    My ugly phase is after i did the drawing, while i am drawing i'm thinking "man it looks good, i'm getting better at this" but like one day after i did the drawing is just "bro this looks like shit wtf"

      I think that's interesting cus some people say the opposite
      They get too absorbed into their art that they cant see the bigger picture and always dilly dally on the mistaked they clearly see but after a while of taking a break, perhaps having a snack, they'll notice "hey that aint too bad"

    • @1greninjawolfbossdeath648
      @1greninjawolfbossdeath648 Рік тому +711

      @@neeevirus It is a combination of both sometimes for me. As in sometimes I don't notice the mistakes and sometimes I just *hate* what I am creating (not an artist but sometimes do art for fun).
      Either way break from the piece is needed.

    My art started and ended in the same ugly phase for 13 years of persisting, practicing, and yet only getting worse no matter what I tried. I ended up having to stop for my health, which was definitely the best thing for me, and while I still hate myself for not being able to learn (or even stay ‘only’ as bad as I started) like everyone else seems to, I’m trying my hardest to at least start liking other people’s art again.

    Facts. I’ve also found it helpful to take more breaks. I used to always finish my drawings all in one day because I just wanted to get to editing the time lapse video. And then I took a drawing course in my second college semester where I was forced to do bigger and more time consuming drawings. And I found that taking breaks is more than necessary to bring out the best of your art abilities and also helps you get through the ugly phase. I just read a comment saying that sometimes after taking a short break, you may come back to your art and think “hey this looks better than I thought.” 100% true imo

    • @VintageVirgo2002
      @VintageVirgo2002 26 днів тому +1

      Yeah its always good to take a step back from anything and take breaks and come back to it refreshed and calm. Plus you dont need to rush everything you do in life its better to soak in the process of the art and the sketching and the erasing and the coloring rather than only focus on the end result yk. Live in the moment and take your time and you dont even gotta finish something in a day as theres no need to rush (i mean unless you are on a deadline to make art for a job but otherwise) you dont need to rush as life isn't going anywhere so yeah. I like the art process especially the coloring part as i find it relaxing to just color everything and the end result is fun i guess to see what you ended up with but doing it is better than already being done with. Its the journey that matters not the destination basically.

I just realized that I’ve accidentally created a coloring book for myself because I have so many sketches in my watercolor sketchbook waiting to be painted. I think it was another one of my other favorite modern artists, Christopher Lovell, that said something along the lines of “You cannot take your art so seriously that you can’t start over” meaning, don’t be afraid of taking those chances! Every artist who is serious about their craft has had to make those leaps, and sometimes, despite all your best efforts, it doesn’t work out. But that doesn’t mean it’s a failure! Its been five years that I have not drawn anything. Every time I want to do something, my ideas that I have before just escapes me and I'm left being empty. People called me creative because I can have so many ideas in the span of a few minutes. I don't know if it something to do with my mother's death or I just lost the passion of drawing but watching your videos comforts me.

      I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you can find a way to get drawing again. I am much like you. I’m a perfectionist and procrastinator. when ideas pop into my head i write them down in that instant or put them in your notes in you phone. This way you can save your ideas but there’s no pressure to complete them instantly. As for actually drawing it can be hard. Especially if you’re feeling disconnected. Remember why you love art and forget all the other pressures. Just draw. I’m going to link a playlist of timed drawing exercises in a second comment. Just get your hands moving❤️ I hope you can get over this hard period.

      It comes naturally, my dude. Don't worry about your art style. It's something I used to stress over as well before realizing how insignificant it is- because art styles are overrated. I draw art in countless different styles, so I never say I have a specific one. You'll find your core skill in style eventually, but for now, just make the art. It's easier said than done, but don't worry about being unique, and let your hand and imagination just guide the creation of whatever you want to draw. And NEVER compare yourself to others because remember; everyone was once a beginner, and everyone made...not the best art at some point. Practice, practice, practice. We all learn at different paces, and the beauty of art is that it accepts everyone in any style at any pace.

      In two words, i believe its values and colour temperature. Shadowed areas are cooler toned (e.g. cooler red compared to warm) and mostly you just have to get the values right and it will look realistic and three-dimensional despite the colour. Maybe you could also edit the saturation or hue of your reference pictures on some photo editing app/software? I think I've heard the James Gurney book 'Color and Light' goes really in depth on this theory if you really wanted to take it further.

Art is whatever you want it to be unlike how they teach you in school. In school in art class they'll teach you that proportions are right and perfect straight lines are the correct way of doing art but thats where they're wrong because there is no right way to do art and lines dont always have to be straight they can be squiggly and a mess and thats what makes them more beautiful to me yk what i mean?

    OK this is what I needed rn. Recently I've been struggling to find a 'good' reference but the same process happens every time, I start drawing over a background and then I remove the sketches because I don't see anything in the piece. By the time I've found a reference I really want to do and I put in the time to finish it, I notice myself sort of finding myself in the drawing and making it up to me standards. Sometimes I still might not be happy with it until I take a step back and realise that it wasn't a waste of time and I've just shocked myself. Don't doubt yourself, there's always hope.

    It's easier to pass the ugly phase when you're just drawing casually!
    I believe when you're drawing casually and not for work, commission, etc. It won't stress you that much and you won't be scared by your strokes. (probably also the reason why sometime when you draw unintentionally/casually it turn out so good)
    And i agree with Scott, you just gotta believe it, and yourself. Don't be scared putting some touches and draw some strokes. You'll see where you're going eventually.
