00:32 - David Mitchell: "Last year, I was asked to remove my jumper in a restaurant after the table next door complained that its bold pattern was ruining their photographs."
3:00 - David Mitchell: "One of the codes I live my life by is that my appearance should be in no way noteworthy. But then again, not so unnoteworthy as to be, in itself, noteworthy."
6:12 - David Mitchell: "Last winter, I watched in horror as the train Tube doors trapped the pompom of my bobble hat and carried it off into the darkness of the Underground."
Would I Lie to You? is the hit BBC panel show where two teams of celebrity guests try to figure out whether their opponent's ridiculously far-fetched statements about themselves are true or, in fact, a lie.
Featuring inimitable host Rob Brydon with lightning-quick team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack.

"I deeply hate those moments of being physically noticed" are the words of a man who was bullied throughout his school life.
“I don’t want to sound too sexy, but yes” 😂 and yet he managed to
I won't lie, it made me blush a bit the way he said it. 🙈
@@Missjunebugfreak same haha
Lee forgot that David would never wear such a noteworthy jumper
David's wit and comedic delivery is impeccable.
I love how Lee's team all agreed David was spineless but forgot he would NEVER wear a bold jumper. 😂
I have a feeling they came up with this question on the spot after seeing that woman in the audience. I mean, seriously, David wouldn't even wear a mild jumper.
@@rockets4kids especially since he said he wants to be unnoteworthy, but not so unnoteworthy that it becomes noteworthy
and it turns out that i paused the video after that bit, came to comment, and the next clip was exactly this one 😅
I see several of us have thought alike. There are obviously some great minds watching WILTY.🧠
Maybe not super bold, but what if e.g. an elderly aunt knitted him one in just slightly bright colours? Is it possible his desire to be polite might win out over his embarrassment at wearing something colourful?
Look how pleased Lee is with his 'if there was a comedian in here...' quip.
David sense of comedy timing is immaculate, love him😂
Clearly those who wrote the bobble hat story intended it to be caught getting off the train
I have bobble-hats* and have never caught one in the Underground train doors**.
*Midlife crisis.
**No Underground within 3,000 miles.
With the curvature at the top of the doors on tube trains, in order to catch a hat bobble in them whilst getting off, David would have had to be leaning so far back he'd have departed the train in the style of a limbo dancer.
Every time he talks about his noteworthy unnoteworthy clothing principle, i think about that time he wore a dark brown button up with beige pants, and then i think... you effed up, Mitchel. You effed up.
5:54 I love how you can hear Victoria through his voice
first one HAD to be a lie. david would never wear anything outlandish enough to be asked to remove it for a photo. the man dresses like a backdrop
David Mitchell is the best!
David unknowingly created the grey man movement 🤣
I don’t know why they always make fun of David for doing things with his parents.
Because it’s a comedy show and the image fits with his manufactured ‘role’ of the single, prematurely old-fashioned man living with his parents in a lifestyle more befitting older people.
@@teacherkate1 He hasn't been single in ages. He's been married more than a decade, and has a child. Basically any clip where he has a beard, he was already married. (Although he never lived with his parents as an adult even before that.)
@@junbh2yes. Everyone knows that. It's a character joke. Like Lee Mack is really intelligent but they pretend he's dumb.
Going to a concert Getting on the tube the doors closed on my head. I had a headache the rest of the evening.
7:20 the best
7:09 for actual "Am I have a stroke" facial expressions. xD
"One of the codes I live my life by is that my appearance should be, in no way, noteworthy" David Mitchell.
This is, of course, 100% true. David Mitchell is notoriously averse to being noticed. This is something he frequently alludes to on his regular radio show, The Unbelievable Truth, on which he is the presenter... also on his TV show, The Bubble, on which he is the host (also showing on Netflix) as well on his Channel 4 TV show, Was it something I said, on which he is also the host. He never stops banging on about his phobia of being noticed on this weekly TV show (Would I Lie To You), on which he is a team captain He invariably refers his aversion to being noticed on QI, on which he is a frequent guest and never fails to find an opportunity to mention his insularity whenever he is a guest host on Have I Got News For You. Although he refrains from mentioning it on The Peep Show and That Mitchell & Webb look, on both of which he appears with Robert Webb, it is clear by his manner that he is trying to avoid the camera. And, just in case you've somehow missed any of these prime time TV shows, he also has his own UA-cam channel called David Mitchell's Soapbox on which he discusses all the other aspects of life he disapproved of including... yes, you've guessed it... being noticed. In short: the man is virtually a recluse.
The word is averse. I can't correct the rest of your comment though because I am only on chapter 1 and I have things to do. I'll get back later and read the rest of your thesis.
@@sstills951 Thank you. I have now edited it so, for those who might be wondering, I had initially written 'adverse'.
Ha! Yeah, I get your point, but it's the traditional paradox of a certain type of celebrity. David has also mentioned from time to time that he does like the approval of strangers, and alluded to liking attention, and being a show off. It all comes down to control - just as some actors can thrive in the public spotlight so long as they've adopted a character or a persona, I'd say David is perfectly happy to be 'noticed' in any situation where he feels like he's in control and comfortable, ie on a panel show or playing a character. But being noticed by strangers in the 'real world', where there is no presumption of good will, would cause him a bit of stress.
@@DodderingOldMan you're right of course and I was being flippant for the comedic value. He is a popular celebrity and very much in demand. He is also particularly good at the off-the-cuff humour necessary for comedy quiz shows. I just couldn't resist joking about his 'aversion to being noticed' given his high TV profile. He probably does prefer to blend in when going about his domestic daily life.
His wife went into. Restaurant ahead of him and asked for a table away from the public gaze saying her husband was a celebrity.
Anyone else have random stories they'd love to tell on this show?
When I was a senior in high school, I managed to weasel my way to a senior discount at a restaurant, because they didn't have a specific age mentioned.
Ryan I gave you that senior discount because you came in at 4:30 for dinner. I figured you were just identifying as a senior.
I only have two good stories:
"As a newly-hired intern at a Fortune 500 company, I once dressed-down the VP of International Sales."
"I have a policy to always carry lots of small bills, after an awkward situation in New York City."
(And the latter one isn't even particularly true anymore because there are so many different ways to pay nowadays.)
@@sstills951 nah just a very hungry boy
Funny enough, a few weeks later, I went back and the sign then read "Senior Discount (55+)"
Yay me?
