He does very well, but when he plays the big chords it sounds wimpy. Trans-Trem might have been a better investment than a bunch of EVH guitars he plays for one song lol.
If memory serves me correct, the trans-trem was often unreliable. Sam said that it was giving Ed hell on the 5150 tour. I would setup a guitar on a stand with a capo like many players do with acoustics and then switch between the two when needed.

@@BenderMohawk Yes, ED said that....If you missed the ratchet lock shift during certain parts of the song you'd be in the wrong key requiring extra modulation. also with the tuning unlike his 5150 Kramer where the Floyd was set down flush with the wood if you broke a string on it with the tuning the whole thing would go WHACKO....(Paul)
Satch is a monster guitarist and a good dude (I’ve met him several times).
Hearing all this criticism of how he plays EVH stuff is silly. EVH is a ‘god’ to me and my favourite guitarist of all time, but trust me, Ed would not play Satch stuff perfectly either.
Let’s celebrate these guys. Ed would be so moved by this. ❤🙏
It just doesn't have the same feel. Satriani is great, but doesn't sound like Eddie. It's more staccato and a bit stiff when he plays it.
I think Van Halen would say “It’s par for the course. More people copying me and trying to make a buck.” I think he would be embarrassed by it.

2nd show of the tour.. Everyone is rusty and no-one knows what Sammy is going to sound like that night, so it takes time to adjust. Sammy needs to lay off the hootch before a show so the rest pf the guys can read him better.. FWIW, Joe worked with Eddie back when Sammy wrote 5150, Eddie couldn't transpose sammy's music to guitar without first doing it on the piano, So Joe helped him and who knows Joe could have written this songs guitar parts.
Not going to sound like EVH. HE is not Eddie, but at least they're trying to give a tribute.

Wow, why does Sammy slow down the tempo so much in this song, if you go back and listen to the 1986 version when they're live, the tempo is so much faster,

This is Ed Van Halen’s music. If he’s not playing it I simply have no interest. I saw him play it live thankfully. That set the bar too high. He was better than everyone said he was when they said he was the greatest. Leave it alone.
