There are some major downsides that are important to know (as well as some very positive upsides too)! So in this video, we're running through the pros and cons of adopting a Doberman versus buying one from a breeder. We'll talk about things like habits, behaviors, the dog's history, and other potential limitations when you adopt instead of seeking out a puppy from a breeder. I’m lucky enough to rescue two Dobermans at their puppy stage. Guess this will be the only breed I raise for the rest of my life. This breed is intelligent, loyal and sweet. Hard to look at breed other than this ^_^

My first Doberman, Karl, was a rescue. He was a blue, 19 months old, and had been abandoned somewhere in West Texas weeks or months earlier. His tail was docked and his ears had been trimmed but not posted (a very endearing look for him). He was emaciated and sick and bonded with me immediately. Now that I know so much more about the breed (thanks to you, John), it’s clear he was not socialized properly, had received little to no training, and had just been rescued by someone - me - who was unprepared to deal with all of these things. Nevertheless, I gave him a good home and we were the best of friends. It broke my heart to lose him a year ago - probably due to a brain tumor, but he had also just been diagnosed with DCM.
Karl is the reason I fell in love with the Doberman breed and I’m going to honor his legacy by purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder and raising him the right way - the way that Karl was denied. All this to say: whether you adopt or buy, learn about the breed first, be prepared, and give the dog your best. They deserve it.

I’m on my third month with my three year old Doberman rescue. He is my first dobbie , and is the smartest dog I have ever had or worked with. Our first month was spent with each of us trying to outthink the other so that we could get our way. Super frustrating! But consistency has been key. His progress in just a couple months is worth all the work.

I have rescued boxers but not a doberman...yet. I did get a doberman puppy from a reputable breeder so I could understand dobermans before I embark on the rescue track. I love rescues, but I felt strongly that I needed experience with the breed standard to be able to help a rescue get there. I would like to do both

My first Doberman was rescued @ 4 years old. I fell in love with the breed after falling in love with him ❤ He passed away with DCM at 11 years old in 2017. I still miss him every day. I purchased a Doberman puppy this past March and brought him home at 8 weeks old, so he's now 6 1/2 month old. I think we find the right dog for us as long as we are careful and responsible and know that it's a commitment for the rest of their life. For me, Dobermans are the perfect dog and you can find the right one through a rescue or through a breeder, or both!

I've had both. These days I'd prefer to rescue, too many back yard breeders have polluted the blood line, leaving too many -inferior dogs with good traits. Most people want the stigma of being a Doberman owner but are clueless to what that means and eventually, you have an abandoned young adult or an adult that has never been worked with. And working is the key with having a Doberman.

I'm with my 3rd Dobie now, got my first in 1996 from a breeder. He was awesome. After he passed I got another puppy from a breeder in 2008. He was also incredible. After he passed I got a youngster of 1 year of age from a Doberman rescue. He was very loved, just got to be too much for his older single woman owner to handle. He is amazing, honestly the best temperament of all 3 I've now had. He was potty trained, knows all basic commands and has no triggers that cause him to be unstable. His ears were cropped and stand beautifully. He was NOT neutered but the rescue handled that and a microchip being put in. I was looking for puppies right before going to the rescue and the prices were astronomical. Wound up getting our boy for $250. There are so many dogs in need of homes and a reputable rescue will do their best to match you up with a dog that will hopefully go to their forever home in an appropriate situation, circumstance and people who will be in the household. Our rescue will take back any adopted dog at any time in the future for ANY reason at all. An exchange or refund is a choice for any adopter. They spent time asking me questions and determining what dogs they had that would be a good fit. At first they didn't have any, so I waited. Then I got a call, they had just received a youngster who just got too big for his owner. She loved him and drove 8 hours from Northern California to Southern California to get him to the rescue instead of ditching him at a local pound. Thanks to her love I got such an amazing and stunningly beautiful young boy. He is a wonderful pal to my 14 year old female Min Pin. He's really good with her.
I can honestly say that anybody looking for a new companion should really give a rescue a chance.

Both options have pros and cons, but I’m a big advocate for rescuing. While there are a lot of adult dogs that have lost their homes (for various reasons that aren’t their fault), it’s also very common with larger dogs to give them up “once they get big”…It’s incredibly frustrating.
With my Doberman, Crowley, that meant I got a six month old dog that was 40 pounds. But was also a puppy. Yes, adopting between 4-6 months, you have to skip puppy breath and the terminal cuteness but you also get a dog that’s not as prone to potty accidents and still in that ‘learning about the world” period.
Just my experience but future Doberman owners should definitely consider adopting - too many great dogs waste away in shelters.

Back in Jan just before covid spiked I rescued a young Blue female who was being used as just a puppy maker. She was much to young and bread fare to often in her young life so I can imagine the other aspects of her life were less great. When we first brought her home she immediately bonded with our male Doberman however we had a number of challenges with her. First she just destroyed our backyard with digging even to the extent that she would dig under the fence and escape. Second she loved to be out side at 2am and 3am barking at whatever critters might be lurking around the neighborhood and not to mention she had 0 indoor manors because we don't believe she was ever allowed inside a house. However after a few months of working with her she got the hang of it. It took work possible even more then say getting a pup and training it yourself. However she is 100% worth it. She is in her forever home with us.

I agree with everything you said. We rescued our first doberman a year ago this week. She is a beautiful six year old blue female that was dumped by a puppy mill. She has been the perfect dog very friendly, calm and loves to play. I have never had a dog that has such a specific daily routine. She will let you know everything from meal time to bed time and it is all about her, that is fine she had a rough five years and now she can live her life loved by our family.

If you are an experienced dog owner, have more than one dog and have kept Dobermans before, you could attempt a rescue.
Else stick to buying a Doberman pup and raise it.
And I have raised & reared 2 Doberman dogs from puppyhood over the past 30 yrs ( Both lived about 12 yrs and I mourned about 4 yrs for each!)
They are the BESTEST dogs on this planet, exemplifying the qualities of Love, Loyalty and Fearlessness that you expect from a dog.

That's a great bit of advice, thanks. I'm a first time dog owner and have a complex history with dogs, so will definitely be opting for a puppy to start with. My life was saved by a family Irish/Red Setter when I was 3 but was mauled by a German Shepherd when I was 4. She didn't like children. I was extremely frightened of all guard dog breeds until I met my friend's sister's 2 year old male Dobermann about 10 years ago. I was so fearful but he immediately just jumped on my lap and demanded a cuddle! He was so loving and gentle. He stayed on my lap the whole time and I had numb thighs! My perception of Dobermanns completely changed, I fell in love with him and the breed. ❤️

I rescued my dobe - He is just over a year old & I was told that he was part german shepherd which was the breed I was orignally out to adopt. Then on the meet & greet - I knew instantly that he wasn't a shepherd & they said that they could be wrong & that he was part hound...well...no...he is a dobe with natural ears and tail. But I was so please with our meet and greet that he didn't have any senstive touch spots - And I was able to touch him with out him flinching from nose to tail. He knew a few basic commands...but those eyes...I fell in love with him - Now I have grand kids & he LOVES them as though he knew them since birth! I have zero issues with this boy...other than him chewing on an occasional shoe or slipper (DONT LEAVE THEM OUT WHERE HE CAN GET TO THEM) This dog protects his home & when in the car...great on walks - I can't believe anyone ever gave this sweet boy up.

Thanks for covering the cons. Rescuing is amazing, but it's not amazing if you don't have enough experience, time, or resources to handle potential trauma or special needs. More potential owners need to be aware of this for any rescue because it's simply the reality of the situation. It's not shameful to want to prevent needing to rehome a dog again, nor to admit you need to be more certain of a dog's temperment and history for other reasons. Adopting is fantastic if you can do it, but even if you adopt a mixed breed puppy, you may end up with one as smart as a border collie when that's not what you were prepared for. For a first time dog owner, that can be incredibly overwhelming. We should really promote informed decision making rather than an adoption only perspective.

  • @wolfprowler
    @wolfprowler 2 роки тому +16

    Lots of valid points John.
Another pro to a rescue is they may already be spayed/neutered.... hopefully you didn't mention that lol
We opted for a puppy from our breeder because we had an older dog and we needed to make sure we could acclamate a new puppy to our crazy lifestyle as long haul truckers. Getting a dog that already hated rides, motion, loud sounds etc wouldn't have been fair to the rescue if they had to be brought back.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  2 роки тому

That's a good point about spaying/neutering, Joshua! Definitely goes into those costs that you'll have less of. Thanks for sharing your reasoning with us as to why you decided to get a puppy from a breeder, too!

I am afraid I have to disagree on the Breed only adoptions. I have tried this twice, and it turned into the biggest nightmare, and both times, I ended going to a breeder. Both of the rescues were scam's. I passed both application processes, but the rescues were a pain. The first one was a bait and switch env. the second one, is I went and selected a dog, with the rep, and went and visited the doc twice, and they decided to give the dog to another family. The first visit I didn't even know there were other family's in the mix. So I have ended up getting a puppy from a breeder. Just be warned that rescues can be a nightmare because of the people running them :(

Had a doberman under a year old and picked up a 7 year old doberman as a rescue. Seems like training has regressed but is super sweet and mellow with enough energy to take some out of the puppy. I was worried when I first met them at the kennel as it was non stop barking at anyone and everyone. As soon as they were outside they relaxed and became incredibly loving. I feel super lucky on this find and am glad I took the chance on them! I could handle another puppy at the moment. Outstanding to see the differences and similarities even with the difference. I am nervous about the same sex aggression and the dominance. Just glad the pup and her are about the same size. The pup is a bit bigger and is a bit if a push over at the moment. The old Dobie was recently spayed so I am hoping that helps with everything rolling over smoothly.

It is nice knowing the background & details of a purebred & getting to see its parents tho. I've had great dogs from either option but I stress it's all about the time & effort you put in to that dog wether rescue or purebred

My husband and I have always adopted large breed adult dogs. Our last Doberman R.I.P was 6 years old when we adopted her. She was such a sweet girl. I will say that she was very destructive. We think her old owners teased or "played" her with a flashlight or laser pointer. Whenever sunlight filtered through our windows, she would obsessively lick, dig and bite whatever it shined on. Such as carpet, hardwood floors, moulding around doors and the deck. It was very sad. She would get so stressed out, she would pant hard and shake. We had our beloved Grimace for 8 years. She died 2 years ago in February at 14 years old. She was such a wonderful dog otherwise. 2 years ago we adopted Penny Lane from MN Doberman rescue (we got Grimace there as well). Penny was a 1 year old stray. She definitely had some behavior problems when we first got her. She was extremely shy/fearful.
With lots of patience, love and training she is now a terrific dog. She is our 5th dog since 1994. She is by far the easiest dog I've ever trained. She learned "drop it and leave it " in TWO hours! She learned "stay in the yard " within 2 days. We have a fenced in yard but we always train dogs to stay in yard in case the gate is left open. We will never NOT have a Doberman....and ALWAYS an adult rescue. My husband and I are really good training dogs. We make sure to ask about any behavior problems before adopting. So far the behavioral problems have been issues we know how to handle.

When it was time to come home with us she had a very nervous ride. It took about 3 days for her to calm down n mentally move in. She has been with us for 4 months n is so living n happy. She still has problems understanding about out cat so we r very careful. She loves her new daddy n mommy n sister plus she has a new best friend in our daughters Australian Shepherd Apollo. She is the perfect addition to our family.

Another great topic covered John, every single Dobe I've had has been either a rescue or a rehome.
Alot of these unfortunately come with some issues( found that they are usually put up for rehoming at 18mth when they test the boundaries especially if there has been a lack of consistency. Some also take a wee bit longer to settle .....that said once they have they are awesome!!!! Even the ones I've had to retro socialise or work for months to deal with historic issues.
I wouldn't have swapped any of them (including my current ones)😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

My biggest risk in rescue is always health reasons. I have rescued three dogs in my lifetime which luckily has turned out really well. Initially they came with minor health problems. My two Doberman I have bought. Again so I can research the breeders history because Dobermans can come with major health issues. The other breeds Rottie , lab, am bulldog, mixed breeds I rescued. Rescind is a great thing. With certain breed I would rather research and purchase

I rescued both of mine from local shelters. My Male was my first Doberman and first rescue. I couldn't ask for a better dog. I can't believe his previous owners didn't come looking for him.
My second doberman I rescued as a friend for my other. The vet and I both suspect she was a puppy mill breeder. While young she appears to have had quite a few litters. She also still has floppy ears a long tail and a few noticeable scars. She scts somewhat timid for a Doberman. Still she's a sweetheart and loves to wake me with a wet nose every morning and plays well with my Male.
I'm not anti breeder. I just dont have time for a puppy at this time in my life. I've had several Boxers I got as puppies and raised a couple litters.
If you're rescuing a dog they can still be awesome just spend time with the individual dog and trust your instincts about the dogs personality. Don't just fall in love with the dog because its the right breed.

At his age now, he has come down with the dreaded heart disease some Dobermans get. Lucky medication is helping tremendously. After having Dutch, I will always have Dobermans in my life. I'm hooked on this beautiful breed of dogs. They're so awesome!

I rescued my 2yo Male a few weeks ago, what a big baby. Full ears and tail (and nuts). Very aggressive to non-family, which goes away each and every day. The first few weeks, he wasn't sure what was going on. He always protected me, but was aggressive to others. He's become such a sweetheart, fixed last week. He's scratched me in play, not out of anger, he just doesn't know how strong he is. Every day is better, and he's become such a good boy. Rescue then you can. Getting him fixed cost a fortune, those low cost places won't touch a dog this size.

He's now a year and 4 months and he loves people and other dogs, he knows what his toys are and whats not. He knows a lot of basic commands. He loves car rides and splashing in the lake or creek. Im working with him off leash while we're on trails. Everybody just loves my dog. And whatever he is mixed with made him so cute. He looks very doberman but he has his ears and tail. I would have liked to rescue but as the first con said, it is risky, they are a big dog and I have a little brother and other small animals so my mom was more wary about older adoptable dobies, I would also worry about health and age haha I don't think I would be able to handle if the Dobie left us within a year. Hates land squirrels, but chases off intruder animals (especially wild ones; she scared off a fully grown doe to protect me as she was RIGHT in front of us after walking up to us).
