  • Hey everyone and welcome to my South Shore Line in train video!!! This video is going to cover the aspects of the route between Chicago, IL and Portage, IN. The trip was 1 hour and 15min. We will be riding aboard the iconic single level EMUs that are seen on most South Shore trains!!!
The South Shore Line, as mentioned in the video, is owned by NICTD. It is a state owned company that runs specifically for Northern Indiana. The SSL is a bi-state commuter rail system that runs across Northwest Indiana to Chicago. More info can be found in the link below:
    www.mysouthshoreline.com/abou...
The SSL has a large fleet of rail cars that are built by Nippon Sharyo. They even have double decker EMUs which are also built by Nippon Sharyo sometime in the early 2000s which are the same models as the ones that the Metra Electric have. Here’s more information about the single level EMUs:
    www.n-sharyo.co.jp/business/t...
    www.jorsa.or.jp/en/exports/de...
Here is some more information about the future West Lake Corridor. This is a project that will link Dyer, IN to Chicago, IL via Hammond, IN:

The North Shore Line was always the speed champion of the 3 Interurbans and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin in 2 nd place also running their trains at really high speeds between stations.

I for one would love to see some Stadler trains on the SSL some day. It'd make the line feel sort of like an interurban again.
Meanwhile, for all of you in the DMV, did you notice the car bodies on the Nippon Sharyos? They're the same design as the MARC II coaches that have made up MARC trains since the mid-80s and still run today AFAIK.

@brianhenderson91: I think the car bodies are like the SEPTA REGIONAL ELECTRIC RAILROADS CARS GE IVs in Philadelphia.

    Thanks for this video !
I drive for Uber and Lyft and always on the South Side and taking people to the Hegewisch, Hammond, and Gary South Shore Stations. I have not been on a train since the IC trains back in the 70's when I was a kid with my mom. Been wanting to take a ride on the South Shore one day just to get out and do something different. Now I know what to do and buying a ticket so I don't look so lost and confused.
And a big thanks about the Info on the new line the "West Lake Corridor". They are building it really fast. I always drive in Hammond and see them working on it.
I never knew what the name would be and couldn't find much information on it till I seen your video> I kept searching for South Shore Extension" or "New South Shore Line" and couldn't find anything. West Lake Corridor ! Now I finally have the map of what it will be and how far it will go in Indiana.
Thanks for this great video !

23:50 Those GTO inverters sound like certain Osaka-area EMUs. It makes sense though.

The North Shore Line and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin ran their trains at much higher speeds than the South Shore Line. The North Shore Line ran up to 90 miles an hour north of Waukegan and 70 miles an hour south of Waukegan. The Chicago Aurora and Elgin also ran at speeds 70 miles an hour even between stations. The North Shore Line was always the speed champion of all the Interurban Lines. Sadly there was no transit agencies back in the 50s and 60s to save these 2 lines that could have had a future potential today had they been saved.

I monitor the speed while riding the SSL and it’s not uncommon to reach the trains’ max speed of 79MPH throughout the trip, while slowing down around the stations in Gary and Hammond because of all the crossings

    • @albertcarello619
      @albertcarello619 2 місяці тому

@@MrProzaq The North Shore Line and the Chicago Aurora and Elgin very frequently ran at speeds even higher out in the open country with numerous street grade crossings blasting their air horns and whistles. Running on the L did limit their speeds though.

I've noticed that there's an awful lot of land with no tracks. Wonder if this was the original IC Mainline as well as the IC Electric District.

If the North Shore Line survived with funding available it's cars would look and sound the same as these cars.

Mate, last time I was on that train(back to Michigan City when working out of Kalamazoo) was 2006 and it looks like that train hasn’t been maintained or cleaned since then. I’ve heard the US financial situation is bad but couldn’t a little bit of work to keep this running stock in decent condition be done????? Good luck with your projects. Grüße aus Australien. Tschüss.

1:22 the construction is because they are removing the street running part and double tracking it.
