    Fish Bowl Terrarium Anyone Can Build
    Don't keep fish in a fish bowl. Make a Terrarium instead.
    In this video I used a glass fish bowl to make a closed terrarium. I used a round acrylic sheet as a lid held in place using stick on silicone bumpers.
    I created a drainage layer using LECA ( lightweight expanded clay aggregate) which will store the excess water in this setup keeping the substrate relatively dry. A window screen mesh barrier was cut in a circular shape and placed above it to prevent soil falling into the gaps of the drainage layer and clogging it. A layer of chracoal was placed above it. This will help with filtration of toxins and reduce bad odours. This was followed by the terrarium substrate mix which was sloped towards the back to create some depth. I used 2 pieces of Honeycomb driftwood to create a simple hardscape. Planting followed next, I used a Rabbits Foot Fern, a Montana Fern, A Fittonia Fortissimo, Fittonia Juanita, Pellionia Repens, Sheet Moss, Spiky Moss, Selaginella Uncinata, Ficus Pumila and Ficus Quercifolia to bring the scape to life. The foreground was detailed with sand and crished lava rocks. More details were added in the form of thin driftwood pieces. Finally the terrarium was given a heavy misting, springtails were added and the lid placed on the opening to complete the build.

      It doesn't need to, some people don't like ferns for example and would prefer to choose a different plant, or they like rocks over wood. But this shows you HOW to go about designing and building a terrarium which is a design YOU want to look at. It will still look as good but just different.

    I really loved this terrarium. Please clarify these: 1. Instead of the mix you have shown..can we use the regular organic earth magic potting soil and/or mixed with cocopeat?? And instead of leca, is it fine to use the regular white marble pebbles.

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  3 місяці тому

      No that soil may not work well. White marbles can be used but leca or lava rocks preferred for housing beneficial bacteria.

    How do you keep your moss green?

  • @igorgilza
    @igorgilza 4 місяці тому

    I also started to put sand in my soil mix. Already repotted all my plants in the regular serpa mix, which is 1 part cocopeat, 2 parts sphagnum, 1 part sand, 1 part bark. I find sand to be great addition because it provides more aeration or whatever. I personally would add 2-3 mm gravel and crushed leca as sand can get messy. Have you observed any benefits of adding sand?

    • @igorgilza
      @igorgilza 4 місяці тому +1

      Gorgeous fittonia btw

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  4 місяці тому +2

      Crushed leca or granular leca, crushed lava rocks or pumice all are good options. Sand improves the texture of the soil visually which I like. It keeps the soil loose and resists compaction, aids in drainage as well. Coarser grains can help with aeration but I think the orchid bark does a better job with aeration.

    Isn't charcoal and carbon the same thing or different. Can anyone explain please.

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  Місяць тому

      Activated carbon, commonly referred to as activated charcoal, is a strong and adaptable substance with several uses. It is a type of carbon that has undergone special processing to greatly expand its surface area and produce microscopic holes, which greatly enhance its adsorbent properties. In order to produce high-quality activated charcoal with precisely adjusted qualities for particular applications, carbon-rich materials are heated under strict control at an activated carbon plant
