but for people that just get in a car to go from a to b but want ev and do few long distance trips and want new car I think the mg4 for the money is a good car if you don’t want frills or super high quality and saving 8-9k £ is alot I think like the old version mg5 for a big estate ev early £20k for space as a to b car or work car or for dogs etc it was great value for an ev no you wouldn’t have fun in it or it’s wasn’t that good car but the price was right but now it’s £30k s it’s puts it in different league we’re there is better cars for bit more money.

    • @johnjackman2743

Now found this Government Publication regarding the Autumn Statement, where the matter is referred to in paragraph 4, as the Expensive Car Supplement..............
VED on Electric Vehicles (VED) - From April 2025, electric cars, vans and motorcycles will begin to pay VED in the same way as petrol and diesel vehicles. This will ensure that all road users begin to pay a fair tax contribution as the take up of electric vehicles continues to accelerate. The government will legislate for this measure in Autumn Finance Bill 2022. This means:
new zero emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 will be liable to pay the lowest first year rate of VED (which applies to vehicles with CO2 emissions 1 to 50g/km) currently £10 a year. From the second year of registration onwards, they will move to the standard rate, currently £165 a year
zero emission cars first registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 will also pay the standard rate
the Expensive Car Supplement exemption for electric vehicles is due to end in 2025. New zero emission cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 will therefore be liable for the expensive car supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement currently applies to cars with a list price exceeding £40,000 for 5 years
zero and low emission cars first registered between 1 March 2001 and 30 March 2017 currently in Band A will move to the Band B rate, currently £20 a year
zero emission vans will move to the rate for petrol and diesel light goods vehicles, currently £290 a year for most vans
zero emission motorcycles and tricycles will move to the rate for the smallest engine size, currently £22 a year
rates for Alternative Fuel Vehicles and hybrids will also be equalised

Really a ID3 under the skin, but much better IMHO.
Don't see how this is even close to the Kia Soul you ordered though, chalk and cheese really ?.
Looks like the e.Golf is getting its P45 after the last trip before Xmas.
Really like the Golf, owned 6 of them.
What's not to like on the e.Golf - range to small, pure a simple.
ID3 has lost it's VW way, cheap interior for the money spent.
Cupra is the car the ID3 should have been.
    Bye Bye e.Golf.
This is why you see a lot of nice examples in great spec, up for sale with low mileages.
The majority can not make them work for them.
Great school run / local stuff, thats it !.

The luxury car tax on EVs (yes it does still exist - have checked) is a desperately short-sighted measure; it's incentivising people to buy the smaller battery variants of EVs, making their owners even more dependent on woefully inadequate public charging infrastructure, the expansion of which is not keeping up with EV sales.
Typical short-sighted money grab by this inept government. What it's actually doing is making me defer replacement of my £30 p/a tax diesel indefinitely.
