Thanks, Mehdi Hasan, for sounding the alarm - again, and again, and again…
I fear and saddened by a society that burns any book.
The problem isn't free speech the problem is the mixture of ideas undermining any trust in government with the idea of violent initiative instead of speech with a point
It’s what the lowest common denominator of their voter’s crave.
The ones that watch sports to see people crash and burn.
It’s all about drama.
my favorite book .... the upside down bible
This is Missouri people what you think
Back in 1953, American writer Ray Bradbury foresaw America descending into this dysfunctional state of burning books in his novel “Fahrenheit 451”. Strangely America did not heed his warning.
And China has a long history of burning books, beginning with the first emperor Shih Huangdi who burned books and buried Confucian scholars alive to the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
I saw a great quote this morning -- a line from Milan Kundera: “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” It was quoted by Bret Stephens in The New York Times at the very end of his weekly conversation with Gail Collins.
This is exactly what happened in Germany during the 1930's!
I guess these folks never heard of e-books which are available at libraries across the country and you can get an e-library card to check them out no matter where you live. This is just theater for them. "History is important. If you don't know history it's as if you were born yesterday. Anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it" ~Howard Zinn Unfortunately this quote applies to many supporters of the GQP.
OMG thanks for calling this out. Mehdi you are a national treasure. If more people in the media did their jobs like you do MAGA wouldn't have a chance. I wish NPR would grow a spine.
Ray Bradbury proved to be prophetic. We're already halfway to Fahrenheit 451 as a nation. They will sound so charming and intellectual chanting "Let's go Brandon" as they burn their books in front of the governor's mansion. 🙄 Harlan Ellison's classic novel on race relations "The Invisible Man" was among the stack of books to be burned. 🤦♂🤷♂
Not really prophetic. They're just doing something tyrants and anti-intellectuals have done for centuries.
That flame throwing scene is a stark representation of the KKK practice of a burning cross to intimidate and terrorise.
The similarities could not be more obvious.
" Strange infatuation! Ridiculous bigotry! How prejudiced must be the minds..who would wish to destroy their fellow-creatures..because they refused to believe on certain subjects." John Foxe
Mr. Hasan has quietly becoming the best thing in political commentary. He is always prepared, reads well, delivers like a pro and has a pleasing British accent. He's also the only pundit I've yet heard make reference to Godwin's Law. Props.
