They want to be with you. The more love you give, the more love you get. They are the best. The cruelest thing ever, is putting them in the back yard or being heavy handed. They are gentle and sweet. THE BEST.

I've learned that dobermans can tell time. Crowley will start barking at me at the same times daily at play outside time and bed time. It never fails. He also stares at the front door when it's time for the grandchildren to be dropped off.

Just got my Doberman puppy yesterday! She’s doing so good! I’ve watching almost all of Doberman planet videos and utilizing the training practices and she’s already letting me know when she needs to potty. She slept all night her first night without an accident in her kennel. I’m so proud of her!!! She’s so smart, even though I knew that before getting her, I am still impressed.

    • @rubilove5548
      @rubilove5548 Рік тому

@@sonisam5782 she’s amazing! My big ole snuggle bug. She listens to commands and generally knows what I want from her she just turned one and went through heat at 10 months. Definitely acted out during that time and chewed some things up but doesn’t do that otherwise. She’s cage trained so she’ll sit in her cage if I leave her in there. When she does have accidents in the house (VERY RARELY) she knows she messed up and will put herself in her cage while I clean it up. I take her to the dog park everyday, her recall is really on point. She definitely has A LOT of energy. Since she’s turned one I noticed a huge jump in energy. Usually if I took her to the dog park and played fetch for an hour she’d be done for the rest of the day but now it seems like I need to make time for walk as well. She just turned one last month. She’s very protective but never aggressive. Velcro dog is REAL. When I have class at home, she will literally rest her head on my leg all day or lay right next to me. If I get up to go to the bathroom, she comes with me, if I close the bathroom door she waits right outside of it and waits for me to come out. If you’re thinking about a Doberman, definitely get one. There’s always an immediate kinship when I see someone else with a Doberman we always end up chatting for awhile and just sharing our love for the breed.

    • @rubilove5548
      @rubilove5548 Рік тому

@@sonisam5782 I take her training very seriously, I put her in puppy classes as soon as I could (9 weeks) and had her on them for 3 months. That made a HUGE difference. I would have been completely lost without them and I’m not sure she’d be so well behaved. I can take her into stores and restaurants and she knows how to act. I’ve taken her into my doctors appointment and therapy appointments as well bc she is my service dog. My dobie is around 90 lbs so I feel like i have to very responsible with how she acts. I’m cautious when there’s kids running around. She’s never hurt or jumped on a kid but I’d rather not wait until an accident happens to become cautious of that. Not that I’d think she intentionally hurt them but bc she is so big and heavy even if she jumps on them it could be harmful. But! She doesn’t jump on people usually. It’s really just a precaution. Having a large dog means more responsibility.

I wish I would have watched your channel before I got mine.. not that there is anything wrong with her, she's amazing, there just things I would have done differently..one big thing I would recommend to everyone is make sure you socialize your dog as much as possible. Take them around other people, other dogs, kids, other animals, and continue to do this even when they are fully grown. I think this is key to having a good doberman or possibly having a doberman with issues...I also don't think it's ever you late to teach your dog something new...if you haven't socialized your puppy ...slowly begin to socialize your adult doberman, just be super safe when doing so. They protect you, but it's also your job to protect them :)

So true, I rehomed a European imported doberman 3wks ago that some young couple had decided wasn't for them after paying nearly 3k some twelve weeks earlier.. not house trained, underweight the poor boy didn't even respond to his name..
I already had a 3yr old boxer bitch who is well dialled in....It's only been 3 weeks and the dog Zeus has been making good progress, I'm with the dogs all the time, although there have been some devils spawn moments.. Im up for the challenge knowing the rewards that will be tenfold in the near future..
I always believed boxer dogs were the biggest clowns in the dog world.. I was wrong.. that prize has to go to the doberman.. they really are an amazing breed.

We have two right now and the best advice I can give is to plan on spending lots of time with your Doberman. That time is not spent, it is time invested because they are such a loyal breed that there will come a day when you realize how much your Doberman has added to your life ( lots of time spent training to receive ten-fold the love returned).

I’ve had two rescues. One came from neglect and one from neglect and abuse. Be patient, it may take time but once they feel comfortable and confident again and know they can trust you, it’s a whole new ballgame. I have never raised one from a pup but that time might come at some point and I will follow the same advice.

Heard a rule of thumb from another doberman owner that mental exercise is 4x more effective than physical towards keeping a doberman happy all day! 15 mins of a treat puzzle vs 1 hour walk... I try to keep this in mind as we used to just walk/run our doberman 4+ miles per day to achieve the same result

I've had dobermans for 45 yrs! I'm always bringing in other dogs, big and small because I rescue and find dogs in the streets. Thats actually how I get all my dogs, from shelters or find them in the streets. YES, EVEN MY DOBES!!! Socialize, socialize, socialize. Did I mention SOCIALIZE????? Also, do not punish your dogs! Same thing with your human kids. Don't punish, TEACH.
I am with mine 24/7. Thats the way they like it. (I do too).

I have 3 of these beautiful dogs and love them all. So well behaved and devoted. I can leave them alone in the house for hours with food on the counter and they won't touch it. I have an 80 acre horse ranch in the mountains so there is never a lack of things to give them exercise or new challenges. They know who belongs here and who doesn't...they love the horses and cats and ignore the chickens but if a ground squirrel or anything crosses their paths that don't belong...they go to work.

Great vid. Dobermans are the original Velcro dogs. Have had 2 over the past 2 decades. And they are great with kids. Affectionate, Naturally protective and fiercely loyal.
I would advise against getting a Doberman if you plan on leaving him/her alone in an apartment. You need someone at home or get daycare. Dobbies do have issues of separation anxiety.

    • @Flexb123

They will adjust, some slower than others and some quickly. I had my last Dobe for a few years before I was forced to move to a 1 bedroom with her. The first week we got some complaints about her barking (while we left for work for 8 hours) but just wrote everyone on the floor a note to let them know this was new for her and was adjusting and that we were taking measures to fix the barking. After that she was fine, got her out 3-4 times a day to run and walk, which is VITAL if you're living in apartment. We were there for 4-5 years before getting her back into a house with us. She's the dobe in my avatar, lived to 13.

Over the past 50 years I've been an owner of Dobermans as rescues and one as my own baby pup I raised myself. Everything in this video is so true. But please imagine Dobies need,, of exercise, attention, training (plus food, water, vet visits). These are all things you can work creatively into your lifestyle, if you think about it. Dobies love to run, yes! When my pup was old enough, I'd have her run alongside my and my horse to short trail rides. I'd take her to my classes at college. Nor one prof objected. Times have changed. maybe, but think creatively on how you can socialize, exercise and involve your Dobie into your life. Dobies take on your life. so take then into yours. The people in your life would be bedazzled!

This is especially key when they are going through their hormonal teenage stage (as my little guy is). i agree with everything here. one particular thing that stuck out to me is when you said some lines require more/less exercise. my 1yr old pup is perfectly happy with 45 minutes of exercise on hot days. i got him from a breeder that has focused on breeding calm, pet-ish dobermans (i know i know, save your effort people). he does require quite a bit of mental stimulation though. he's with me 24 hours a day and i find myself "testing" him and teaching him new commands all through the day (i have breaks throughout my work day where i just like to work him). and the socialization...that was the best thing i ever did for my pup. ever since he finished his immunizations, i took him to work with me every single day. there are always new people, new sounds, new smells, new environments. he's suuuper gentle and people friendly

  • @professor2771

I've had five Dobies over the past 43 years (with a long break from 1986 to October 2020, when I got Guinness here in Korea), and they are the only breed for me. From childhood our family has had many different breeds, but started with the Doberman when I was in high School back in Concord, California in 1974: our first dogs were an Akita and a Dachshund when I was born and lived in Japan from 1957 to '61. Though I love all dogs and have trained several Labrador and Golden Retrievers, and I do love the Retrievers, I would never have any other dog unless I had at least one or two Dobies in the house. Unfortunately, living in an apartment in Korea limits me to one, so I must wait until retiring next year and moving back to American before considering more. And John, just yesterday I watched your video of the Dog Mountain Rescue, and I would love to visit there in the future to get a couple and give them a good, loving home, which they deserve. My retirement dream is actually to work at or own a dog (preferably for Dobies) rescue center. I know I droned on, so to get to the point of my writing is advice: my number one advice is, if you want a Doberman, make sure you can afford them more than just a "hours" of walks. They definitely need to exert themselves to exhaustion. Since Guinness lives in an apartment, I take him out for his poop and at least 45 minutes when we first wake up and another at 7:30 p.m., same length and then some shorter training walks throughout the day, we normally get to the dog park and a friend's cattle farm three to four times a week, and it is just not enough, and the biggest problem here is we are currently in the monsoon season (constant rain and Guinness does not like being in the rain), so we have to walk in the basement car parking lot. As John said, Dobie owners can go on and on about their dogs, and I would love to do so about Guinness, who BTW just turned 10 months yesterday (the 1st). Enjoy your Dobies everyone.

🤣❤️yes, the attention tip LOL I cuddle with my girl every night while watching TV, if I don’t … she gets pesty. Big ass 80lb baby 😍 Karma was my first ever dog and she was the best decision I ever made. It’s been an intense journey, but I’m so proud of who she’s become (WITH LOTS OF HARD WORK AND TLC OF COURSE). Doberman’s are also extremely adaptable to their environment and a lot of people don’t realize that. I live in smaller Toronto condo (850sqft) and my dog is so well behaved. Why?… Because I keep her very well exercised and disciplined. MY MAIN TIP TO ANYONE WANTING A DOBERMAN: I believe that a lazy person CANNOT own a Doberman. I’m sorry to say. I know it all seems like fun and games lol but its difficult. The breed is very high energy (crack of dawn wake up calls and 2-4 walks a day if you don’t have a yard), the breed is stubborn and extremely intelligent so if you are lazy, they find new ways to disobey you and outsmart you. Lastly, they have strong and dominant personalities and I believe if they sense that you can’t control them, they will control you 😉

Find your pups favourite toy and only use that for outdoor exercise and training. When Nyx sees me pull out her blue and orange chuckit, she knows exactly what's coming. When the game/training is over that toy gets taken and placed out of sight. Also, she's not allowed to walk home with that toy in her mouth.
    Cheers

We just put a down payment for our newest addition💜 Thanks to your videos we looked into more information with the breeders and the health of the parents. You really can’t guarantee the length of life you will get from your pet, but losing Brooke so early in her life taught us some lessens.

    Trifecta !
Back - to Back - to Back great videos, John!
I mark my Sundays by your Doberman videos!
My advice is to think carefully before you commit yourself to a Doberman.
Just today, I was thinking how I finally got Vladimir Putin to where I want him, after 4 years! Then I took him to a gas station and he got of the leash, and came inside the store, looking for me! But he didn't go out in traffic, or drift off.
And find as good a breeder as possible. I live in Mississippi and I found a breeder in N.J. He was kind enough to ship him to me at 8 weeks old. I told him what I needed a dog for, and he sent me a gangster! At 7 months old he lunged at a violent drug dealer who was laying in wait for me!
    He hasn't been aggressive since!
I could have a calmer Doberman if I neutered him, like so many people do, but then, how could I call him my friend? Besides, on a utility level, taking his boys, could slow him down a fraction - enough time for a bad guy to get the better of a situation!

Agree on everything. Dobies need a diverse life for best social interaction. I'm fortunate to have my Daisy 24/7 with me. She is a shop pup and has a ton of random clients, delivery driver's, and salespeople coming in and out. One thing I do on weekend's is to do the dog park/field thing. Ball throwing and training reinforcement. We might go to 2 to 3 places to visit. Dobies are conversation magnets. Hanging out with people or passer byes are a positive way to talk about the breed. I do use a training collar when in public. Daisy loves everyone and small children. Other dogs? What we're working one. I never ever have to use the correction mode. Just me putting around her neck.,.she understands to behave. Dobermans are highly superior in intelligence. Super sensitive so you almost need to treat them as humans. Funny. They are so smart you almost forget they are dogs. They will be you're best friend and companion. I would have a whole pack of these beautiful animals if only the energy they require. If you are thinking of getting a dobie... helpful tip. Try a find a good family or person who already has one. It has helped me for sure. Dobermans are very particular and have a play style that looks different when playing with other breeds. Good luck and please don't commit to that dog without considering all that comes with ownership.

Our dobie died of a liver disease called hepatitis. This was due to the grain-free food we were giving her which we were told by so many that was the best food to give our dog. This turned out to be false, in fact, all the vets I took her too when she started having problems ALL told me to stay away from grain-free dog food. Stick to Science Diet, Purina, or any other name brand was their advice. She was the ABSOLUTE BEST DOG IVE EVER HAD!!! And watching Arlo, there playing and being cute reminds me so much of our sweet girl. Man. I miss her. Great with kids too

If I may, I would like to ask your advice. I’ve been informing me on Dobermanns now for over a year as I am interested in getting one. I’ve had a Malinois and a cross between a German Shepherd and a border collie before. Covid and lockdown has led people to buy dogs and as the restrictions are being eased these lockdown dogs are now being dumped. I’ve looked at websites from rescue centres and found some 1-year old Dobermanns waiting for a new owner to come by. May I ask your advice/thoughts on so-called rescue Dobermanns. I assume they’re not properly trained etc. What would you recommend? I hope my question here makes sense.

I volunteer for a Doberman rescue and have rescued five over the years. IMO, a rescue dog will bond with their new owner extremely tightly. Don't worry about that part!! Dogs seem to go through a process when coming into a new home. They are trying to figure out the new rules and to see if they are safe and if they are loved. Likely they will be on best behavior for a period of time, sometimes months. Once they do relax into the new situation, then you really see what they are all about. Everything John talks about in this video apply equally well to rescued dogs! Just understand that patience, love, consistency and more love will help you and your rescue dog do well together. A good breed rescue will have had the dog in a foster home and can give you a good head start on what to expect. Of course, just a guideline, as the dog will be reserved for a period of time. But, you can get some information on compatibility with other animals, leash walking, housebroken or not, and many traits if you adopt from a good rescue. And, if I could add one other thought. Don't overlook senior dogs (age 7 and above). There is quite a special bond when you give a senior dog a second chance on life! They seem to know they've hit the jackpot and they will love you like you can't imagine! That's been my experience.

I am looking to get a dobberman as my first dog so I have been doing some research and I see lots of them with clipped tails and clipped ears or tape on the ears.
Is this something necessary for just a family dog or just the working ones?
And would it be good/safe to train it as a puppy then when it is abit older get it guard dog training or do the guard dog training from the beginning.
And would it be bad for the dog if it was left at home from just and example 8:30 am - 3:30 pm but keeping a good routine like 30 mins of activity in the morning then another hour when I would get home.
Sorry alot of questions but much very appreciated if answered

My advice is as much as you put into this breed is what you will get out of it. If ask yourself what can I do to make this dog the best dog and give them the life he/she needs instead of what can this dog do for me? You will get it back 10 fold. Granted this breed is outstandingly beautiful. BUT if you arent willing or able to give them what they need for their mind and body, you are gonna have a hard road ahead and maybe this breed isnt for you. I have rescued and rehabilitated multiple Dobermans that have been surrendered with aggression issues, possessiveness, fear, anti social, and depression that do a 360° as soon as their needs are met and become the best dog on the block. A true example of how amazing this breed is. I currently have an 8 year old that was surrendered 8 months ago with ALL the problems and warning labels you could put on a Doberman including having no clue how to walk on a leash. Today she walks off leash, is social, driven, obedient, had a plethora of tricks in her back pocket and is the best example of an American Doberman. As you said be an advocate for this breed by showcasing exactly how epic they can be. And that means being self sacrificing of your time and energy. But I tell you, IT IS WORTH IT.
