To this day, the power fist sergeant is in my opinion, the best space marine ever sculpted
That whammer of a powerfist is just epic.
Those turned out amazing. Your "paint by numbers" assessment of how Space Marines are usually painted I think can be applied to basically anything GW-related, especially if you only watch their videos and buy their products. We need more videos like this to show that getting a little artsy and learning some basic color theory can really elevate one's hobby. This is a legitimate form of art and GW approaches it more like a scientific formula.
not me exclusively priming in black because I hate detailing:
I have these Sternguard, I have to agree with you, they are some of my favourite space marines ever made and I'm not sure that will ever change. Love the videos, keep up the good work :)
The old veteran models were amazing
I also have these veterans, they're probably the best minis out there
You know, seeing oldhammer art next to the new stuff surprised me. They actually work well together.
I read "Retro Marines" and I instantly think of bases with drybrushed sand and trims in Goblin Green 😅. Jay, this is an amazing paintjob and I'd agree that these are your best marines so far - this red/purple blend thing is just next level and the lenses are superb.
They look really cool Jay, the base coat really added a lot of interest and saturation that otherwise would have been lacking. I recently found that purple ink works really well for shading nmm bronze, if you glaze yellow ink over it, it starts to look more reddy brown but the slight blue hue creates an extra level of depth that really adds to the effect. Experimental painting is where growth happens :) great job as always guys.
Oh man I still have these, I remember painting them up for a school project.
Not only do I agree that that old metal, Sternguard kit is one of the best set of sculpts EVER, but it was really enjoyable to watch you work through your inventive process. Well done!
I had those, many years ago... but they are not the OG, old school.
I remember buying the Rogue Trader rules along with the first giant plastic set of marines, all Corvus pattern helmets, studded shoulders... that’s proper old! Heck, I even had a metal power armoured human miniature hefting a shuriken catapult. Wouldn’t find that sort of xenos armament these days!
Indeed. These were one of the last box sets I bought before I stopped collecting.
My marine army had 1988 beakies included as my other veteran squad.
These look great... somehow they remind me a lot of "The Death of Hope" fanfilm. The red cast gives it a look as if it's sunrise/set or the battlefield is awashed in flames.
I enjoy the history of the space marines. Lately I been finding older sculpts on ebay and the sort. And I honestly been loving the experience, adding character to your army with a little variety is always fun. Little treasures that tell there own story.
Love the bases, for mine I want to put cork on the bottom and build from there.
The Buy Painted reference made me check- the dude's last video was 6 years ago! Unsurprisingly, his painting still holds up with what's being done now.
Love your videos - you are my fav mini painting channel by a country mile
We do need an updated tactical marine kit to be true scale
Mark VI Horus heresy models
Dirty truescaler
Awesome paint job, as always. I have the metal Sternguard and Vanguard Vets, great models. I added them into my BT army as well!
These have got to be some of the best paint jobs I have seen from you. Awesome job
I need a techno song that’s just looping “dark blue, blue, light blue” for 20 minutes
These are probably the best ultra marines I’ve ever seen ,well done jay!
These look great, really distinctive and atmospheric. Plus, it seems a method that lends itself to speed painting.
Your quick photoshop demo made this style of painting finally click for me. That lil quick bit you showed somehow made sense to me, thanks
You’ve a great attitude towards the hobby! Thanks for the video.
Really cool paint job, never seen it done like this before, Results are awesome!
I really, really like how these turned out. Great job!
This video makes me so happy.
My sister (a very talented art school graduate) taught me color theory when I was getting back into miniatures in 2020. Learning to paint well was my competitive escape from the chef world where the stress of that was eating me alive… I found it very relaxing to be practicing these new skills like nmm glazing and osl. They were hard and my good minis turned to sucky minis but then they started to get good again, but I was getting stressed from painting. So I started painting in the same “painterly” style in this video, and started having a blast again.
the minis are good but not where I always wanted them to be as compared to like the heavy metal guys and golden demon dudes
Seeing this video makes me happy because now I know that this style can lead to breath taking results if I just keep practicing it! Thank you!
SPONSORSHIP YAAAAAAAAY! Congratulations!
I love the A.demidov style so much, and this reminds me of his work. You nailed these, beautiful job. You legend, you make three videos a week and stream every night, and paint epic mini's. And always more to say c:
Wow, what a level up. These are the most interesting Ultramarines I've seen in a looooong time
I think they look brilliant 😉 old school hot rods used to use a red primer before painting blue to good call
"Warhammers are a group very receptive to change" that line aged like fine wine 😂
I gotta say, I’d love to see a more in depth guide of how you handled these. They look amazing! Love the loose style.
A cool black templars color combo for the paint style you just did could be a reddish-brown undercoat, black basecoat, and blue-grey highlights. Could give it a rusty look
Man, these came out so good. I love the red undercoat, want to try something similar with some Salamanders. Great stuff!
Those are nice. Love the quick way you did the metals 🤘🏼
These are definitely a core aspect of my mini hobby and what I most associate with 40k thanks to when I started. The paint job came out great, theres a lot of energy to it that almost makes them look glowing.
they look so much better after repaint... very well done !
GOD DAMN THESE LOOK MAGICAL
I have LITERALLY NEVER SEEN ultras this GOOD
Jay: Firstborn are coming to an end
Horus Heresy: Allow me to introduce myself.
I use a magenta ink shadow with a mixture of talassar blue and aethermatic blue contrast for the blue of the armour so it’s transparent enough for my undercoats to show through I didn’t even think of making a glaze through the airbrush incredible job
I'm the other way around with my armies where I started with space marines and now I've got a small necron army growing
As a kid my favourite were the vanguard veterans. That was the first time I grew a pair and highlighted, wish I still had them, might have to get em again, You've left me feeling inspired bro
‘Expanding the crusade’ was what the Thunder warriors were told as well
I never would have guessed it was an old metal model in the thumbnail. A good paintjob can really make them hit different.
This red base looks absolutely amazing! I think I'll try something like this for the space marines in my Ultimate starter. I've just gotten back into 40k and painting after having done other stuff for 20 years. It a very exciting time for me :D
Your metal Ulras look fantastic. Those were some clever ideas and I'll have make a note of them.
"Nothing is over! Nothing! You just dont turn it off!"
Wonderful paint job on gorgeous sculpts.
These are great, you nailed it!
They look awesome! Well done. And I agree with ya, the new models are opportunities, not setbacks.
Those lens look fantastic
Excellent video; thank you!
Those Sternguard veteran models are among the best GW produced, compared to other Marine models, they had produced up to then. Like the paint job. I wish I could do that as I want to paint my models and use them as the missing 2nd and 11th Legions. I am working on their Lore, and can only hope it will approach the depth of the 18 known Legions. Keep up the great work, Jay.
Just noticed you covered the lamp with a translucent paper. Will steal!
Damn those are nice man! Really loving the red underpaint and makes the Smurfs a lot more interesting
That's actually a great way to view the Primaris Marines.....the only gripe I have with Primaris is that GW will take absolutely ffoooorrrreeeevvveeeerrrrrrr to update some of the older Classics to being True-Scale....and by Classics I mean Terminators, Dreadnoughts, Devastators and Assault Marines.
Although I have had an absolute BLAST converting Primaris Marines into having Firstborn Weapons(I converted a Primaris Eliminator into having a Power Axe and Plasma Pistol from my Devastator Kit), although looking on the brightside(and ignoring the price tags lol) it's just more reasons for me to Kitbash and go truly WILD with my SpaceMarines. I am genuinely excited for when I can get my hands on a bunch of different Horus Heresy Kits, Terminator Kits, Assault Marine Kits, Devastator Kits and Primaris Kits because then I can Kitbash a bunch of SpaceMarines. I'm thinking I might go with a mix of Firstborn and Primaris Marines in most of my Squads, to represent how much my Homebrew Legion has embraced Primaris Marines. Perhaps I'll even incorporate their Homebrew Lore to be that they are so trusted by the Mechanicus that Belisarius Cawl let them have early access to some Primaris SpaceMarines.
If you're curious about my Homebrew Legion, their Lore is very much a WIP and I change it regularly whenever I feel inspired and have a "EUREKA!" moment. Part of why I went with a Homebrew Legion instead of a Homebrew Chapter was so I could have some Lore&logic backing up why they have a mix of lots of rare/exotic 30k Wargear in the Grimdark Grimdarkness of the 42nd Millenium. I love how cool and epic the awesome, regal&ornate 30k Wargear is but all Grimdarkified in the Grimdarkness of the 42nd Millenium, just seeing so much Tech from such a hopeful and unique Era as the Great Crusade being used alongside the Wargear that survived the stagnation of the Imperium into the 42nd Millenium is just so cool to me, seeing remnants of the far more practical and logical 30k Imperium being used in the 40k Imperium is really fascinating to me(for example, small groups and factions within the Imperium still using Combined Arms Warfare as much as possible like having hordes of Skitarii, Tanks ,Legio Cybernetica, Astartes, Knights and Titans all fighting together and being so much more efficient than the massive horde of several million Guardsmen Infantry with pitiful coordination with their Artillery,Air Support and Tanks is just so cool. It's like seeing 2 different Civilizations that are on different levels of advancement fighting alongside eachother, kinda like those moments in Halo where the U.N.S.C. and Ex-Covenant Forces teamed up to fight the Covenant and stop the Halo Rings from being Fired.)
Contrast undershade is amazing. I first tried it on the critters in the OG WarCry box and they ended up being the best painted out of the box, to the point when I play WC, people fawn over them and not the *actual* dudes. lol
Jay finally cracked the secret to get me to watch an ad segment, nerdy coffee.
I'm kinda stuck in the mindset of paint by numbers and neatness, just goes to show you can get amazing results just letting go of shooting for perfection, they look so cool!
Ay very cool! Two hobbies coming together, minis and coffee!
EOB: "Space marines as we know them are over..."
10th edition: "Are you sure about that?"
You were by my side all along. My one true mentor, my guiding mark 7 marines.
Great video. Makes me want to buy some old space marines... Having discovered the hobby with AoS and only getting into 40K with 8th ed I've never had anything but Primaris.
Brown with judociously stippled gold looks really good, I'm gonna have to try gray and silver...
This video is major inspo.... I'm about to paint a bunch of ynnari... this paint job upside-down might be it!!
That would be such a cool way to paint black armor. I might have to try something similar for my Iron Hands. Without an airbrush, thinking white primer, violet basecoat or even contrast, metal drybrush/pseudo-zenithal, watery dark coldgrey for the highlights?
These models are so cool. I'm repainting the sergeant right now for my Iron Hands. They never get old and look so much better than the sternguard models that came out later (the plastic ones). 🥰
I love the thinking with the red base, if I'm not mistaking, you could have gone yellow, you would have some greenish shadows/reflections, which could compliment very well a green base, like the light reflecting on the grass or anything else in the same vibe, but man you killed it
Fantastic video thankyou jay
Mad respect for the buy painted reference
I love your work.
Man. They look great. I always find it riveting the way you explore your capabilities and try out different styles.
Do you ever paint canvas instead of models?
That is a really nice looking squad ✨
Once again you've done some older models proud.
_Fucking Legendary!_
I just picked up 12 of these metal marine’s, plus metal Kantor and a customised land raider for them all to travel in. All for Kill Team 2.0
Thanks! Can we get a video of crimson fists.
I tried red under blue for my crimson fists, it's a nice effect for sure.
i knew before i saw any images that you meant sternguard. The models that made me fall in love with marines. (I quite liked the chapter masters too, but never got round to getting them)
Those Ultamarines look very cool with that more painterly paint job.
10:45 I think i still fall under your statement but i do like finishing an army and never buying anything else for it. It makes me feel happy like i accomplished something until i start the next army.
Damn, I really love that red base coat. I'm gonna try new a new chapter with a dark Fang/Mechanicus Standard Grey base colour soon, and this has inspired me to maybe try giving them a rich purple (?) base coat to make the colours pop a bit more. Worth a try!
I got these guys at home, I painted them as different chapters many times, right now they are a squad of Crimson fists along with Pedro Kantor
love the buy painted mention, he is a legend
The pigment powder looks like Kraft Mac N Cheese flavor packet powder
Oh damn EoB, getting sponsorships now? Y'all work really hard, I'm glad!!! And still keeping awkward segways into ads, love it.
6:22 Did I hear degloved? *happy Excoriators screams*
How do we get GW to send Jay the new Horus Heresy box. I wanna see what would happen with those...
Okey! So if you read this, first off… this have to be my favorite channel of inspiration when it comes to painting and hobbying in general. This technique you did now… I k ow you said you were tired of marines BUT ;) plz a Black Templar using this theme or style how to put it.
My local hobbyshop sells used warhammer models. They have two entire buckets full of tactical marines. I am really tempted to just buy up a ton to have a firstborn army I can display somewhere.
I may also switch out my primaris model's helmets with the oldschool ones, as I find the old vader-esc helmet super cool.
Can I ask what blue you used as a highlight color? It looks great on them, especially with the tinting of the blue wash!
Looks great!
I had all my old Crimson fists full tactical company, Terminators, scouts, etc. traded in to build a Primaris army. Kept Pedro, Command Squad, Venerable Dreadnaught, One librarian and Chaplain. I had every character and squad leader named. But I moved on! Now I’m making the Hounds of Dorn!!
Always wanted to get my hands on these models!
What an astonishing transformation.
And man, the newer models are just so much better looking. Ignore the implications in gameplay for sight lines and such.. ignore that, just the aesthetic and scale is greatly improved.
every time we go to our locals, our first born player asks the manager 'gary?, are we going to get new stuff for firstborn?, or are primaris taking over?"
they look amazing!
0:12 Brother Tonius Montanus laying down fire with his little friend
Lol remember when these came out. All the 4th-5th edition veteran sculpts where awesome. We could get them in a blister pack or as cool 5 man sets..
Mk 7/8 power armour will always be the most iconic varient
Woot you know Jay has made it having ads!!! And just like him it has a gaming ulterior motive, making it better for all. I love this guy and what he represents, good wholesome gaming awesomeness.
This would be a great approach for crimson fists. The original space marine cover boy
Dude, that looks awesome.
11:16 Brother my face is melting.
My painting did get remarkably better when I started my Primaris space wolves successors.
