    Our dog was diagnosed with kidney disease a couple months ago. He already didn't want to eat and the prescription diet food didn't help. He didn't like any of it, but once he tasted this homemade food, he started eating again! He's back to his old happy self again! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! You've brought the puppy back out of him!

    I made this recipe for the first time 10 days ago. My dog with renal failure refused to eat the prescription diet and has been a very particular eater for some time. She loves this recipe! She has eaten it twice a day for 10 days in a row and I cannot remember the last time she has done that. She is energetic and now runs into the kitchen when she hears me pick up her bowl. She also has stopped getting up multiple times throughout the night to go out. We are getting a blood test in coming weeks . I expect it to be very good based upon her improvement thus far. I cannot thank you enough!!!!

      @@Topdogtips101 update on my dog. The last time she was tested in December, she had been on this homemade food recipe only 10 days and her BUN and creatinine were pretty bad. It is now three months later and she had another test today, 3.7.2023. I am so pleased to say she has NOT lost any weight in three months (she was steadily losing prior to December). Both her BUN and creatinine values have fallen (instead of increasing). Her vet said "continue doing what you are doing - she is holding her own". This food has made all the difference. and she still loves it! I will never be able to thank you enough.

    Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. My 13 y/o old was diagnosed with kidney disease about 8 months ago. We have been through a lot of different kidney diet foods between the Vet's office and PetSmart, but after a few weeks our dog would stop being interested. I had to sit on the floor with him and try to hand feed him just so he would eat a few bites. About 2 weeks ago he stopped eating all together. He Ended up in the hospital for about two days he’s back on sub Q fluids and eating his Royal Canon food with no issues LOL. However I have found something that is working and his numbers are improving quicker than with RC and Fluids alone....look up epakitin on amazon by vetoquinol. I adopted my dog about 8 years ago when he was 10... he always had a sensitive stomach and we struggled with finding a food that wouldn't make him violently ill. We'd find a brand, stick with it for a year or two and then started having issues (diarrhea and vomitting). When he turned 16, nothing seemed to work. The only thing he could keep down was a homemade recipe I found. About 6 months ago, my vet said his kidney levels were elevated and suggested switching to a homemade diet specific for kidney disease, which lead me to this recipe. It was closest to what I had been feeding him already so it was an easy transition. I just had his levels re-checked.... they are NORMAL. "My vet laughed and said whatever you are feeding him is working, keep it up. I'd be happy to see these lab results for a 10 year old dog, let alone an 18 year old." This recipe, along with a very low dose of Enalapril, were the only changes that were made.

    This recipe is pretty close to what i make for my dog. December 7th 2018 my 10 year old bull terrier was diagnosed with extreme kidney failure. The vets only recommendation was euthanasia. I started researching canine renal failure because i wasn't ready to give up on her. For two weeks i took Millie in for IV fluids to help push out the toxins and i started making her food from scratch. I took her back to the vet January 25th 2019 and her numbers are cut in half! The vet was amazed at how good She looks! Don't give up if your pup is diagnosed with kidney disease, it doesn't have to be a death sentence.

Meaning: give her/him something different each time you make food, just remember to keep it 50-50; half protein and half veg and fruit. Two ingredients i always use are celery and parsely, those are very good at cleansing the blood and since the kidneys are currently sluggish that will help. She had a surgery on her thyroid and had a remove a mass. All this had affected her kidney and vet recommended low protein diet. Her blood levels for kidney were 2.9 and had a high bun level. After 1 month her bun level went to normal and kidney level to 1.9. Still high but great improvement. She also has lots spunk, not peeing in the house and energy. Parsley is generally safe for your dog in small amounts. However, large amounts of parsley can cause stomach discomfort and diarrhea. It may also act as a diuretic which could lead to dehydration. Excessive amounts of parsley given daily can be toxic to the dog's liver.Feb 13, 2016

I also give him a supplement that I crush up from a mix of calcium, Vit B, vit C and a bit of sodium bicarbonate. The calcium binds to phosphorus and helps flush the kidneys. I also give him Pet Wellbeing Kidney Support drops with each meal. I’ve been doing all of it plus the coenzyme 10 for the entire time and he’s doing so great I don’t dare change anything. Thank you.

    • @DCARA06
      @DCARA06 3 роки тому +1

      @@RosieRosebud Yes the blood test did improve but really the major improvement was how he felt. It was 2018 when he got sick, he didn't want to eat, had no energy, his stomach was making really strange noises, etc. We did start out with the vet food (I think it was Royal Canine Kidney support) dry and wet combined. And I think I bought at least a few bags and cans of that plus the calcium supplement they advised "Aventi Kidney Complete". But then after reading and finding this food I realized that protein isn't the enemy for dogs with kidney disease, phosphorus is. In fact because our dog is a senior and a greyhound he really needs the protein (well all dogs do) to maintain muscle mass and a healthy weight. The vet food was mostly corn which doesn't have phosphorus but also doesn't have much of anything useful to maintain a healthy body weight.
      I don't think his kidney numbers would be all that valuable to you as he is a greyhound and they have different blood chemistry especially kidney (normal greyhound kidney levels are much higher than other dogs, so his are crazy high). We didn't even retest his blood until just a few months ago, he is feeling and doing great.
      You might want to start on the vet food (we did) but longterm I would move away from it so your dog doesn't loose too much muscle mass. Good luck! Give him lots of fresh water too. If he really has no appetite at all I think there are some pills the vet might have to encourage the appetite as a last resort. Or try doctoring the vet food with wet food overtop or add some of this food overtop.

    Any vet that tells you feed low protein, isn't helping your canine friend..... Studies from decades ago, proved this was wrong. Drs pushed steroids on my friend. Out of ignorance I listened & gave them to her. Within days, her behavior became bizzare. She didn't get excited for a drive, or let's go, or let's take a walk..day ten, she would lay down, & sit up, & lay down & sit up, this went on for 15 minutes until I picked her up, & that night I decided that was it. Within the next wk I weaned her off, & picked up vitamin k, our concern was internal bleeding.. The k, & turmeric put her blood tests back to normal. Now, 10 years later at 15 her kidneys are a problem. The vets pushing they're kibble & they're canned crap. I use the vets for blood tests only. Lifetime Prednisone was they're solution 10 years ago, had I done that, Cushing's disease would have killed her long ago. Remember, vets make $ off of Sick animals not healthy ones. I'm grateful for one vet, that leveled with me, about vets in general.....His warning, they learn, what drug companies teach. As far as nutrition, 90% of vets, will push you towards, whatever they're selling. A good vet will steer you right, but they are hard to find. Most want you to believe, the same sOluTionS they were taught. You can walk into most any vets office, a sniffle, an itch, etc etc it's bizarre how often they're solution is Prednisone. Btw if your dogs on pred & won't walk, it's possible it's vision is blurry, it swells the eyes....It's bad news.......

As per his vet’s advised.. we stick to his renal diet ( royal canine urinary s/o) and daily subcutaneous fluids. After two weeks, his creatinine level went down to 2.12 from 2.60 before his surgery. I’ve been feeding him the same food since last July 13 when I started to notice some episodes of vomiting, he threw up some undigested food. I found this video and tried this one for him. He gained weight and he really loved this until the second week of August, when his stool turned watery.. with the presence of pumpkin on it. We went to the vet yesterday and his creatinine is now 2.57. And he lost weight again and seems in pain. If you aren’t sure about the right proportioning, better to not try this. Or You might feed your furbabies once in awhile but not for daily meals. You can also ask to your vet first before giving this to your little precious. ❤️

    Question:
    Wouldn't it be better to leave the ground beef raw? I read that cooked meats have more phosphorous which is bad for dogs with kidney failure. Also, does it matter what lean meat/fat ratio is used?

    Can't always get fresh green beans (or other veg) where I am. I can my own with nothing in the jars but veg and water. I also can my own pumpkin and such. I've even started canning my own dog food so if I have to go anywhere & bring my dogs with me, I have my own food for them. Easier than hauling frozen stuff especially on long trips. Also limited freezer space so canning it works.
    Found your recipe a while back. Awesome!

      Yvonne Anderson... my 12 year old rescue (Shih Tzu) was diagnosed 5 years ago with beginning stage of kidney disease. My vet put him on KD by Science Diet. He had labs last week and his kidney function is still in the normal range. The KD brought his levels down and has kept them stable all these years!! Put your furbaby on it. They have some yummy chicken and beef stew now, which my guy loves. They also have a lamb flavor and chicken flavor that are in the loaf style. My other two Shih Tzu's are always trying to eat his food too, so it must be tasty. They all love the dry as well. My guy is 16# and I leave his dry out all the time and he eats whenever he wants....he eats 1/2 of a can per day. Warm up any leftovers a few seconds before serving so it's not cold. Feed your pup a homemade one occasionally, for a treat. Just my recommendation from someone who has been where you are. Best wishes!

    Would it be ok to switch the lean ground beef for lean turkey or even bonless skinless chicken breast meat or does the protien source have to be beef? And is it ok to add a small container of plain fat free yogurt to help add moisture and maybe some probiotics to the food? I really want to try this for our old girl. Our poodle Lucy is 13 years old and has been diagnosed with kidney disease. We have been feeding her your food exclusively for about nine weeks. Her appetite was immediately restored and she has been eating one cup three times daily. She loves it, and her bladder control is much better than before we started your diet, but she is more aggressively than before looking for dog biscuit treats, indicating to us that she is hungry. She appears to have enough energy given her age, but we are concerned about her weight.
    At her highest weight, which was several years ago, she was about 55 pounds. She has been steadily losing weight and is now only 48 pounds and is looking pretty gaunt. We have been using lean hamburger rather than very lean for about three weeks, but she is not showing any tendency to gain weight. The vet has approved your diet but is recommending the addition of Hill's Kidney Care k/d, which is pretty expensive. The recommendation is for approximately 10 ounces per day, but so far (only a short time) we have not noticed any weight gain.
    I know that low protein is a key aspect of food for dogs suffering from kidney failure. Do you have any recommendations as to how to increase the caloric content of your formula that does not increase the protein content?
    We would like to thank you for your video and your obvious care for everyone's canine companions. You have been very helpful in restoring Lucy's joie de vivre and overall health.

    When you go to your vets, you need to play poor, otherwise, they run useless tests to make money out of you. my dog 17 yr old biscon has frequent urination due to kidney insufficiency. The vet wants us to do urine, blood, x ray tests REPEATEDLY. then the vet wants us to do ultrasound because all the previous tests result are NEGATIVE. I am a foreign trained MD (of course I won't let her know that) so i asked her questions: "What if ultrasound comes back negative, what you do?" she said: "we probably treat him as renal insufficiency." I said why don't you treat him as renal insufficiency now? she said: without tests, we can't just give meds without evidence. i thought angrily: back in the days there is no ultrasound, you don't treat dog? so we just "play" poor, beg and beg, 3 times, then the vet RX ACE inhibitor which is treating renal insufficiency. but now after research, i think diet is very important. so i hold off those meds, and i will try diet. Vets will help you by giving advise (after you beg of course) when they saw you absolutely have no money. i understand they need to make money to run their business. too sad. pet insurance is insanely expensive. so people have no medical knowledge is very difficult to deal with it. This video is helping people to help their dogs. thank you kind hearted people.

      I would just like to clarify regarding what you said about “sawdust”. In a butcher shop or even just the meat section of a supermarket, “sawdust” is not wood. It is the finely ground meat stuck in the blades and platform of their meat cutting machines. When they cut hard solid frozen meat on the machines, it leaves a lot of frozen meat dust behind. Hence they call it “sawdust”. At the end of the day when they clean up their equipment, they accumulate this “sawdust” because it is still meat.

      @@marielysannramos-monforte4657 Celulose is the fourth ingredient in the special dog food
      my vet told me to try .I was told and read somewhere that cellulose was Sawdust,
      '"ground up WOOD"". but it also comes from plant matter just a filler that no fur baby needs, I may be wrong but I did not say anything about a butcher shop or a meat section . I would rather they have good old butcher scraps than chicken beaks and absolutely NO corn.

    • @marielysannramos-monforte4657
      @marielysannramos-monforte4657 4 роки тому

      @@Tangleddogs Pls allow me to explain in a different way. There are 2 kinds of sawdust. First is "ground wood". This cannot be even used as filler because dogs can't digest wood or any wood byproducts.
      Second kind is "ground meat" (whatever meat was cut in the machine i.e. pork, chicken, beef, etc.) that was stuck in the blades of meat cutting machines from butcher shops, or meat section of supermarket. It is an expression by butchers, they also call it "sawdust". This second kind is the kind of sawdust commonly added in commercial dogfood. Because we humans don't buy this anymore, but it is still meat cleaned off from the blades so this is the kind of sawdust added in commercial dogfood (not the ground wood kind).
      Right before the supermarket closes, you can go to the meat section and watch them clean the cutting machines. They will be scraping off a lot of meat from the blades. You can ask them what it's called, they will tell you they call it "sawdust". You can even ask what they do with it afterwards.

    My cocker spaniel was recently getting fussy with food and drinking more, I got some bloodwork done and he has kidney disease, his kidneys were scanned and looked ok but as a complication he had a splenic tumour which had to be removed. Whilst waiting surgery he was started on Benazapet and recommended a renal diet or senior dog diet. He won't eat either. I tried doing home cooked, he won't eat it, he has had his spleen out and is recovering well, just prior to surgery his bloods had reduced a bit. I still am having issues with food. He loves taking his meds in cooked sausage, he loves his dental chew, but any other food he picks at and then leaves the bulk of it. I ordered a raw food diet from Hug which can also be cooked and have tried it both ways with him. The first night he ate it, the next meal and every time since he won't. Regarding your recipe, it was difficult because you didn't show what it looked like but if it's mushy he won't touch it. He cannot have rice, soybean or corn as allergic. I am at my wits end!! Recipe For Dogs with Kidney Disease -
    2 cups cooked rice
    3 quarters of cup a dry parsley -- or cup or 1/2 cup of fresh parsley
    2 cups of pureed pumpkin make your own or buy organic all natural pumpkin - puree it (not pumpkin pie mix, it is loaded with sugars... not recommended)
    1 pint of egg whites, bought at store -- 12-15 egg whites. (cook them up)
    (she cooks everything up first, then adds them to the mixture)
    Blender - puree the ingredients for digestibility
    1 large apple
    1 large cooked sweet potato
    1 lb of green beans cooked
    Add Water for blending (1/4 of a cup of water for blending)
    Push things down to blend -- (turn off blender, be careful)
    2 lbs of lean hamburger (add 2/3rds of the hamburger) puree it
    leave 1/3rd of the hamburger out -- add to mixture for texture, later
    (food processor may be better than just a blender... but you can do this in a blender)
    Add last 1/3rd of the hamburger - don't drain it, leave the fat in it -- (for this last 1/3rd)
    Add all ingredients --
    Mix it all together --
    Allow plenty of time to cool -- then serve to dog -
    Can refrigerate this for 5 days --
    Can store in freezer for 6-8 weeks -- quick, efficient --
    Most vets don't recommend a commercial dog food diet -
    This will help reverse kidney disease -

      Yes, or squash. I change up the vegetables each timei cook for my pup so that she receives a well rounded diet. My 10yr old bull terrier was in complete renal failure December 4, 2018 and in 7 weeks her numbers were cut in half! I can't wait to see what her numbers are the next time i take her in! Her homeade food has also cleared up some allergies she had been plagued with.

      @@katpea3641 you said in another reply that you took your dog in for IVs for 2 weeks. Was that daily? What was in the IVs? Hoping my vet will work with me on this.

      @katpea3641 5 років тому

      @@sallypyle8792 i took her in twice a week for two weeks for IV fluids. As far as i know it was just typical IV fluids good luck to you and your pooch! Your vet can also teach you how to do subcutaneous fluids that you can administer at home to keep the vet bills down.

    • @katpea3641
      @katpea3641 5 років тому

      @@sallypyle8792 she is doing great! She will be 11 years old August 17. A bull terrier life span is about 11 years, so I'm grateful for every day that i have with her! I'm not sure if i had mentioned that her kidney failure came from a bladder infection that was not purposely treated, she had taken 2 rounds of antibiotic that were not effective for the strain of bacteria that she had. Her kidney numbers reduced by half and have stayed there but the vet said she has adapted well to her current kidney function.
