So, as I tried to answer it, I learned about accounts receivable written off and doubtful accounts recovery. Account written off represents the amount that is deemed uncollectible so they are removed from the accounts receivable account. For this, allowance for doubtful accounts is debited and accounts receivable is credited. On the other hand, doubtful account recovery is a reversal of accounts written off as this involves payment of an account after it has been considered as uncollectible. In the meantime, I paid attention to Sir Serrano’s explanation of correctly computing and analyzing the problems. Nonetheless, I was able to capture significant critical points as we uncovered the answer for the two illustrations. Basically, when we write off the accounts receivable that will no longer be recovered, our journal entry will be a debit to the allowance for doubtful accounts and a credit to accounts receivable. So, as I tried to answer it, I learned about accounts receivable written off and doubtful accounts recovery. Account written off represents the amount that is deemed uncollectible so they are removed from the accounts receivable account. For this, allowance for doubtful accounts is debited and accounts receivable is credited. On the other hand, doubtful account recovery is a reversal of accounts written off as this involves payment of an account after it has been considered as uncollectible. And this requires a debit in accounts receivable then credit to allowance for doubtful accounts. Thus, after knowing about this, I was able to answer the second illustration accurately. To obtain the doubtful account expense, the ending balance, write-off, and beginning balance should all be summed together. Before watching the solution, I tried answering the problem first. I was confused on how to account for the DAE in both illustrations, but as the lecture progress I have understood how it is reflected in the T-account of Allowance for doubtful accounts.
