  • We, being the opinionated humans we are, cling to the need to feel right about every subject on a daily basis, Especially on social media. But I didn't create this post for you to seek confirmation from others on your opinion regarding who won a battle between two DJ titans. Nor does this post exist for you to validate your DJ I.Q.
Instead of pontificating I urge you to please save your breath and refrain instigating any form of debate with me or anyone else on this thread regarding the opinion you have from your couch. Pay less attention to the results of this battle and just enjoy the nuance substance demonstrated by each of these DJ behemoths.
DJ Cash Money vs Joe Cooley for the 1987 New Music Seminar title for World Supremacy.
*Join us Monday at The New School (66 West 12th Street: Building A - Room A404) University for a two part lecture with arguably the most innovative and accomplished DJ of the century Cash Money.
Part 1 commences at 4pm and finishes at 5:15pm and part 2 spans from 6pm to 7:15pm. This event is open to the public but entry will be based on a "first rsvp first serve" basis. Please rsvp at swiftr@newschool.edu and be sure to specify which lecture you plan on attending.

Yes, still are. Also bear in mind that these guys only had a few years to get to this level and with far worse Dj equipment, no internet so were really pushing the envelope to get to this level so quickly. How long does it take an average DJ to reach this level now?

This video version of this amazing battle is much better than the version I saw back in '88. Majority of all west coast DJs saw the version that I believe ICE-T recorded. ICE'S recording was further away from the stage. It was from the crowd's point of view. It's nice to see another much better version after all these years. Thank you for posting this up Rob Swift.

The reason Cash won because what he was doing took more skill to pull off. Cooley's set may have sounded better because it was less mistakes but when what your doing is easier to do it should be less mistakes

Doug Young - I definitely respect your opinion but in terms of actual DJ mechanics Cash got him. When Joe was killing Tour de France - he’s basically scratching one record while the other is playing. He leaned in his left hand and didn’t really use his right. And transforming with the line switch back then was a DJ no no. I saw an interview with Cash and he said that wasn’t his set up. They had to use someone else’s mixer and tables. That may have had something to do with it though. Classic Battle. Respect to both. What other battles did they rob the west DJs in? I definitely want to watch those too. Thansk

"...But U can't get enough of Everlasting Bass" - "...& everybody check him out Ca$h Money's on the cut..." 2 of my fav DJz in a LLLLLLOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGG list of DJz, goin' back to DJ Tommy from 203rd St. in Hollis/St.Albans back in '79!! Supa Legendary, & wut both were doin' wuz ahead of their time.
Now...IMHO, If i were a judge...I woulda gave it 2 Ca$h 4 3 reasons. 1. On his 1st set, Ca$h didn't use head phones at all, while Joe did, makin' Ca$h'z set more risky. In the 2nd round Joe got more risky by doin' a no headphone set with 1 body trick, & Ca$h used the headphones minimally. 2. 1st set - Ca$h did Body tricks, & still sounded good, & Joe did none. & 3. Also 1st set - Joe used the line switch AND did 90% of his work on 1 table, (so it wuz more of a timing thang, than a quik with 2 handz on the wheelz & fader thang, thus makin' it easier), while Ca$h used both & the fader. (which Joe got propz 4 doi'n' on his "It's Time" set in the 2nd round.) But i felt Ca$h did more with the Scratchin' stytlinz. (& hiz stylinz were craaaazy, & brand spankin', blow U away, new at the time, unless U were familiar with him & the other Philly DJz). So I woulda gave Ca$h the 1st round (usin' horse racing vebiage) by a length (a body), & the 2nd round woulda been Ca$h'z 2 (by a head) based on the fact that Joe wuz left hand dominant in his set & used the line switch 2 do his transformer type scratch, while Ca$h used both hands almost evenly, + he added the scratchin; flavor with a fader transformer, which i thought sounded better. At the very best, the 2nd round woulda been even. If a judge wuz using ONLY how the sets sounded, they coulda leaned Joe's way. Just how i viewed it from a judging perspective. Seein' how they work on the tables, makes a huge difference, & make the points made much clearer than if just hearing it, az i have for the last 37 yearz. Hearin' it ONLY makes it close with a nice lean towardz Joe. Seein' it putz the heavy lean in Ca$h'z favor.
Meanwhile...ALL 4 SETZ WERE LEGAL DOPE!! & DAMN! 37 YEARZ!?! That fact alone iz crazy!!! This IZ a timeless classic! Todah (Thanx) Ahki Rob 4 postin' this. Much luv & respect 4 all U do 4 the culture. YAH bless.

Two scratch mix legends, basically could flip a coin to determine the winner. But I don't think people understand that Joe beat juggled those difficult fast tempo records with a wide bulky Numark mixer and his decks in the normal position. He had a much higher degree of difficulty. Knocking him for transforming with the line switch is dumb. I'm surprised he didn't break one off like I did many times on those cheap p.o.s DM-1150A mixers.

It might be DJ Jazzy Jeff. He was on the David Letterman show in 86 when he won the technique seminar. And he was be juggling James Brown funky drummer.

I have been watching DJ'ing since the 80's what the hell is Cooley doing , I like strictly crossfade dj not using a cheater to do something you cannot do with the fader. All hail the king. The green eyed brother brother with the green eyes remember that.
