Yes. I love EMGs from 2013. 10years of my carrier as a guitar player. My first set was 81/60. But i always wanted 57/66. I just got it yesterday and i'm very impressed with the dynamic and the clarity. Super quiet on a high gain settings
Lol. They aren't, though. 1 trick pony vs. pretty much the most versatile option on the market that doesn't need a special mod to be dynamic.
I have both - the 57/66 in hellraiser and the 81/85 in an LTD EC1000 - and I must say I cannot choose between the two, they have different uses. The 57/66 has a more natural sound, it goes really well with clean and crunch tones. It also provides a great solo tone. The 81/85 is a staple of metal tone and is cemented as one of the most defined and brutal metal tones ever.
That said, the 57/66 is definitely more usable in more kinds of music than the 81/85.
i like the 57/66 more. Have them in one of my Schecter Guitars. Absolutely amazing pickups!

60 any good in the neck slot? How’s the clean tones on the EMG 81 60? You have any guitars or played some with the 81 60 set? I have played a ESP at my local guitar center that has the 81 60 EMG pickups set. Didn’t do clean tone I just played a 90s rock song on the 81 pickup. I love the 81. I’m just asking if the 60 is any good for cleans and is it good in the neck slot
The 60 is ok, but if I had a choice I'd pick the 85 in the neck...to bad most cime with a 60 but its an easy swap woth the wiring emg uses

Just bought my 57/66 set I’m Chrome
This was probably the best video comparing these that I've seen. Tonal differences well displayed by excellent playing.

I have the 57/66 set here on the table, waiting to get installed in my Ibanez SZ520FM. What a killer tone from both sets, however I like the 57/66 set a bit more due to the low gain phrases. Awesome playing dude!

As a metal musician the 81/85 set is tried and true. Awesome metal pickup. BUT.....
The 57/66 sounds like a passive pickup. Tons of headroom and authentic punch. Reminds me of a SD-JB/Jazz set.

I agree 100% with you when you say the 81/85 is a tried and true classic pickup set. But I’m liking the 57/66 set a lot more. They sound more like passives. The sound is fuller and more present, more dynamic, if that makes sense. They’re sloppier, which is a good thing. The 81/85 set is so precise that they’re almost sterile sounding by comparison.
@@leroyjenkins4811 nope, you're right. I actually play/write metal for the most part and have an Agile 7 with the 81/85 set in it. I'm putting the guitar up for sale/trade because I really don't like the just full blown, almost one-sided sound they produce. If I do ever decide to go active again on any of my guitars it'll be with Fishman for sure.
Even though they're active pups, they still have this very natural sound about them. They still produce tons of power but they also have great headroom and string separation. 👍

Very tasteful playing. In most cases the 57/66 sounded better in the mix to my ears.

Just got an 81 in one of my guitars. I was always a passive pickup guy and my go-to sound is a SD JB or within that territory. Invaders and the Kiesel SD22 are also favourites as well as DiMarzio Tone Zone. My 2 cents on the EMG: The pickup is super clean, very articulate and on high definition. Note separations is remarkable to say the least. Pick attack is superb and clean. So, how does this make it sound wise? Well, if you are used to play "fat" sounding pickups, the EMG might sound a bit thin and "underwhelming". If you are new to active pickups, (as I was) , and expect a "wall of distortion", like some sort of boost pedal...well, ..no. On a semi-clean amp it will definitely distort more, but on a high gain setting, the 81 for me has almost a reverse effect. Its compressed and tight, clean and articulate and that makes it sound "less distorted", less gainy...My 2 cents :)

I really wanted to try and like a pair of active buckers, so I got the 85 81 set and put it in my Explorer build. I'm not stocked. I mean, they sound good, but not better then my passive Dimarzio's. Different tastes for different people, I guess.
