Freemasonry is a brotherhood of men who share one common goal: To help each other become better men. It is the oldest, largest and most widely known fraternal organization in the world. Men from all different backgrounds and walks of life come together as equals and improve their character by applying the timeless virtues of brotherly love, charity and truth to their everyday lives.
@Heartless Generally, no. However, there can be some extenuating circumstances, such as if just did something stupid as a kid AND have lead a good life since. It is UNLIKELY your application would be successful, though. You'd need to apply to your local Lodge and tell them all the circumstances. It's then up to them to decide if you qualify, or if your conviction is of such a magnitude that your application cannot go proceed.
I've seen people with charges in their past, be balloted in. I've also seen people, soon to be released, try to petition. We would like to see them pull their life together and maintain for some years. We usually discourage them from petitioning so they don't go on record as having been rejected. That person needs Jesus more than they need us.
@@gaiuspompeius1 You do not need to be a practicing member of your faith or indeed even be a member of an organised religion. As long as you believe in a higher power that created the universe, you may apply to join.

You should ask your church leadership, not freemasons. For example, Catholics are prohibited from becoming freemssons, although it seems that many do not know this. And I doubt the freemasons would tell you.

If you know where your local lodge is ask, call, email. Ask your neighbor. You can Google your state's grand Lodge. That page will most likely help you find your closest lodge or one of your choosing. Contact them. Ask for a petition. You give them info. They contact you. You interview. They present your petition at the next lodge meeting. The lodge votes. If you are unanimously elected. They contact you. You can certainly ask them any questions at your interview. Some lodges have dinner before they open Lodge. You'll probably be invited. You can stay for dinner but not sit in lodge. They will try and find out when you're available to do an initiation. I've never seen one that's demeaning or embarrassing. There you go.
