I once asked my mother to buy me some makeup brushes on sale and told her “if we buy them now we save 50%” and she replied “and if I never buy them I’ll save 100” 🤣🤣 it was the best advice, I don’t fall into consumerism as much as other people💜
To add to your tip of keeping library ebooks longer: put your Kindle in airplane mode. As long as it is in airplane mode the book won’t disappear, even if you X out of it!
Once I became an adult and had to pay for all of my own stuff I was having a really hard time finding balance between getting some fun things and getting necessities (especially with clothes/makeup). So now my clothing rule is if I can't think of three different outfits to wear with the item from what I have already then I won't buy it. It has really helped me buy less but also not feel guilty for getting something new. I want to be good about my budget but not give up every fun thing I enjoy so finding a balance is nice.
That's so smart, like you're building a wardrobe capsule slowly , good luck with finding the balance of spending & loving what you need & having fun owning some pretty things 💜💜
Clothes is a big one. I got so sick of sorting through clothes. There’s seven days in a week and I clean every week. Why do I need 20 pants?! 20 sweaters?! I’ve gotten so much better at not buying clothes I don’t need.
Good idea! I'm more of a- if I don't absolutely LOVE it as soon as I put it on I won't buy it! Unless it's something I wear most days like black leggings. I literally own like 20 pairs of black leggings 🤦 my excuse is I don't have a washer & dryer at my apartment so I don't do laundry as often as I'd like to. And my fat ass wears black leggings daily after gaining 45 pounds that's all I feel comfortable in. 😔 September can't come fast enough! I'll be getting the Gastric Sleeve surgery done!!! I'm so excited!
I’m definitely going to remember that. It’s amazing how sales can suck you in... “Well I don’t really NEED it, but it’s such a good sale.” I also tell myself “You might be saving $30 but you’re spending $50.” 🤦🏻♀️
The different version I have of this is not buying as many times. List what I want and wait until I have enough to save on the shipping 😅 although, if I came to a site for one thing, I'll either buy it with shipping, or see the shipping and say no way until I have enough things from that brand to purchase 😅😂 basically, they always have to be things I've been wanting!
Do a cleaning supplies video! I'm in the exact opposite point where I only have a few things and I'm not sure if I have the right combination, but I don't want to go out and spend money on more if it'll end up wrong. Since you already got a load and now have seen what's useful, that would be so helpful to learn about!
Tyler's "bean rampage" had me cackling out loud! Men are so funny. When this whole pandemic hit my husband ran to Costco and stocked up on Pillsbury crescent rolls! We had NEVER purchased those in our entire marriage (10 years!), but he bought 8 cans!🤣🤷♀️
I have been a long viewer and I just have to say that I have been LOVING all your videos this year. Thank you for all your amazing content! I love your channel!!!
I'm no minimalist by any means, but I have cut back in 2020 a lot of my stuff, and donated it to a thrift store. I made a lot of changes in my life this year, and so you could say out with the old and in with the new. I also used to buy a lot of makeup every month. Since April I've only bought 1 bronzer and 2 highlighters.
I just love that Tyler pops in and out of this video. For whatever reason it gives a big sense of just being a guest and you giving suggestions friend to friend. ♥️
I can’t give up a physical book! I have a kindle and they’re great for reading at night when you don’t want to turn a light on. But I just love holding books and opening them up.
Same I also love knowing I can hold a book at odd angles to read it. I have dropped my phone on my face one too many times lol can't imagine dropping a tablet or iPad.
Yes! I do that all the time with clothes. I'll think to my self "oh that's so cute and fun and different!" But usually that's my brain's code for "I'm never actually going to wear it." Getting unique/out of my comfort zone pieces can be nice, but not if I'll never take off the tags!
I need to stop buying makeup for my fantasy self. In terms of clothes I have reached the point in which I know I'm only going to wear graphic tees, jeans and sneakers. Sometimes I caught myself trying to look like my stylish friends
I love the idea of not shopping for your fantasy self. I think it’s something everyone gets sucked into and having a pause button to ask “is this really me?” is brilliant on a lot of levels. Makes you be honest with yourself and save some money.
I keep a running list of items I want to purchase on my phone. I am on a low buy, so clearly I cannot purchase all these new releases. I realized that new releases go on sale about 6-9 months after their release to make room for new releases. So, if the item is already on my phone, I will purchase it if I still want it. Many times, I don’t even want it anymore. The magic wore off.
Yes! I do this too. More often than not, the excitement wears off. And yeah! Makeup never used to go on sale the way it does now. I will never purchase something full price these days because now you can always snag a sale.
@@sarahg4091 I completely agree, I keep the same kind of list on my phone too 😁 and I will also wait for sale to restock certain items that run out. Like my Fenty lipgloss ran out some time ago...but I'm waiting until I see it on sale before I repurchase. In the meantime I'm just using a $3 NYX buttergloss (we're all wearing masks now anyway 🤷)
I started doing this, too. If I like something I’ll add it to my Amazon wish list. There have been many times where I’ve gone through my wish list and wondered what the heck was I thinking when I added it. And if there’s an item I still want, I’ll purchase it.
@@sarahg4091 here in Germany we have a website that offers regularly 30% off deals. So if I truly want something I will wait and never spend the original price
I am totally with you on not buying sale items.... my husband used to say to me, "You need to stop saving us money!" I will only buy sale items if it is something I need to repurchase or replace a product. We love Costco, but are very strict on what we buy.... mainly nuts, paper towels and toilet paper, dog food, canned and frozen foods that we eat a lot of! Loving the VLOGS!
I have made it a point to buy more of my daughter’s (3 years old) clothing at local thrift stores. It does save so much money and it’s putting money into local small businesses which I appreciate. Her clothes generally only get a few months of wear and I can’t bring myself to spend huge money on them. Shoes however, I always buy new. She’s tough on them and if they have been used already they just don’t get used enough from her.
Yess I have 3 kids expecting my 4th and have been thrifting since the first! Wouldn't do it any other way! I do thrift shoes if they are a good price and the condition is still good!
Im all about 2nd hand. And I tell my friends, dont worry about stains, those clothes wind up being play clothes. Sometimes ill buy new if there's a really good sale. I found a lady who gets pallets of clothes and she does a huge sale twice a month and Sunday is dollar day! It's saved me so so much! Literally EVERYTHING is a dollar.
I think it is very important for influencers like you to bring this idea to attention ❤ I myself have been on a more minimalist path for the last year and my life has changed so much, for the better. Tbh I have unfollowed the majority of "beauty influencers" because there is a constant pressure to buy more and more stuff, and that is all some of them talk about. But I am still subscribed to your channel because the way your videos come across is very rarely like "you all neeed this!" You always seem honest, down to earth and acknowledge that us "normal people" can't just go buy every new product/clothes etc out there.
Test this: Sit in the wingback chair anywhere and it’ll look awesome on camera. Of course this might be me projecting wanting a wingback chair as our extra seating we really need in our living room.
My age is showing here...when I grew up, I had 5 dresses to wear to school every week.....I had to change into play clothes as soon as I got home....we got new clothes for the beginning of school and that was it. I now have 2 grandchildren and I’m soooooooo guilty of buying them so many clothes....it’s a total waste.
I love what you said about not buying things because they are on sale, and not buying clothes you don't love. I have an entire walk-in closet in my guest room full of "great deals" that I don't wear. I made the rule that I had to get rid of something if I bought something. I'm going to add your rules to that!
Thank you for helping me recognize my "fantasy self"! I didn't know I was making purchasing/hoarding decisions based on "her". After hearing you discuss the concept in your previous video, I now consciously consider if my potential purchase is practical or not.
This was actually really helpful! I like hearing other influencers trying to be smarter with their purchases/what they spend time on/what’s important etc. More videos like this please!!
I try to nicely explain this to new parents, like yeah buy a cute outfit occasionally but for the most part buy cost effective outfits and shoes. My kids are 8 and 11 and I still have to buy new clothes every few months.
I agree. We either buy secondhand or a few (FEW) quality pieces that are ethically made. These pieces can either go to another family or be saved for the next kid if there is one.
For the ebooks from the library, my mom found that turning off the wifi to her kindle allows her to keep the book until she's completely done. For her, it works but I know not everyone can do that.
One thing I've been doing lately about buying stuff that are on clearance or on sale is I look at the item n ask myself "do I really love it or love its price? Would I pay full price for it?" If I'm not willing to pay full price for something then I don't really love it and I have saved a ton doing that! 💗💗
With clothes, I like to walk around a store with them. Since I've started trying not to spend as much money, I like to pick between a few and that time of walking around gives me a chance to change my mind on some of the clothing.
Writerandreader I realized later you meant walk around with them in the cart, but at first I was picturing you walking around like Target pushing a cart wearing a dress with the tags on 😂
My husband and I were on a trip and listening to a podcast on finance. The phrase "I can't afford to save that much money." rang so true about passing on sale items that you don't need.
Loved how you left in the "real life" moments. Makes your videos feel so much more authentic and different from other UA-camrs. (No shade just really enjoy you and your style)
You really make me want to rock my natural hair color. Your hair always looks so healthy and beautiful. Do you have a video sharing your routine and/ or products you use regularly?
Growing up, my mom always used to buy in bulk or the bigger size bottle for our family of 5. When I first moved out on my own, I had it ingrained in my brain that the bigger was the better deal. But I learned that all I need is the small! Seriously saves me so much money!
I agree with so much. I’ve also realized I need to stop buying “trendy” items just because they’re trendy, I really want to love what I buy and also buy something I can love for a longer time, and make it something of better quality.
LOL: "the end of our collection"...of Beans! 🤣 Jess, all I could think of was you finally hitting pan on something, but this time it was beans. 😁 Ok, I'm a dork.
Jess - I've been watching your videos for a couple months and I absolutely love them. You're such a real person and so relatable; I watch your videos while I'm getting ready in the morning and it makes me feel like I'm listening to a friend on the phone. You're beautiful, hilarious, and you've got some great advice. I like how self aware you are and willing to laugh at yourself. I learn a lot from watching your channel. Thanks for making great content and keep being you!
Thank you Jessica... you’ve helped me cut down a lot on buying so many things. I haven’t bought any useless make up or clothes for a year or two. It does matter very much when I can spend that money in something useful.
My husband and I switched from shopping every week to every other week recently because of covid. We call the second week our "chopped" week where we use up everything in our fridge in creative ways. It's been really fun and I've noticed less food waste!
Just found your channel and I’m in love. I actually really appreciate how much you “over explain” things. It’s so similar to how my brain works. And it’s exactly the way my boyfriend talks so it’s actually so soothing to listen to your longer videos.
I'm finding that shopping online has been saving me money versus in store. In a store I'm more tempted to by what I see but online I'm only buying what I need. I've also recently realized that my fantasy self likes summer dresses and I buy them thinking I'll wear them but I never do. I made a promise to myself that if I ever started wearing the dresses I have, I can buy another one. Otherwise it's a waste of money.
Anyone else love that Jessica's filming in her living room?! And she should see how many different rooms/areas she can film in? A GRWM on her deck with coffee would be awesome!
Cute tip for library books on the kindle! What I normally do if I'm not done at the end of the loan period is just turn my "airplane mode" on before the end and then even if you have multiple books you can still read them because the books don't sync.
This was a great video Jessica. I completely agree about the ‘fantasy self’ idea. I am trying to be more aware of the clothes I actually wear and not buy things because I like the look of them on others but they’re not ‘me’. Also, deciding whether to buy something or not based on whether I need it rather than because it’s on sale.
Love the change of background and you talking to Tyler and not editing it out :) Your home is beautiful and cozy feeling. The fantasy self video is probably my favorite of yours because I've already been decluttering a lot, but it really changed my mindset even more. Really enjoyed this video too and love how you stated its not all black and white. Thank you for all of the lifestyle content even more because they tend to be my favorites of yours :)
Naked Beasts sells INCREDIBLE “healthy” candles!! They’re small, but they last just as long as Bath and Body Works candles (or at least in my opinion. I love knowing they are safe for my pets and for me to breath in!! Highly recommend
I can relate to the cleaning supplies one! Under the sink there's kitchen supplies ( dish soap etc) but also there and in the laundry is this plethora of cleaning supplies and we only use a few! I did a massive declutter of the cupboard under the sink. Old kitchen wares, expired cleaning supplies etc. It's nice to have a bit of order there 🤣
I used to do the wall plugins too! But now when the glass plug-ins are empty I pop off the tops and fill it with an essential oil & water mix. Way healthier and way less spendy. 😊
When you were talking about clothes, I immediately thought of that green top you were complaining about recently. I try to make myself look at anything on sale and ask myself if I would buy it full price. If not, pass
I learned the hard way how to declutter. Moved twice in 5 years & was forced to become a minimalist. Although I still have clothes & shoes in boxes I can bring myself to throw away. New rule - If I didn't use it in a year, it's outta here.
Nothing you said was weird at all! You were spot on! I have been guilty of all of them myself, except for buying clothes, I am so boring in that respect, when I find something that fits and is my style, I'll buy a bunch of them cause I know I'll be wearing them for years
Jessica, I have a way to save money if you buy wholesale, get rid of artificial smells-buy a diffuser (or 2 or 3 😁) and use 100% pure essential oils in the diffuser. It only takes a few drops and purified water. I hear you about all the cleaners! I use an essential oil based cleanser-OnGuard cleanser. It takes a small amount with water and a spray bottle-bam! No more chemical cleansers. I can share more healthy choices: Clothes soap Dryer balls Foaming hand wash Etc. I’m not at all trying to force anyone to buy anything, of course. I hate that too. I just wanted to share some options for things you want to replace and have bad chemicals. 😊 God bless. 🤗
Also a tip for the kindle: load up from the library (mine lets me check out 24 at a time, but I usually do about 10). Download them all, then put it in airplane mode until you read them all. The library can’t call it back until you reconnect to WiFi! I do this on the kindle I keep at the gym. I can only read in 30 minute increments so it takes me a while to get through them all, but it’s an easy way to extend their loan period!
I only shop online for clothes now bc you can get more discounts. I keep the items in my cart for about a week or more before I decide to purchase. Most of the time I change my mind when I come back to them. This helps me so much because I only buy them if I like it enough to not change my mind.
Stasher reusable bags are super great for freezing!! Expensive but you buy one or two a month and before you know it, you have a good collection with some you can spare for freezing!!

Please don’t ever keep your videos short ☺️ we only get to spend time with you a few times a week and we savor EVERY minute! ❤️
"Please don't take my candles..." Same, girl!!! 🙋♀️
Growing up, my mom always used to buy in bulk or the bigger size bottle for our family of 5. When I first moved out on my own, I had it ingrained in my brain that the bigger was the better deal. But I learned that all I need is the small! Seriously saves me so much money!
I love when teacher Jess comes out!
The fantasy self thing is so true! I never put it into words, but I do exactly that!
Thank you Jessica... you’ve helped me cut down a lot on buying so many things. I haven’t bought any useless make up or clothes for a year or two. It does matter very much when I can spend that money in something useful.
I'm all about having a physical book. My kindle just doesn't do it for me. I will read on it occasionally, but nothing beats a real book in hand.
Yes!!!
Do you use the free library boxes? Love them for when I’m craving a physical book
@@csternickle I've never used one. We have a great used books store here that I always go to. :)
cinnamon hensel you can find them on littlefreelibrary.org/ You can add your old books to them as well. My students walk to use them all the time
I agree! I get enough sceen time in a day... want to look at a physical book, feel it, smell it LOL
My husband and I switched from shopping every week to every other week recently because of covid. We call the second week our "chopped" week where we use up everything in our fridge in creative ways. It's been really fun and I've noticed less food waste!
haah! Your fantasy self items! Yes. I loved everything on your list! I am right along with you on all of these!!
That color is major beautiful on you!! You are glowing!
This background is everything!! It’s so soothing and pretty haha 😍
Just found your channel and I’m in love. I actually really appreciate how much you “over explain” things. It’s so similar to how my brain works. And it’s exactly the way my boyfriend talks so it’s actually so soothing to listen to your longer videos.
You literally whispering into the camera so Tyler didn’t hear you talking about his fantasy self 🤣🤣🤣
I love listening to you talk about the pretty much anything, such a blessing when you post 🥰
Totally agree on clothes!! If I’m not excited to wear it the very next day, I don’t need it. Such a mind shift.
THE GLAMOUR omg! You hair and outfit look fab!
Anyone else love that Jessica's filming in her living room?! And she should see how many different rooms/areas she can film in? A GRWM on her deck with coffee would be awesome!
The lighting and colours of this video are amazing!! Plus your makeup look and camisole, love 💕💕
Cute tip for library books on the kindle! What I normally do if I'm not done at the end of the loan period is just turn my "airplane mode" on before the end and then even if you have multiple books you can still read them because the books don't sync.
The top looks so gorgeous on you! ❤️
Ok, genuinely laughed when you said you were near the end of your “bean collection”. 😂
Thanks for sharing the rec! I will look into them.
Yes, me too! Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for the recommendation!!
I use those Pet house wax melts from Amazon. They are specifically made to be safe for pets. I love them!
Small investment but stasher bags! Freezer, dishwasher safe if you were worried about raw meat or anything, only have 2 smaller ones but love them
That shirt is so cute! The whole aesthetic going on in this video is nice 😁
I LOVE this setup!!!
Magazines were the first thing I cut out YEARS ago when I was trying to save money
It's nice to have a bit of order there 🤣
“#2 wall plugins” as i look over because i LITERALLY just bought my first one yesterday 😂😂
Same! I bought like 3 the other day for the first ever! 😂😂😂
No wonder hubby keeps popping in! Ditto about the red and gold. The lipstick color is great, too.
My "fantasy self" likes to buy shoes for special occasions that never occur.
That deep red and gold, especially with your hair color and skintone is just 10/10.
So gorgeous!!!❤✨
Btw, I love this background for your video. Looks nice. ☺
Smash that like button! 🤣 You’re the best, Jess!
Nothing you said was weird at all! You were spot on! I have been guilty of all of them myself, except for buying clothes, I am so boring in that respect, when I find something that fits and is my style, I'll buy a bunch of them cause I know I'll be wearing them for years
sale items always haunt me 😂 i am so tempted to buy them solely for the purpose that they’re on sale 🙃
I can share more healthy choices:
Clothes soap
Dryer balls
Foaming hand wash
Etc.
I’m not at all trying to force anyone to buy anything, of course. I hate that too. I just wanted to share some options for things you want to replace and have bad chemicals. 😊
God bless. 🤗
Why do I laugh every time Jessica says “clarence” instead of “clearance...” 😅
Also a tip for the kindle: load up from the library (mine lets me check out 24 at a time, but I usually do about 10). Download them all, then put it in airplane mode until you read them all. The library can’t call it back until you reconnect to WiFi! I do this on the kindle I keep at the gym. I can only read in 30 minute increments so it takes me a while to get through them all, but it’s an easy way to extend their loan period!
' When you said Magazines and Books. I stopped breathing. That will be my last thing to give up.
Magazines, maybe. Books? Never! I’ve formed a bond with those babies
Lol me too...I treasure my bookshelf 💙
Lol same - I need my books! Reading on screens gives me headaches.
Never giving up books. I keep a banned library and copies of novels I suspect will one day get memoryholed.
Have you looked into essential oils and diffusers? I love Edens Garden!
I totally agree with the sale items part, overall I am trying to cut back on buying so many unnecessary items
Love love love your videos but I will tell you I couldn’t keep my eyes off of that lampshade tilted just a bit. 😂😂😂
Now that you pointed it out.😣😂😂
Now I can’t unsee it!
I only shop online for clothes now bc you can get more discounts. I keep the items in my cart for about a week or more before I decide to purchase. Most of the time I change my mind when I come back to them. This helps me so much because I only buy them if I like it enough to not change my mind.
I don't think I can get rid of my magazines. I love having the real thing, don't like to read them online.
Stasher reusable bags are super great for freezing!! Expensive but you buy one or two a month and before you know it, you have a good collection with some you can spare for freezing!!
"SMASH that like button!" 😂😂😂
