GOD EATER 3 - Dealing With Devour Attacks

- Dealing with Ash Aragami Devour Attacks in God Eater 3.
Devour Attacks are unblockable unless you Perfect Guard and you cannot interrupt them by using traps or stun grenades. You also cannot break any Aragami parts during their devour attack so you're forced to deal with these attacks in some way and they can be a bit a troublesome if you don't know how.
This video has a lot of information so it'll be jarring on the first watch so I want you to watch it multiple times until you understand how to deal with every devour in a way that's comfortable for you. Look carefully at exactly what I do in every clip and practice it for yourself.
Since dealing with devours is ultimately something you're gonna have to practice for yourself, I really cannot give any more advice to you beyond what I said in this video. I can't tell you how to get better with timing Just Guards; you just have to dedicate yourself to practicing it.

The first way to deal with a devour is to recognize what it looks like when it starts. Get a mental image of all the Aragami's poses when they start their devour attack or do whatever you need to to understand how the attack looks on startup and get ready to do something about it.
Since the Devour Attack is an Enraged Mode Only attack, Ash Aragami usually go directly into their Devour attack as soon as they get enraged. Use this to know when you need to be wary of it.
If you're playing in a team, look at who the Aragami faces when it starts the attack. That will be the target player and the main person who needs to deal with the devour attack.
Its also a misconception that you NEED a Buckler to Perfect Guard devours. It can be done with all shields consistently as long as you know the timing it takes to put up your shield. All of these devour attacks function in a way where there's a clear startup of the attack and nothing hits you for a good while until the devour attack actually comes out. This means that you can relax and time you block properly no matter what shield type you have.
The only thing is that its easier to time a Perfect Guard with a Buckler because its faster.
I highly recommend learning the Dive timing for Perfect Guards if you either switch shields a lot, or you use a Tower and aren't comfortable with Perfect Guarding. The Dive timing is the same across all shields unless you use a certain Burst Plugin.
For Balmung, I forgot to add that the tactic where you run along the lines works best in narrow spaces only if you make him face a wall when he starts his devour. You can do this by putting your back to a wall with him in front of you when you suspect he is going to start his devour.
Also, the Dromi's Circle Running method is very tricky and sometimes he activates his power steering right out of the gate depending on where you're standing. This method really isn't recommended but its worth knowing about so be ultra careful when you use it.
That's all.
Oof, I actually had three times the amount of stuff recorded and cut so much during editing.
Like, I had making Nuadha whiff the first part of his Devour and then when he starts the second part, you Dive into it. I had a lot of that kind of redundant stuff and it would have made the video longer than it needed to be. So I cut a lot out and only kept the easiest and most reliable methods.
The point I'm making is that there's a lot of things you can do to when you're dealing with devours and I really encourage everyone to find their own ways of doing so.

This may be a game, but its not just something you play.
If the Aragami enters Burst mode, you can reduce its Burst duration by devouring it.
According to the Strategy Guide, the average Burst Duration is about 60sec. A Charge Devour reduces the duration by 10sec and Quick/Air devours reduce it by 3sec. (As always, take the Strategy Guide's text with a grain of salt)
Oh that would have been nice to know in the database.
@@JamesTheTurnbull I heard the developers say it in a stream many months back. Its also in the Strategy Guide.
that seems cool, altough if you spam devour its too Op
Why is stuff like this omitted from the database though? :/
theres no point in doing this since they become easier to break and stun then you just spam for aerial attack for faster kill. if your so afraid of aragami burst mode then just make sure you have autoblock skill and have your teammates taunt skill
BK: "there is no more room to STEER"
Dromi: *powerslides in to the corner*
BK: "NANI?!"
Haha xD
The "perform cheeky devour" on anubis got me omg my sides
Aragami doriftoo??!!
When avoiding Dromi's devour attack it's always,RUN FOR YOUR LIVES AND DON'T LOOK BACK!!
That's how he always ends up Biting me when I'm not even fighting him! orz
My teammates always run away and he's like "Oh. This guy doesn't know I'm here. Let me munch him"
@@bkbrent well next time I fight him I'll just charge him with the dive.
For some reason, the dromi always seem to target Zeke whenever I have him on my team, yet I never put the 'taunt' skill in him lmao
Also, when an Aragami enters Burst, a small 'Core' appears on its body. Its a tiny spot on its body that serves as an ultra weakpoint with 0 resistance.
Ra: The spot where his crossed legs meet.
Nuadha: Top of his beer belly
Balmung: Forehead
Anubis: Middle of chest
Dromi: Neck
You can do a lot of damage if you target these Cores.
So even if you get devoured and the Aragami enters Burst mode, devour it back to reduce its duration or aim for this spot to deal lots of damage.
I never knew about that wow thanks for the info :)
Is it just me, or does it seem like Nuadha's big yellow arm in burst mode is weak to the ray gun's beams?
@@FlawedIntellect not sure never really shot his arm that much
I always hit Nuadha’s left arm. I thought that’s its weakest point. I’ve never known that when you devour the boss, its duration reduce. Thanks alot.
Question does just guarding also work with auto guard ?
How to counter Dromi: Dive into it's mouth.
That sounded insane until I saw the vid. Didn't think it'd be THAT simple XD
Timing and Lock-on is key.
@@bkbrent worth expanding on. The timing for dive is right when your shield fully deploys in the dive. If you hit the straight vector of the dive you did it too early and if you are still in the upward curve too late
Aragami literally known for eating AGEs.
Diving into its mouth is the best counter?!?
Now I ll finally stop to be that noob that gets devoured in a team of 8 people.
SAME
@@kohai7508 The boss entering burst can actually help if someone has a sniper rifle and good aim, to hit that core that is only visible in burst mode.
Seems like the best answer is always Just Guarding which I have never done once. I need to get better at Just Guards
Dromi had devoured something from Initial D
Driftmi
Thanks for making this devour guide! Glad to see the many ways to handle them all. All of your videos have been really helpful to me.
To supplement the Anubis 2-part Devour: Anubis can't do a complete 180 degrees for the 2nd Devour charge/crawl. Stand in the position that Anubis originally stood on to be safe from the 2nd part.
As for the blooper: DROMI, WTF?!
I call that Power Steering.
@@bkbrent Dromi's "power steering" keeps kicking in almost all the time when I try to fight him. (Though I'm playing on PC.) It's pretty annoying. I still have yet to get the dive attack timing down.
Thanks for the tip BK. And that circle running part is kinda funny😂
even i'm ready to guard dromi's devour,he just passes me away and chasing hugo xD
Lucky. Dromi always comes straight for me (
Wow, you're really good at this. I thought the only way to stop this is by just guarding. I'm amazed on how you stopped it by doing diving. That's insane!
This video is SO helpful. I've been so frustrated with trying to properly avoid these damn attacks.
Funny enough, I learned about the circle method against the Dromi the first time I fought it in the main story.
It was locked onto me and I panicked, then my mom talked to me. I looked away and tilted the analog stick, and somehow I did not get eaten that entire conversation XD
Such luck
Man your videos are so nice and useful!
Dammit... Thank you for all!
This will be super useful for that last and hardest "armament" throphy farm Thank you!
my very own unique technique

>spam dive
Nice video! did't know they could even be blocked!
time to practice those Perfect guard.
Great vid! Ever since I saw your ash aragami runs where you perfect guard their devour attacks I've been trying it too. Honestly works much better than trying to run away from it/evade it, especially Dromi's and Nuadha's.
Thanks for watching!
Hope the tips help and you are able to consistently stop the devours.
Ok yes helpful, didnt know about the zero resist weakpoint either. Thanks for this one
Description on AGE eaters Just guard method made me laugh xD and very useful video thanks you will help me a lot
Thanks alot! I NEED THIS! LITERALLY!
Dromi must be ate some random ae86 to get that "power-steering" skill.
anyway thanks for the tips, bos. Much appreciated,
Had no idea Nuadah did the 2nd jump if you were too far away. That part always got me when I was first trying to mostly dodge devour attacks and not PG them. Thanks for the video, I learned something new about some of these jerks. Lol
One thing I noticed although I'm not sure of it, is that if you block a devour attack one or two times, the aragami will like, get mad and start spamming the devour until it works.
I actually learned to just guard their devour attacks by playing assault missions. Good practice
thanks for the hardwork!
"Then do a cheeky devour"
Goddamnit.
Off-topic, but I like how most Ashborn prefer different approaches to their devours.
That's good design imo (although Devour's rate gonna be decreased).
Dromi's my favorite, it's almost surreal that to be safe you have to dive STRAIGHT into his gaping mouth!
PS: Thanks for this, btw.
I like all the Ash Aragami! (Not Dromi)
I do think the Devour attack frequency is a bit much as it is now though. Especially Balmung. That guy just does it back to back no matter how many times you stop him.
@@bkbrent I agree, but I just hope they won't nerf it to the point of Ashborns doing it just once a mission... Would kinda make learning timings less useful, I fear. If they had more life, than sure, but...
Wish you could stop Balmung somehow (other than JG I mean)! I mean, if you place a trap on the ground for example, he just slides over it and doesn't give a damn, ha.
Ye, Dromi's a cunt at times. I do like the design idea behind it, it's just... Not my favorite to fight, let's say that.
Btw, any idea on the name of the Adaptive Aragami subspecies for the updates? For now we know that the Ra-subspecies is called "Amon-Ra". I personally think the Nuadha-subspecies might be called "Tyr" (fitting since they both are Gods of War, both lost an arm, Tyr even lost it to Fenrir).
The rest is more difficult tbh.
Maybe "Gram" for Balmung? (Meh)
Anubis... Err... "Seth"? (Mehx2)
No idea for Dromi, Gleipnir is already in the game and the first chain of Fenrir has a very tongue-twisting name so I doubt it will be used.
@@heroofkokoto4707 maybe Cerberus or Orthrus for the Dromi subspecies?
@@zakeeros1663 Y'know, you may be actually onto something there. I was so focused on the "chain" aspect of Dromi, that I forgot that it is also a three-headed hellhound -little spawn-of-satan alligator.-
But... Uhm. I think Orochi in GE2RB had its materials with the "Cerberus" denomination to them? If I'm not mistaken?
Still, they could totally not care and do it regardless, I wouldn't rule it out just yet. It's not like Orochi is in GE3 anyways for now...?!

BK Brent That’s why I’m kinda lazy to deflect its devour attack. With Balmung, I just feel like it never stops. I’m getting used to deal with them when they are in burst mode already. Haha
Thank you for this blessing of a video ;-;
Thank you SO MUCH for making a guide on this stuff! I only just recently discovered how to dodge Ra's attack and was wondering how to deal with Nuadha's. Anubis's looks easy to deal with, so, I won't sweat him when I get to him, but, Dromi ESPECIALLY looks like a pain to deal with.
Very helpful, thank you! ❤
tnx for this ... gonna get ready for twilight of the hounds mission
Finally, thank you so much. Now I shall hunt like a pro. Bless you BK. That jojoke at the end tho lmao 😂.
Tip for nuadha, you can listen carefully to his jumps and dive away in one direction to ensure an evasion. Also, anubis can be evaded by diving towards any random direction right when anubis starts to dash, don't wait until he turns, you might not make it.
was hoping you make this video because i'm still having problems with devour attacks, especially Nuadha's attack
Hope it helps
BK Brent it helps A LOT, i didn’t know that we could dive or evade at devour attacks, usually, i just ran as far away as i could
Same here I just ran away each time
mie syddin in some maps, you can just hide behind a giant obstacle (e.g a rock) and Nuadha just perform its devour attack right in front of you on the other side of the obstacle and you don’t even need to run
JG, my favorite way of dealing with this devour bullcarp, makes you look heroic too.
Which makes Defensive my Favorite skill. Easier JG, can even block even when not facing forward
This is very helpful I just started the solo missions, and need to practice up on this.
Good luck.
Sankyu BK senpai
I've been playing the game the wrong way lol. This looks badass.
just guard is so useful especially as training for using busterblade shield counter
i usually use a "Dive JG" cuz I have a tower shield. works pretty much the same. (except for solgaleo, his dev atk is EZ to JG normally on a tower) This def puts some insight on things...I need more content on this game P-P
amazing great tuto thanks!!
A 4 year old video might just save m3 rn thank you so much bro
To sum things up, I just wanted to add up something about Balmung Regalia.
So using a ledge will not work since it has the ability to get to the higher ground (the high ground won’t save you anymore) but this can be countered in three ways:
-The lower ground (also try to stay very close to a ledge). This can avoid the devour attack entirely without moving an inch since Balmung Regalia won’t jump on you when you’re at the lower ground for its first five moves. As for the last move, it can jump on you so you can use a ledge as your shield. (You’ll have to be at a lower ground level and very close to the ledge in order for it to work).
-The usual attack evasion where you need to avoid the red line on the ground. However, avoiding the final phase of its devour attack will be tricky since it will dive from the air instead of dashing towards you. So you’ll need to predict where it lands to avoid the devour attack.
-JG, either if it’s a normal and a dive JG (Keep calm and time the guard properly; also remember the type of shield you’re using since each shield would have different timings). This method stops the entire devour sequence so this is a preferred method to deal with its devour.
Hope this helps.
I picked this game up bout 2 weeks ago, and was fight the AGE Eater (Dromi) and went to dive past him and blocked his devour. I NEVER knew you could block devours. I learned something new.
Thanks for the vid didnt feel like learning until I watched then did them all on the first try ^^ excluding Nuadha can never get his jump impact time right smh.
I love just guarding Dromi and Anubis. It's like you just slap their mouths shut with your shield. My teammates used to panic when I would stand in the path of a Dromi or Anubis about to devour; few things make you look like a bigger badass than no-selling the most dangerous attacks in the game. "What's wrong, Ashborn? Did you chip a tooth on me?"
@@nervaaugustus7089 sounds like you ready for the Rank1 dojo
Balmung is the easiest to avoid. All you have to do is stay out of the red paths that it creates.
Nice tips.. thanks
Thx 4 the help, seems like perfect guard is the key
100% yes
Where has been this guide All the time? I already have my platinum trophy
Thank you!
Balmug on ledge is highly unreliable or maybe it is a PC only issue. There are a few cases where Balmug just blink past me and devour successfully.... Only many occasions (5++)
Nice tip on Nuada. Never thought of baiting for 2nd attack pattern.
The rest are just perfect guard easy =P
Great vid
I don't know if this is a bug but when we use the ledge for Balming's devour, he would sometimes go over the ledge and devour us. Anyway thanks for the guide, really helpful.
He does indeed do that sometimes
And here I thought my strategy of diving away in any direction while my teammates fend for themselves was a good strategy
This circle method is always the one my NPCs use XD
Very nice vid, I needed this lol.
but wtf, I didn't know you can perfect guard with the dive technique lol
During the Shield bash portion of the action it functions just like a normal block.
@@bkbrent Good to know. I always just saw the dive technique as a fast means of travel/escape but not guarding lol, now I'm gonna practice trying to time these for sure against some devours
Also the final part of Balmung's devour where he does his final charge is kinda deceptive in a way, I was once on a ledge being all smug and I made sure I was as far away from the edge of it thinking he won't be able to reach me, but he actually did lol. I guess its just better to dive away from that direction or just guard it to be safe
@@roxasfrost3593 Sometimes he does climb onto ledges with his final rush, but I think that adds a little spice to his Devour.
When aragami enter burst coz of silly A.I., I'd just snare trap them or break their bond
Seriously I love how you makes those ash borns Aragami's looks like totally an idiots creatures
Lol
@@bkbrent Your video really help me here thank you :D
Also pro tip
When the aragami do get bursted
Its roar animation will count as an attack that sends you flying if unguarded
You can use this roar animation to trigger a well timed parry upper from the buster
Best with anathema
For the dromi, when it roars before devouring
You can use anathema on 2 of the 3 roars to trigger said burst art
The 2nd roar will either flinch you or autoguard
But they work to get large damage as they roar
For perfect blocks diving is the fastest one but because you have a small window it just changes when you need to block the attack. Best to just practice your gaurding with your preferred shield. If that shield happens to be tower just learn the dive tbh c.c
*Hears Persona Q music* I see you are a man of culture as well
Another Dromi tip: When Dromi begins its move, walk right beside it and stop when it turns around. That way, Dromi will only circle around you and you will have a chance to get a free charged devour and maybe a charge related attack (I wouldn’t recommend Charge Spear’s charge attack but Buster’s Charge Crush or Heavy Moon’s Apocalypse Axe. Long Blade’s Impulse Edge also works too if you have the Gunner’s Paradise burst art since you’ll just stay in a single spot while shooting a stream of impulse blasts.)
The shining ray also fires without moving
You can even lay some gunfire as it circles you
I prefer get devoured in assualt mission honestly.
Not like it can 1 shot me with devour attack and those damage on it's core after it enter burst way too good to ignore
The new testament has finally been handed down to us my friends! Rejoice! Our savior against the ash has come with guidance!
Thanks a lot for the tips! Up until now I just run away and let the other guys tame 'em and hide until those ashes calm down lmao suchh a waste of time
you're awesome
Good strategy nice
But mine is a complex family technique by a certain sun karate master
that end tho! XD
I actually learned circle running from my AI Teammates. They actually look so funny when I discovered it from them.
I want to point out that Svartr Balmung (the assault mission variant) is currently bugged and does not have devour properties in the initial part of his devour. That means that if you try to perform a pointblank Perfect Guard on him, it will not stop him even if you succeed, he will simply rush past you and continue doing his devour.
Here's a video clip showing what I mean:
files.catbox.moe/sdv5q3.webm
It also means however, that you can stand right in front of him while he's firing his boosters and eat the devour without actually being devoured (although you'll still need to run away once he starts doing the second charge).
If you wish to PG Svartr Balmung's devour, you'll want to PG the second charge (the 'easy way' shown in this video).
BAPAK PRO BOSSKURRRR 👍👍👍
Lol that ending 😂 it was at this moment She knew, she fucked up
LMAO that meme on the end
is there like a frame by frame on when is the right time to dive JG?
i really have trouble with the damn dromi especially how it magically makes sudden turns like freaking spiderman
Ra devour dodging is the most awesome thing you csn do the first time phym becomes a god eater. But because i prefer tower shields id just use just guard and tank it like a bowse. Just how i usually do on monhun. Fun games together.
BK using manual blocking shield
Me : Ahhh My level 5 auto guard how lazy am i!
Delete autoguard plz
A better way to circle run than what bk brent did to make it seem unreliable when in fact it is actually reliable if you cant do the timing right
When the dromi is about to roar
Stay close behind it and guard the roars
Once it starts moving you move as well, chase it down and avoid the mouth
Also watch out for walls and its sudden tight turns
Bk brent just did it insanely wrong
Like being way too far and directly facing it
That definitely will get you devoured
Better to stay super close behind it
Keep lock on
And run as it runs as well
Also it helps a lot to be calm when doing so
The 15% power steering will get you.
But man just JG it (;_;)
@@bkbrent it never did get me
I just need to run as it starts moving
In fact i often fuck around by sneaking in a devour as it is hopelessly circling around me
Or get off a few shots from my gun
Or if possible but very dangerously
Sneak in some melee attacks
Some other guy did the circle running right and took virtually no damage as well
Japanese player
I've tried guarding but always get hit, it probably just comes down to perfect I frame
I remember the time when i was fighting a balmung stuck on a platform on the ice map. It just kept on devouring tjere until i managed to bash its brain out.
I did not knew diving works n perfect gaurd is risking if ur not used to the timing but perfect gaurd stops them completely thts op
Using a ledge is not guaranteed to work.
Balmung can get up ledges during the last part.
Also, can you tell me the RGB and Lighting values for your hair?
I'm trying to get auburn hair for my second playthrough with a hammer, but I can't properly create auburn or any other somewhat realistic red hair.
Yours might help me as a base for the hair.
There's a time when the jet lion devour attack bug on me and he just body slam me through space time. (I was on the high ground pretty far from him but still in range. He boost and stuck on the ledge in his final large circle boost. Then boom I was devoured.)
Crazy stuff happens with Devours. Quite often when I'm playing online, I've perfect guarded Dromi's and he still got me anyway.

Question: how do I get more burst arts unlocked cuz I’m not able to unlock any that much I’m a heavy moon user...
The trick to getting the arts unlocked is to pay attention to their requirements, usually getting a particular art to a specified level (you can see the requirements when you go to equip an art you don't have in the selection menu).
If you were talking about burst art finishers, those are randomly unlocked by getting any art from any weapon to lvl4 and/or lvl5 (I got all of those by upgrading roughly 8 arts to lvl5 and a few more at lvl4, but don't quote me on how long it may take).
that super human reflex. are you sure you're a human? or a real life AGE. just kidding 😀 for me i prefer the easier way when amy says the aragami's about to perform devour attack, i start packing my shi*t up and run as fast as i can.😂
u can run on almost every aragami; a bit harder vs nuadha (in tiny space, dromi)
Just guard is so much safer and prevent the silly A.I. get devoured
off topic but may I ask a question ?
Physical weapon vs Elemental ?
Thanks for video I will work on my perfect block timing :)
Elemental is better if you have one fir each element then switch according to Aragami weaknesses.
i'm gonna need godspeed reactions for that
It just comes with practice and not giving up.
Excellent video :) Just wondering, is it easier to just guard with a buckler ot does it also work fine with a tower shield? And does auto-guard skill proc just guard?
It works just fine with the Tower. But the timing can be a bit awkward because you need to put up the shield well before the attack comes out.
Auto-guard skill doesn't work.
Auto Guard only block light attacks.
tower works well with buster blades, you can perform guard to cancel your attack animation. perfect for tight situations. just practice the timing.

Still can't get the hang of perfect guarding dromi's devours... ugh I just don't know when to time it and if I attempt the dive it ends up being too early. For Balmung and Anubis I'm just gonna stick with the dodging tactics you showed in this vid
somewhat stupid question, do you think you can perfect guard Odin's AoE devour?
when I fought that for the first time, it surprised me when it did that because I wasn't expecting it would actually do one, shame that we can't fight it a 2nd time since I wanted to see if I can perfect guard it and the "Meggido" variant doesn't even do a devour attack (and is probably the easiest out of all Assault missions)
Nope, I'm pretty sure you can't block that devour. I tried pretty hard.
Or you can purposely get devoured to reveal the core and then play kill the thing in 30 seconds.
Weak spots I've seen so far are on the first 2
Ra's bellybutton opens up in burst well placed attacks or shots do loads of damage and can hit stun lock if they do enough damage
The second one has two from what I've seen the first is the second arm he grows which is incredibly weak to gun fire, a basic assault rifle shot was doing 250 damage on my test runs. The second is his chest cavity right below the neck, if you are able to hit it with melee he will take a lot.
I haven't fought balmung or the others enough yet to see as I just recently bought the game
ขอบคุณมากครับ โดนกินตลอดเลย

@@bkbrent he said Thank you

Thanks for translating.
For Balmung and Anubis, locking on and then chasing them in a circle also works actually. Also, is the speed of deployment still different on shield dives or is the timing on all shield dives the same?
Dives are roughly the same.
@@bkbrent So I can lug a tower shield around because it matches the aesthetics of my weapon and maybe not die:D yay! (I try to make my weapons match and look cool and it doesn't always end well for me)

@@azzkun9516 goodluck with the dromi
The most bastardly of the bunch and i hate him
Ok finally found a new and better way to deal with the dromi
It apparently has issues with platforms Although he can still climb up them while he runs in his devour attack He still needs a bit of time getting up Can only get up one platform at a time And his turn radius isnt as good So there are 2 stages me and bro used to exploit this where we wait until we know he is about to climb up our platform We dive out of there Go to another platform or the other end of the valley Then repeat The other stage i still need to find proper platforms to do the method So far the dromi never appeared in an all flat stage like the final battle area
The church stage i cant find any other platform except the fountain area when you spawn
Also NEVER stay too near the edge because the hitbox of his devour can still get to you
i suspected this shit was unblockable. but it also could have been me being bad so i assumed i was bad.
