  • NAPB Webinar from Anthony Parker, commissioner with Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Plant Breeder's Rights Office.
PVP is a from of Intellectual Property (IP) protection, conceptually similar to patents and copyrights. A breeder can apply for protection, and if the conditions are met (New, Distinct, Uniform, and Stable), they can receive an exclusive monopoly for up to 20 years (25 for trees and grapevines). This system of IP protection is highly harmonized globally under the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). Exclusive IP right s, licensing, and royalties can support investment in plant breeding, public, private, large, small, domestic, and foreign.
