Rusty Wallace vs The Future
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Rusty Wallace is a very accomplished NASCAR driver. After having a decade of being one of the top drivers in the sport he started to face hurdles in the middle to back part of his career. In this video I talk about those hurdles that rusty wallace faced and how the future really challenged him from the mid 90s all the way til retirement

Rusty Wallace winning his one championship outside of the 2 car always aggravated me. He peaked before his prime... like what?
To be fair, he probably could've won the 1993 Championship had he not crashed so often that year. S1apshoes said it himself in his 9 Types of NASCAR Winners Alignment Chart video: "Rusty was just too chaotic for his own good."
@@nascarfanatic2425 exactly... like his peak in '89 was BEFORE his prime in the mid 90's lol
@@jc1424His peak was '88. It was a much better year than '89, Bill just had zero finishes outside the top 20.
A very interesting video. You could tell in the early 90s, Rusty was positioning himself to be the driver of the decade. The midwest taking the mantle from drivers from the south. Rusty had a carefully prepared image thanks to both his supreme confidence and his PR. All this while running one of the most iconic paint schemes. But in a flash, Jeff Gordon came out of left field and became the face of the sport. Very interesting to see how this trend continued through his teammates and retirement.
Thanks for checking out the video man. I love the content you make!
@@Eliteprecision29 You're very welcome, and thank you as well!
Rusty Wallace is a real-life Chick Hicks.
@@Eliteprecision29well hey I like rusty Wallace and you're right he's still a one of the best drivers but I feel he would have at least 2 more wins in 2006-2007 and if Jeff Gordon never comes in to NASCAR well then I guess you could say Rusty would be up there with Richard Petty and Dale Sr and would have been a five time champion had those things happened and you're right about Rusty being a one man show just like lightning McQueen from cars 1 in real life and the fact that he never liked having teammates.😊
I don't fault Rusty. It wasn't just him, his entire generation felt that way, outside of maybe Mark Martin. The problem was, unlike the rest of them, he was still competitive when he finished his final lap. I often wondered how much different Penske would have been if he and Newman got along. I think it could have benefitted both of them, and perhapw Penske would have been more prepared for the COT
You mentioned Mark Martin. He and Jeff Burton did get along which showed as, outside of a 2001 blip, Roush had an otherwise strong run from 1997-2006
@@chrisuncleahmad that's why I specifically mentioned Mark. He welcomed Burton with open arms, to this day says Kenseth is his favorite driver of all time. He was about the only driver of that generation that understood the direction Nascar was going in, and knew it was better to embrace it.
if Rusty still raced until 2008, maybe he would've had 1 or 2 more wins added in his career
I will never forget the 1998 Pontiac Excitment 400. I was in the first row in turn 1 when Rusty took out Jeff. I was a Dale Sr fan and my best friend was a Jeff Gordon fan. I remember going crazy! (I was 16 at the time). I even remember giving a high five to the guy behind me who was also a Dale Sr fan. My friend was not happy! Haha! That is a memory that will always stick with me.
I miss Rusty Wallace every time I see the #2 car on track. Great job on the video.
What did you think of drivers like Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski and Austin Cindric?
@@bighand1530I like Brad!
@@RAtheGoodRailfanner_888 Brad Keselowski is my favorite driver still racing.
Brad was the best driver they had since Rusty left. Kurt was definitely fiery but ultimately left a legacy of more entertaining radio messages than race wins. Austin Cindric is really the Penske version of the Dillon boys, an Xfinity-level talent in a good Cup ride on his family connection. I associate the 2 car with passionate, outspoken drivers, and I don't really think Cindric fits the mold as much as the other guys did.
@@cco53587 I find Brad Keselowski kinda underrated. Kurt Busch was quite the character for sure. Austin Cindric being a Penske version of the Dillon boys is an interesting comparison.
Even though I'm a Jeff Gordon fan, I'm a Rusty Wallace fan as well
Nice
Spot on video. As someone watching NASCAR at the time, this was exactly how I saw it, and wasn't surprised at all to hear those Dale Jr Download revelations.
Rusty was my driver and Dale !!!
Pretty funny how evident it was that Rusty didn’t like Gordon even after he retired
Rusty Wallace was one of the best short track drivers that ever raced Winston Cup. Not only did Gordon effect him but the 2 flips in the Daytona 500 and the Winston 500 at Talladega also greatly effected him. Superspeedways where always his weekness. Short tracks, road courses, anything under a mile and a half he was extremely competitive. But he sucked at restrictor plates races. As far as what kind of teamate he was . . . Well . . He wished everything about "teammates" would go straight to hell. But take Gordon out of the equation yes he wins more races. . But if Davey Allison wouldn't have gotten killed Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordons stats would look far different not to mention Rusty. Great video appreciate your precise knowledge of the best years NASCAR ever had or will have. Merry Christmas. J.W. HUEYTOWN ALABAMA
Then how do you explain his success at big tracks like 2.5 mile Pocono (4 wins) or 2 mile Michigan (5 wins)?
I can relate with Rustys frustration with having "teammates". His story line runs parallel with mine. I worked for a huge company, and worked my way to the top! They just wouldn't let me do my job! I had to be CONSTANTLY training new people, over, and, over, and over! To a point where it became so frustrating, that i had to just quit!
Rusty kinda became unlikeable when Jeff Gordon rose
Poor Kasey kahne. He’s always been my favourite driver. He and Carl Edwards both had far less cup success than they should’ve. Now that I say that, imagine how Mark Martin feels with 6 runner up championship finishes.
First off, great presentation on Rusty my guy for I loved it 🙏🏾💯🙏🏾.
Honestly, no Rusty wouldn't have faired any better if Jeff Gordon wasn't on the scene as the tides of a new generation in racing was already showing its hand then with Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, etc. The main teams i feel that Rusty would have faired best would have been RFR/RFK or DEI (*cough*) since at that time; everyone fended for themselves with information that made their cars better in the organization rather better overall despite being seen as the best of the best in regards to talent.
Honestly, I don’t think Jeff Gordon dethroned Rusty and Dale as much as their own stubbornness to adapting to change. Gordon and Evernham invented the modern NASCAR team with their car designs, setups, and pit crews whereas Rusty was still trying to run his team like 1985. It was no secret that Rusty refused to run the stiffer rear springs and larger sway bars that the younger drivers were using and his performance suffered from it, especially at the mile and half tracks. Rusty was also one of the last drivers to have an engineer on his track staff and regularly refused to listen to them when it came to changing the cars.
Granted, he was near 50 and past his prime when he retired but it was obvious that Rusty’s drive and skill were still there. He should’ve won at least another 10-15 races in his career and at least one more championship but it is what it is now.
Great video bud!
Thanks!

First video I've seen from your channel and it kept me glued to the screen. Love these types of videos, you earned a subscriber! 👍🏼
Thanks so much man!
Oh, EP 29, Merry Christmas my friend! Thank you for the GREAT content! I know how much effort and dedication goes into making all of these videos we all enjoy! o7 and God bless.
Happy holidays man and thank you for always supporting me!
Damn, I really feel bad for Jeremy Mayfield, I can’t imagine hearing that from Rusty. No congratulations, your in the points lead, no help from Rusty on how to handle that situation, just, your going to help ME win the championship.
I think Rusty inspired the character for Lightning Mqueen!
I remember when I was a kid, it surprised me to hear Rusty had won a championship. But I was born in 1991, so 1989 felt like ancient history lol
I knew Rusty was a good driver, but I guess I never really considered how good he was before Jeff Gordon arrived on the scene
Amazing Video !!!
Rusty was my favorite driver in the very early days of my nascar Fandom. Unfortunately my 1st year watching nascar was 99' and by this point, his prime was behind him. He only had 7 wins after 98'.
I know this won't happen for obvious reasons, but Penske really needs to bring back the blue deuce in some way.
Interestingly, 4 of those wins came in 2000 (a year he also had 9 poles!)
I watched a tone between 01 - 05 and Rusty was my fav driver but it did suck he wasn't winning as much. He should have sucked it up about the teammate thing because it was just a reality, I wish he had not retired in 05 too he could have had a good season like Mark Martin ended up doing at Hendrick. Maybe he should have switched teams?
Just subbed
Thank you :)
I hated this dude back in the 80's and was 90's lol! Seeing him get humbled during the early and mid 2000's brought joy to my dark heart!
Good old crusty Wallace.
The 99 Daytona 500 all lied on his crew chief, who didn’t want Rusty to pit, which caused Rusty to lose the 500.
Dude was his own kryptonite, maybe if he worked as a team he and Team Penske would… gee i dunno, win a title? just ask Logano, Keselowski and Blaney. Shame that Newman went right down that same frikkin road too. Both of them had much more potential.
I feel like he gets a win in 2006 but has 2 bad years in 07 and 08
If he wouldve just let his team setup the car, he wouldve been better off. I did the same shit on video gamers tho.. once i "know" something, its hard to change the setup
Rusty should have race until 2015!
If he would've drove until 2015 I think it would've been a case where he overstayed his welcome. Way passed his prime and would've been in the way. That's kinda how Terry labonte and Bobby labonte were unfortunately.
@@Eliteprecision29 Is there any racer that start in 1970 and is still racing today?
Unfortunately, the #22 team is number one at Penske
I miss the old points format, and dammit i miss Jeremy Mayfield. Such a great driver. Too bad he got busted.
1993 Rusty Got Robbed of a Title he won 10 Races that Season, he should have won in 1988 and 1994
tbf Bill Elliott was a little more consistent compared to Rusty, the same could be said for Earnhardt, Rusty was good but he was just too inconsistent, something that you shouldn't be under the Winston format of points
