I had completely given up on watching Indian movies in my early 20's and recently started watching them again. It is amazing to see good movies coming out these days, especially in Malayalam. With wfh I just listen to your channel while I work and it provides me with so much insight into a lot of movies. Loved trance, it was unlike any other movie and kept me wanting to watch more till the end. You guys are doing such an amazing job here, keep them coming :-)

The movie had me hooked. Though a lot of things didn't make sense in the second half subconsciously. It's only when you pointed it out that I noticed what it was. The music, the editing, the acting were all top notch.
A wonderful review/analysis on Trance by the Mallu Analyst ,one of the best reviews so far seen.
Trance will surely be remembered for many years to come because of its excellence in presenting a movie in a theater in spite of all it's draw backs in the screen play.
Mr. Fahad has not acted in this movie rather he lived every moment of it as the Pastor. Just look at the eyes of other actors when Fahad performs they are really stunned . What an acting by him! As you said , the time has come that no other actor can perform as he does because Fahad has reached his excellence and never compare him with any of the new generation actors.
To me it appears that Mr. Gautham's acting is very good than others, and a new villain has emerged in Malayalam movie industry.
I freaking love this movie and fahad fasil...technical brillant,visually stunning, amazing sound design.

I'd like to appreciate Mr. Anwar Rasheed for his courage and brilliance to exhibit such a modern classic for the Malayalam industry. Really a visual and aural treat, where I got stuck in a dream come true time space thinking that our film industry is still not dry of actors and world class professionals if we had a challenge to prove our point.

A near to perfect analysis ! Could have given more emphasis to the 'lucid dream' perspective of the second half as pointed out in an other video. Also the possibility of Nazriya's and Vinayakan's characters as the alter-ego of the protagonist himself: Nazriya's that of his brother and mother (as her character is believed to have given birth to a child) as his relationship with her is not romantic rather a sympathetic one, vinayakan as the shade of his own perplexed self through whom the unbelievable 'justice' is executed. Trance is path-breaking in many ways and a definite future cult.

വളരെ രോമാഞ്ചം ഫീൽ ആയ അനലിസ്റ്റ്...🔥 പിന്നെ second half ആശയക്കുഴപ്പമായിരുന്നു എന്നു പറയാമെങ്കിലും ശരിക്കും അത് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചത് നല്ല വൃത്തിക്ക് പ്ലാൻ ചെയ്ത് എടുത്തത് ആണെന്ന് ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞാലോ ? .... ഇത്രയും technical brilliance ഉള്ള ഒരു സിനിമയിൽ അങ്ങനെ പാളി പോവും എന്നു തോന്നുന്നുണ്ടോ ? Second half ലെ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും logic ഇല്ലാത്തത് ആയിരുന്നു. അതും ഫഹദിന് അടി കിട്ടിയതിനു ശേഷം. എന്നാൽ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചോ, അതിന് ശേഷം നടക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ വിജു പ്രസാദ്/ജോഷുവ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത് പോലെയാണ് നടക്കുന്നത്. പറഞ്ഞു വരുന്നത് lucid dreaming എന്നു പറയുന്ന ഒരു സംഭവത്തെകുറിച്ചാണ്. അബോധാവസ്ഥയിൽ കിടക്കുന്ന ജോഷുവ കാണുന്ന lucid dreaming ആകും ഒരു പക്ഷേ. ഇതിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാൽ ഈ dream ലൂടെ നമുക്ക് നമ്മൾ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ മാത്രം കാണാൻ സാധിക്കും എന്നതാണ്. ഇത് സാധ്യമാക്കുന്നത് ഒരു സ്ഥിരമായ പ്രത്യേക ഉറക്ക ശൈലി ചെയ്ത് കൊണ്ട് ആകാം. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ സ്ഥിരമായ drugs ന്റെ ഉപയോഗം. ഈ dream ന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത തന്നെ നമ്മൾ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ മാത്രം കാണാൻ പറ്റും എന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല കാണുന്നതെല്ലാം തന്നെ logic ഉള്ളതും ആവണമെന്നില്ല. വിജുവിന്റെ/ജോഷുവയുടെ കാര്യത്തിൽ അയാൾ സ്ഥിരമായി ഡ്രഗ് use ചെയ്യുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ്. കൂടെ ശക്തമായി തലയ്ക്ക് അടി കൂടെ കിട്ടി കിടക്കുമ്പോ അങ്ങനെ dream കാണാൻ ഉള്ള സാധ്യത ഏറെയാണ്. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ തന്നെ മരിക്കും എന്നു ഡോക്ടർമാർ ഉറപ്പിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞ കഥാപാത്രം എങ്ങനെ ചാടി എണീറ്റ് മറ്റൊരു വ്യക്തിത്വം പോലെ ആയി വില്ലന്മാരോട് കച്ചവടം deal ചെയ്യാൻ പോകുന്നത് ? അവിടം തൊട്ട് വിജുവിന്റെ സ്വപ്നകാര്യങ്ങൾ നാം കാണുന്നു. Deal ന് ശേഷം ഗൗതം മേനോൻ പേടിച്ചു പിന്നെ അവനെ വീണ്ടും തല്ലാൻ ശ്രമിക്കും എന്ന് നമ്മൾ വിചാരിച്ചു പക്ഷേ പുള്ളി അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ എല്ലാം കേട്ട് കൊണ്ട് നിൽപ്പാണ്. അടിക്കാൻ വന്ന ചെമ്പനെ ഒറ്റ അടിക്ക് വീഴ്ത്തുകയും ചെയ്ത് , ദിലീഷ് പോത്തൻ ഓടുകയും ചെയ്ത്. പിന്നെ സൗബിന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം. പുള്ളിക്ക് ഫഹദിനോട് പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്യുക എന്നത് മാത്രമാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം. അങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള ഒരാൾക്ക് , ഫഹദിന്റെ കള്ളക്കളികൾ പൊളിക്കണം എങ്കിൽ എന്തിനു ഒരു കള്ള രോഗിയെ കൊണ്ട് വരണം ആയിരുന്നു ? ഇവിടെയും ജയിക്കുന്നത് ഫഹദായിരുന്നു. അത് പോലെ തന്നെ വിനായകൻ വില്ലന്മാരുടെ സ്ഥലത്തു വന്ന് അവരെ കൊല്ലുന്നതും , ദിലീഷ് പോത്തൻ മരിക്കുന്നതും ഒക്കെ നമുക്ക് ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാത്ത ചോദ്യമാണെങ്കിൽ വിജുപ്രസാദിന് അവൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ ആയിരുന്നു എല്ലാം. അവന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആഗ്രഹമെന്ന പോലെ ഒരു മെഗാ സ്റ്റേജിൽ പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ആളുകളുടെ മുന്നിൽ വന്ന് പ്രസംഗിക്കുക എന്നത് നടന്നത് പോലും ഇതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ്. നസ്രിയയുടെ കഥാപാത്രം വിജുവിന്റെ സ്വപ്നലോകത്തിലെ സാങ്കൽപ്പിക കഥാപാത്രവും. അങ്ങനെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം form ആയി വിജുവിന് കിട്ടിയത് പോലും അനിയനിൽ നിന്നാകാം. അവസാനം നസ്രിയയെ തേടി ആംസ്റ്റർഡാമിൽ എത്തുന്നു. ആ ചില്ലു പൊട്ടിച്ചു പുറത്തു വരുന്നതോട് കൂടി വിജു ഈ സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വിട്ട് വന്ന് മരിക്കുകയും ആവാം ഒരു പക്ഷേ. സിനിമ ഇറങ്ങുന്നതിനു മുൻപ് തന്നെ കഥയെ കുറിച്ചു ആർക്കും ഒരു പിടിയും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും astral projection നോ മറ്റോ പോലത്തെ കഥയാകും എന്നൊക്കെ rumours ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. So അതൊക്കെ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ വന്ന കഥ തന്നെ ഏകദേശം അതിനു സമാനമായ lucid dream ആണെന്ന് തോന്നിക്കുന്ന കഥയും.

I loved the movie and Fahad’s rendition of the character. He was beyond words.. Totally loved. Gautham Menon n Dileesh was good. Chemban and Soubin was a misfit. Nazriya did not stand out but fine . All in all I watched the movie twice for seeing Fahads transitions

Do consider the significance of the name "Esther". You mentioned that she resembles the Magdalene, but I interpret that differently. The whole point of the setups of the symbolic names Solomon, Abraham (Avarachan - I debated whether he should've been Yohannan, but that'd have been too easy), and Joshua was to make us ponder why the name Esther was chosen. There an entire layer that can be read into the story based on the Biblical story of Esther and how she turned the tables on the enemies of the Jews in Babylon. That seems to indicate that she was a product of his mind. Esther was his mind planning to then the tables. After she disappears (ie re-integrates into his main personality), he puts into action his plan to turn the tables on Solomon. That supports the interpretation of the final scene indicating that his mind wants to break free of the fishbowl he's been in from after his mother died (when the fish symbol first appears).

Enikku 2nd half actually exist cheyaathathupole aanu thonniye. It is his "dream". Following points confirms the same :
1. Actually movie-yude endil Nazriya glass smash cheythu completely black aavuka aanu cheythathu. It suggested Fahad's death.
2. "I don't live in your reality", "Welcome" and his pose as Jesus Christ when he says I'm from the heavens.
3. Vinayakan's family is the story that he told to Soubin during the interview (Father dies due to religious intoxication, mother and daughter dying due to poison i.e. religion, son awakened by Jesus i.e. Fahad apologising to Vinayakan's family)
4. Uncanny resemblance of Nazriya to Sreenath and she herself helps Fahad in rediscovering Sreenath and the climax is also suggestive of Fahad meeting up with Sreenath in his death.
5. Drugs that are provided destroying/killing Fahad (It's actually a reference to Sreenath's dialogue earlier in the film and none of the drugs actually can cause the side effects mentioned in real life and he was already taking them even before he met Solomon and Issac)
6. Dharmajan remains the only new main character in film that was never mentioned before.
7. The first time Nazriya and Fahad meets on screen, Nazriya is only showcased through the mirror which is suggestive of being a reflection of Fahad's thought.
All of these are suggestive of Fahad actually making up the 2nd half of the movie after his injury. His death is the end of the movie suggesting reunion with his brother.
It's actually good for the industry that people are actually having different opinions and are discussing plot themes.

For me it was the most awaited movie of the year. Watched in double 4K projector with dolby atmos from Areis plex SL cinemas ,Trivandrum for a wonderful theatre experience.
Cinematography, bgm, sound design and editing was outstanding. It’s one of the best technical brilliant movie in Malayalam, after Big B and Iyobinte Pusthakam.

The movie contact (1997) credited in the trance is a huge indication of the importance of scene where fahad opens the mirror cabinet and takes the pill. The shot (like the famous shot in contact) looks as if the camera came out from the mirror, indicates the events happening after that as an projection (hallucination) from fahad's mind or as a result of the transcendental state fahad's character is in.

സ്വന്തം അനിയനെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ പറ്റാതെ പോയ ജോഷ്വാ സൂയിസൈഡ് അറ്റംപ്റ്റ് നടത്തിയ എസ്തറിനെ അതിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു(കത്തികൾ ഒക്കെ ക്‌ളീൻ ചെയ്യുന്നതും, ഡ്രഗ് അഡിക്ഷൻ മാറ്റാൻ നോക്കുന്നതും മറ്റും). കുഞ്ഞന്റെ ഓർമ്മകളിൽ നിന്ന് ഒളിച്ചോടിയ ജോഷ്വാ പിന്നീട് എസ്തറുമായി ആ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നുണ്ട്.

വിനായകന്റെ കാരക്ടർനെ താൻ അതുവരെ കണ്ട മണ്ടൻ വിശ്വാസ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിനിധി ആയിട്ടാകണം ജോഷ്വാ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടാവുക. സിനിമയിൽ എസ്തർനെ കാണാതാകുന്ന അവസ്ഥയിൽ അല്ല ജോഷ്വാ അബോധാവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്ന് ഉണരുന്നത്. മരുന്ന് കൂടുതൽ എഫക്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ഉണരാനുള്ള ബോഡിയുടെ ശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാകണം എസ്തറിനെ കാണാതാകുന്നത്. ഈ അവസ്ഥയിൽ തന്നെ ജോഷ്വായ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന പരിണാമമാണ് തോമസിന്റെ മകളുടെ മരണവും അയാൾക്ക് മുന്നിലെ കുമ്പസാരവും തുടർന്ന് തോമസ് സോളമനെയും ഐസക്നെയും കൊല്ലുന്നതും(ലോജിക് മിസ്റ്റേക്ക്) ജോഷ്വാ സ്വയം മീഡിയക്ക് മുന്നിൽ കുറ്റസമ്മതം നടത്തുന്നതും മറ്റും.ജോഷ്വായുടെ പരിവർത്തനം ഒരു പരിധി വരെ അവിടെ പൂർണ്ണമാകുന്നു. രണ്ട് വർഷത്തെ ചികിത്സക്ക് ശേഷം.. അത് വരെ പണത്തിനും പ്രശസ്തിക്കും പിന്നാലെ പോയ ജോഷ്വാ സ്നേഹം(എസ്തർ) തേടി പോകുന്നിടത്ത്... ഒടുവിൽ എസ്തറിനെ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നിടത്.. ക്ലൈമാക്സിൽ എസ്തറിനും(love) ജോഷ്വായ്ക്കും ഇടയിലെ ചില്ല് പൊളിക്കുന്നിടത്ത്.. തന്നിലെ പരിവർത്തനം പരിപൂർണമാകുന്നിടത്ത് ജോഷ്വാ അബോധാവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്ന് ഉണരുന്നു.

Fahad is the most flexible actor in recent times, he can do almost any role or character, expecting more good movies of fahad. And this video was outstanding. Thanks👍👍
Watched it yesterday. Trust me I was thrilled just to witness a phenomenon in action called Fahadh Faasil. Every second on frame his presence was enticing and screen perfect. I don't know, all those neg comments about the second half had me give up hope once it began bit I was in for a treat to be honest. Although a little more consistency with the transition might have helped, I've been in the ride thinking it's a hallucination (Truth be told, I thought the entire sequence of events since his move to Mumbai was Vijus creation, but couldn't get any evidence to prove it) . Dop, bgm, sound and editing were exceptional throughout. Yes, the script had its flaws but see we are a bunch of movie lovers who're praising Devadoothan to be a modern classic. If we're doing that Trance should be our new cult for sure. Could have been a little more of a crowd pleaser but f**k it I don't care, I am happy with what I got in Trance.
The second half is the Fahd character's wish-fulfillment, fantasy. The last shot clearly imply it.
