I'm a motswana from Botswana. Of all our neighboring countries, Namibia is the only country I feel free traveling to using my car. I don't fear being hijacked or being charged by police for nothing. I must also say they have good roads too.

We are advised to take care just like in Botswana or other countries. Batswana and South Africa have many tribes and ethnic groups that originate in South Africa.

I am not sure where you get that and if you did, it may have been a hint or advise on exercising caution when travelling to SA, and there's totally nothing wrong with that. Botswana and SA share culture, language and just so you know the largest ethnic Tswana group is that of South Africa with a population of over 4 million. South Africans and Batswana share border crossing because of their familial relationships on both sides. Both have relatives from both sides. Most families don't even live far away from each other within the border radius. Its painful to see them stamping their passports for a 2 kilometer familial visitations. Mafikeng used to be Botswana's capital before it was moved to Gaborone in 1966. Interesting isn't it? Those two should have been one country from the start and I am not sure what hell happened then but we al know its the work of the colonialists. They divided territories to their own advantage and look at the rest of Africa.
Namibia is very small in the standard of living and carrence, not because im in Namibia but coz I meet lot of people from Botswana and more educated than us.
Namibia is very small and undeveloped with only two universities. Windhoek is the only place where everyone goes, there are no other options, everyone knows everyone's business it's extremely boring. In the North it's literally a village, people wear traditional clothes almost everyday, just like the olden days. No traffic lights, and the roads are gravel. The hospitals are extremely bad beyond measure.

I’m Namibian 🇳🇦 and usually visit Botswana every year and I call this a fair/good comparison in the sense that both countries are NOT entirely different from each other! This is very educational and gives an idea of what each country can offer! I have visited Zambia and South Africa too and it just feels like home!

I am from Botswana, but I must say I will never forget the New Year holidays of 2019 that I had with my then fiance, now wife. Swakopmund (Namibian coast city), was like an extension of Gaborone (Botswana capital). We met a lot of friends from Gaborone doing their holidays there, we even bumped into one of my cousins and her hubby in a night club in Swakop during new year countdown celebration. The club capacity had half Namibians and half Batswana all full of love, music and dancing. Viva Africa Viva.
Namibia is a country that developed so very fast in economy. Imagine we just get independence in 1990 but our economy has done so well. Bostwana we love you.
The nickname comes from our liberation struggle history and the odds we faced. We fought off the Germans and as soon as we were about to win, the tables were turned against Germany after losing ww2 and we had new colonizers (the British) wh turned us to their proxy South Africa under the apartheid regime. SA had one if the strongest armies in the world when we contained them for over 40 years of guerrilla warfare of which we have won many significant battles until our independence. Hence the verse Namibia Land of the Brave in our national anthem which we have adopted as a nickname now.

Having lived in both countries I'd say they they share some similarities of small population mid-income stable economies powered by diamonds, tourism and beef and very good and friendly people, but the differences are a joy that each individual needs to experience to truly appreciate their uniqueness. Botswana built its economy and its infrastructure from the ground up and has never inherited any from Western countries unlike most African countries where the infrastructure was inherited from colonialists. The colonialists deserted Botswana because they thought it was a desert and there was nothing to gain from it. So they had to fend for themselves.

Mahikeng ppl speak Tswana same language as Botswana... Mahikeng being one of the only cities which served two countries and was influential in the independence of Botswana and South Africa. I am from Botswana, and growing up I must say I LOVED Bophuthatswana (to gather the Tswana). We went to Mafikeng every month for shopping and I treated it like my second home. I loved Lucas Mangope. The way his son died in such a freak accident was so sad :( I wish I could go back in time to such an idyllic period in my life. We have always had excellent relations with the Tswanas of South Africa. They treat us like their own. I wish Botswana and Bophuthatswana had merged to form one country. It would have been a magnificent union eish!

I read this review but it's fair though not absolute. Lots of similarities between 2 countries. However to be honest as an informed african academic, I reiterate that Namibia is by far ahead of Botswana in many respects like infrastructure(be it roads, railways or Airways), access to health, access to primary en secondary education, tourism diversity en Namibia has the 3rd highest wages en salaries in africa after mauritius en south africa.Botswana beat Namibia in 2 things:has high gdp per capita en abit safer than namibia. However if u were to look at reality on ground u will believe that Namibians are richer than batswanas. The 2 countries are middle income countries by ranking. Have been to Botswana many times but I must state that BOTSWANA WAS AHEAD OF NAMIBIA AFTER INDEPENDENCE OF Namibia but not now in terms of overall development. Namibian towns where whites lived such as Windhoek, otjiwarongo, keetmanshoop, luderitz, okahandja, tsumeb, grootfontein, otavi, Outjo, Walvis Bay etc were developed to the similar extent of towns in South Africa. Those towns were developed beyond any town in botswana including Francis Town. However, after 1990 development in Namibia focused more on the countryside that was underdeveloped. So Namibia overall is more developed than botswana. In fact u travel Botswana from namibian border to Zimbabwe border then u see what I mean. Botswana is ahead of many countries in africa but they were ahead of Namibia 1990 not today. Pls Google 'Botswana GDP 1990 vs Namibia Gdp 1990 en see that Botswana gdp was astronomically high than Namibia due to the fact that Botswana is the largest producer of diamonds in southern hemisphere after Russia at 26 million carats per annum. History has it that they were the largest producer of diamonds since 1967 when orapa diamond mine was founded. That said, Botswana had money to develop Botswana since 1970 but they slept on duty all those years. They seriously really started only from year 2000 according to my travels there. Wth grade 7 in botswana u cud get a high position in government or elsewhere. I schooled wth pipo near border schools in Namibia who left grade 7 early 90,s en went to get big positions in Botswana. However it has changed today but still u have alot of workers there who can't be labelled better in English in Botswana though they improved tremendously on education. Botswana did less to invest in infrastructure in the 70,s en 80,s because they were interested in keeping the money(in name of continual budget surpluses) not using it to the extent that Botswana recorded their first budget deficit in some years ago for the first time in history since the discovery of diamonds. Infact Gaborone looks new as per buildings. Was small town some years ago (. So give them credit they uped their game. IN CONCLUSION: lesson to Africa is that we must diversify our economies away from non renewable resources like oil en minerals because they don't last foreva. Its predicted that 90% of diamond reserves in botswana's mines has lifespan up to 2028. Same in Namibia when it comes to terrestrial or land based diamond mining operations predicted to last up to 2025. Sea diamond mining will continue. meaning we must find new deposits or diversify our economies or else we shall perish as nations as our gdps will shrink by half as it happened to Angola. Main source of gdp was from Oil at 80%of gdp. When oil lost 70% of its value Angola became a poor country over nite and its gdp per capita declined by 30%. By well informed African researcher.

As motswana son of the Soil Botswana, I find Namibia more appealing than my own. It boast of highly developed Energy Sector, well planned villages and road networks, extensive road, rail networks and high Internet penetration level. Botswana loves & respects Namibia. Most people from Botswana (I'm one) would respectfully and happily agree that, while Bots economy and HDI is stronger, Namibian infrastructure is superior (Namibia became industrialized earlier, benefiting from great infrastructure developments, but at great human cost, i.e. apartheid, genocide, slavery, all of which were absent in the then agrarian Botswana).
I did a program on fleet management in the fourth industrial revolution in Namibia. And without fear of contradiction, Namibia is much far ahead than Botswana. Bravo ✓
And yet Botswana is consistently ranked top in most surveys on innovation, entrepreneurship, etc. Perhaps doing a proper comparative study would raise this above hunches and gut feelings?

We met a lot of friends from Gaborone doing their holidays there, we even bumped into one of my cousins and her hubby in a night club in Swakop during new year countdown celebration. The club capacity had half Namibians and half Batswana all full of love, music and dancing. Viva Africa Viva.

The nickname comes from our liberation struggle history and the odds we faced. We fought off the Germans and as soon as we were about to win, the tables were turned against Germany after losing ww2 and we had new colonizers (the British) wh turned us to their proxy South Africa under the apartheid regime. SA had one if the strongest armies in the world when we contained them for over 40 years of guerrilla warfare of which we have won many significant battles until our independence.
Hence the verse Namibia Land of the Brave in our national anthem which we have adopted as a nickname now.

Having lived in both countries I'd say they they share some similarities of small population mid-income stable economies powered by diamonds, tourism and beef and very good and friendly people, but the differences are a joy that each individual needs to experience to truly appreciate their uniqueness.

I think it ok, Namibia benefited some inheritance from its colonizers while Botswana has to build from the ground up
Botswana built its economy and its infrastructure from the ground up and has never inherited any from Western countries unlike most African countries where the infrastructure was inherited from colonialists. The colonialists deserted Botswana because they thought it was a desert and there was nothing to gain from it. So they had to fend for themselves.
Germans started building Namibia as far back as 1900. British colonisers only collected tax from Botswana and built nothing.

Hello Displorers, I am Namibian and frankly, I love our Southern African neighbours including Botswana. we share so much in common. and the comparison says it all. In my view, no two places are the same, but these two countries have little to separate them, we are like twins. Overall, southern Africa has one of the most Aesthetic landscapes and people than anywhere else in the world.

Mahikeng which is a city in the North West Province of South Africa was the Adminsitrative capital of Botswana. It served until 1966 when offices were moved to Gaborone. Mahikeng ppl speak Tswana same language as Botswana... Mahikeng being one of the only cities which served two countries and was influential in the independence of Botswana and South Africa.

I am from Botswana, and growing up I must say I LOVED Bophuthatswana (to gather the Tswana). We went to Mafikeng every month for shopping and I treated it like my second home. I loved Lucas Mangope. The way his son died in such a freak accident was so sad :( I wish I could go back in time to such an idyllic period in my life. We have always had excellent relations with the Tswanas of South Africa. They treat us like their own. I wish Botswana and Bophuthatswana had merged to form one country. It would have been a magnificent union eish!

Given the years botswana has been independent, it's quite understandable why they have the edge, I'm not trying to prove anything but I'm just saying you were also supposed to mention that Namibia just gained it's independence in 1990

I read this review but it's fair though not absolute. Lots of similarities between 2 countries. However to be honest as an informed african academic, I reiterate that Namibia is by far ahead of Botswana in many respects like infrastructure(be it roads, railways or Airways), access to health, access to primary en secondary education, tourism diversity en Namibia has the 3rd highest wages en salaries in africa after mauritius en south africa.Botswana beat Namibia in 2 things:has high gdp per capita en abit safer than namibia. However if u were to look at reality on ground u will believe that Namibians are richer than batswanas. The 2 countries are middle income countries by ranking. Have been to Botswana many times but I must state that BOTSWANA WAS AHEAD OF NAMIBIA AFTER INDEPENDENCE OF Namibia but not now in terms of overall development. Namibian towns where whites lived such as Windhoek, otjiwarongo, keetmanshoop, luderitz, okahandja, tsumeb, grootfontein, otavi, Outjo, Walvis Bay etc were developed to the similar extent of towns in South Africa. Those towns were developed beyond any town in botswana including Francis Town. However, after 1990 development in Namibia focused more on the countryside that was underdeveloped. So Namibia overall is more developed than botswana. In fact u travel Botswana from namibian border to Zimbabwe border then u see what I mean. Botswana is ahead of many countries in africa but they were ahead of Namibia 1990 not today. Pls Google 'Botswana GDP 1990 vs Namibia Gdp 1990 en see that Botswana gdp was astronomically high than Namibia due to the fact that Botswana is the largest producer of diamonds in southern hemisphere after Russia at 26 million carats per annum. History has it that they were the largest producer of diamonds since 1967 when orapa diamond mine was founded. That said, Botswana had money to develop Botswana since 1970 but they slept on duty all those years. They seriously really started only from year 2000 according to my travels there. Wth grade 7 in botswana u cud get a high position in government or elsewhere. I schooled wth pipo near border schools in Namibia who left grade 7 early 90,s en went to get big positions in Botswana. However it has changed today but still u have alot of workers there who can't be labelled better in English in Botswana though they improved tremendously on education. Botswana did less to invest in infrastructure in the 70,s en 80,s because they were interested in keeping the money(in name of continual budget surpluses) not using it to the extent that Botswana recorded their first budget deficit in some years ago for the first time in history since the discovery of diamonds. Infact Gaborone looks new as per buildings. Was small town some years ago (. So give them credit they uped their game. IN CONCLUSION: lesson to Africa is that we must diversify our economies away from non renewable resources like oil en minerals because they don't last foreva. Its predicted that 90% of diamond reserves in botswana's mines has lifespan up to 2028. Same in Namibia when it comes to terrestrial or land based diamond mining operations predicted to last up to 2025. Sea diamond mining will continue. meaning we must find new deposits or diversify our economies or else we shall perish as nations as our gdps will shrink by half as it happened to Angola. Main source of gdp was from Oil at 80%of gdp. When oil lost 70% of its value Angola became a poor country over nite and its gdp per capita declined by 30%. By well informed African researcher.

Botswana loves & respects Namibia. Most people from Botswana (I'm one) would respectfully and happily agree that, while Bots economy and HDI is stronger, Namibian infrastructure is superior (Namibia became industrialized earlier, benefiting from great infrastructure developments, but at great human cost, i.e. apartheid, genocide, slavery, all of which were absent in the then agrarian Botswana).
I did a program on fleet management in the fourth industrial revolution in Namibia. And without fear of contradiction, Namibia is much far ahead than Botswana. Bravo ✓
And yet Botswana is consistently ranked top in most surveys on innovation, entrepreneurship, etc. Perhaps doing a proper comparative study would raise this above hunches and gut feelings?
