- Language, Navigation and Food. The three things everyone needs help with in Japan. I've been using most of these apps for the past 5 years living here so I standby them being the best (in my opinion anyway). Unfortunately, I don't know if they're all available on android though... sorry.
Google Maps
Hyperdia
Google Translate
Imiwa
Gurunavi
HappyCow

I remember using Google Translate on a sign in a rather isolated forest / bush land part of Nagano Pref.
The sign said "Beware Of Bears". I was not ready for that one.
Another app I recommend for a traveller is the Japan Post Bank ATM Finder. I’ve found their ATMs are the best option for exchange rates and fees. So definitely helps out knowing where to find one when you’re out and about and low on cash 💴
You always make sure your background and shot is exciting and interesting. It's very much noticable in your other traveling videos but even when it's just you talking you find a way to make sure composition, lighting and colour is correct. Really impressive.
And now knowing what you have to endure to film these, I admire it even more. Outro was hilarious.
Thanks so much! It’s good to know that some people notice the effort that goes into it!
Oh Hannah, I love the bloopers at the end plus your 4 legged friend ! Well done.
*All of a sudden this is the busiest street in Tokyo* Dead😂😂😭😂😂
Very informative, Thanks. Loving the outtakes at the end, such fun.
Don't use Google Translate to translate a word into Japanese and then tattoo it onto your body. Just ask Ariana Grande.
LOL
This was a very informative video. All the apps you mentioned are great and very useful. I particularly liked the Happy Cow app and I'm definitely going to try it out. Thanks so much, Hannah I really enjoyed this video, and the ending cracked me up!👍🇯🇵❤
Great video. We plan to use the common apps you mentioned but this was a great tip for Imiwa and Gurunavi! Love the bloopers and sporadic things you include in the videos.
So glad it’s been useful for you!
Hey Hannah, just subscribed, great vids and very informative, presented with some humour......great stuff, will be in Japan in March
Im traveling to Japan in May and this will be so useful, thanks!
I used ivideo on my trip to tokyo that i just got back from yesterday, because you reccomended it, and it was amazing! Truly so convenient when trying to use google maps while on the move!
Thanks for the video Hannah! I’m going to Japan in March, I’d love to hear about your favourite vegan places!
The music you play in the background is so relaxing!
thanks for the gurunavi recommendation. I'll be in japan in less than a month and i'm just trying to watch as many japan vids as possible!
Yurekuru Call earthquake app works a treat too. Great video Hannah, love the out-takes. Cheers.
I will travel to Japan next March this is pretty helpful \o/
Great quide for how to make my Japan trip easier.... Once again great video
Thanks for all the helpful info. And I'll be getting one of those pocket wifis when I get there. 😊
thank you , i'm visiting Japan in April again and this should come in handy
Ben and I are going to Japan in less than a month. This was really helpful for me! Thanks!!! 🌸
Super helpful! Thanks for sharing
Helpfull! Thx hannah
Thank you for the wonderful informational video.
Good job Hannah! This is just what I needed for my preparation for Japan when I go in March-April :D thank you Hannah and I'm loving your videos so keep on going and have fun while doing it! Friendly regards Jasper from The Netherlands!
Rènvy 日本に来られるんですか!?
とても嬉しいです^_^ 堪能してくださいね!
@@user-qj7cn1wg6s I had to translate that haha, but thank you! Maybe do a drink always like yo meet people even tho I'm a bit shy haha
Rènvy I think Japanese people rarely talk to stranger spontaneously, but we want to interact with others and to be spoken is happy!! Then, you will tell us about your county , please!
@@user-qj7cn1wg6s then I'll have to muster my courage haha
That ending... haha. Super helpful video! Wish I saw it earlier... best wishes from germany.
I'm planning a trip to Japan in the near future. And this video pop in my subscription feed when I was searching for airplanes. It's a sign! :D Thanks!
Hahaha glad it came at the right time!
Love your video style - wonderful
thank you for this! my honeymoon is gonna be in japan so this is so helpful 💛
Was in Japan last October and Google maps worked well for me. I personally found that pocket wifi wasn't as useful for me but I do recommend it.
Thanks for your tips, never can't have enough of those.
The improvement of Google translate is very nice.
Yes tech stuff! 😉 Thank you!!! 👍🏻✌🏻
I love Imiwa! It's just soooo awesome. It has so much more functions than you just raised in the the video. I just love it 😄😄😄
And about all the others: I used already all of them beside the food ones. I can just totally agree with you about the first four apps you mentioned.
And I'll definitely try Gurunabi in March while being in Japan ☺️
Yeah Imiwa has endless capabilitiesb
We're heading to Japan in September and these apps are super helpful. Especially the food app 😂 Thanks Hannah!
Glad it's come at a good time then :D
google maps you can download zones / countries maps so you can use it offline with all the basic map functionality as opposed to just leaving in background running
Perfect info... just what i needed...
Awesome final frame, hahaha
And I haven’t heard anyone say “f- me dead” since I was last in Brisbane
Thanks for the discount code! Flying over for our hanami honeymoon in late March, we’ll have to use that!
Even though I got a SIM card at the airport, the pocket wifi from the AirBNB that I threw in my backpack everyday while I was in Japan, was amazing. There were very few time I found my phone lose that connection and go to the SIM card. Highly recommended. Microsoft translator app also was good.
Is there an English version of Gurunavi? I can’t seem to find it on the App Store. Thanks.
"Quiet on the set! QUIET ON THE SET!!" Haha, thanks for the tips, and even though you might think these apps would be no brainers, it really helps to also hear it from someone like yourself, who has gone through the trouble of trying other alternatives or tested these thoroughly. Great post, video looks crispy crispy, loved the ending!
Thanks as always! Glad to hear ppl respect my opinion that much, even though some are no brainers hahaah
Great vlog and very informative. How about information about inexpensive hotels or hostels. Any gyms that are reasonably priced while vacationing. My wife and I loved the bloopers at the end 😄😄😄
ahh the pleasant sound of high speed rail I wish we had that here in the states awesome vid thanks for sharing
It’s all pleasant and nice until it interrupts my filming for the 24th time hahha
well at least the trains are on time tho
Hannah, your face @6:23 is priceless!! I literally LOL'd
Hey, Hannah, thank you for the helpful video. I'd love to see the video about the best vegan restaurants soon, because I'm traveling to Japan in a month :)
Hyperdia was such a useful website! I used it a lot when I lived in Japan back in 2009 :)
That and the Tokyo Metro app. It's so great to see more options these days such as all the new great Google Maps and Translate options:)
Great end to the video by the way. Must have been very annoying to you but I had a great laugh watching that 👍🏻
Girl....I leave for Japan in TWO days! The timing of this video couldn't be better - just downloaded gurunavi! Thanks for the recommendation! Btw - Imiwa & Hyperdia are not on Android ;)
Sorry to hear they're not on android :( hopefully the others will help you out though!
"Yomiwa - Japanese Dictionary and OCR" by Yomiwa, looks like the same app... Don't know why it has a different name on Android.
"HyperDia - Japan Rail Search" by Hitachi Systems, Ltd. exists, and look the same as the one Hannah recommended.
Elizabeth: I used Japan Official Travel App on my Android which is made by their tourism board and has a function very similar to Hyperdia, and even has big gaps between connections because it assumes you are a tourist not sure where you're going.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!! I'll be trying them out :D
is gurunavi in English? I download in US, but it's all Japanese
Hahaha gotta love the bloopers at the end! 😂
actually google map have features built in that allow users to download the map for offline use.
that is even if the user exit the app but it probably will not work for navigation.
You can also download your offline routes on Google maps so it doesn't need to be in the background
Before I went I learned language, all the maps of the cities, went through google streets, the wanna try foods, all JR trains I needed. Did perfectly well without any apps, internet and phone calls. used available wifi if needed and offline Google maps with GPS sometimes. But if you're a smartphone junky and not a huge fan of Japan like myself, apps is the way to go.
Thank you for the video, looking forward to your Vegetarian Restaurant recommendation. My sons are vegetarian and I need help for their next visit.
Hi Hannah, been enjoying your youtube content since a year ago. and since i'm planning to visit Japan again, I'm wondering how's the exchange rate in Japan?
Wonderful 😆
Don't know for iPhone, but on android in google maps, you can download fairly large regions for offline navigation.
So that's what Hannah's internal screaming looks like. Screaming Bambi.
Can you list the apps in your description ?
Just by audio the names are hard to get.
IMIWA not being available on Android, would anyone have an equivalent to suggest ?
Added! :D
I love the Geiger counter app, it will work wonders in Tokyo.
You can download small slices of a map for offline use in Google maps. Just FYI
thanks for the info. on apps. will be in Japan this weekend to see gf =)
Very interesting video - then you made it hilarious ! Thanks Hannah
Oh totally recommend imiwa, great for translating kanji
This is very interesting because the last time i was in Japan no one used apps in 2010
I would also recommend Suica. Its a wallet/app. Saves u a lot on train fares.
To help on Google Maps... I favorited all the placesbefore I visited, and they were one click away. I got to about 90% of my sites to see, and did not have look up much the day I wanted to see them. I picked one section of Tokyo and tried to knock out as many as I could while I leisurly walked around for that day.
Good suggestion!
Google maps has an offline mode. You should check it out
I truly enjoyed the outtakes. 🤣 Your expressions are priceless. 😊😊😊
Hahaha i was about to flip a table.
Currently Hannah Still, great video. And the kids and cyclists survived. 🤣
I also like Navitime for Japan Travel for interesting articles, ideas, and tips. And agree on pocket WiFi for sure!
But I cannot change the language in Navitime, it is in Japanese. How can I do it?
If you have a newer Samsung phone, use Bixby vision inside the camera app. Works 10x better then translate picture thing and seems to be more accurate
Can google maps help by picking JR rail routes out so you can take the cheaper options if your a JR rail pass holder while you travel?
I like the outtakes.
Super useful since I'm traveling to Japan next month! PS, one of my todo's is to find a ryokan with onsen someplace snowy. Got any ideas? Mixed-gender or private bathing preferred! And hopefully reasonable prices? Cheers! ✌🏼
Hi, how can I change the language in Gurunavi app?
Whats the name of the introsong?
Can Google translate translate vertical writing?
hi hannah other 2 app to traslate?
I agree with your suggestions but for a more natural translation (not always correct but they tell what they have said literally) try VoiceTra. It needs access to the internet but gives a real chance to carry on a conversation.
You can use Google Map app to download offline map. 👍👌
Wanting to go to Japan November 2021 for 3 weeks any suggestions
How did u get a Gurunavi app in english?
Hey Hannah, can you put the name of the apps in the description? I'm from Spain and it's slightly difficult for me to understand the name of the apps.
Good video, thanks for the information! You are amazing.
Added! :)
Dōmo arigatō gozaimasu, you're incredible. 😅
Thanks hannah. From brisbane
YAY Happy Cow!! I was wondering if it would be on your list :-) I bought it just as a way to shoe appreciation and support the creator.
Yeah I bought it in the end and I’m glad I did :)
Hi Hannah!
Can you please talk more about how you use the iVideo plan and if a traveller will only be in for a short amount of time (ie for me me will be 18days). It looks like iVideo is the cheapest I can get. But just so unsure which one is the best and what you use.
Thanks for your dedication and commitment in your channel!
More blessings and success to you!
I used Ivideo for my two week trip... Best thing I ever did. It even worked on the shikansen to Kyoto. Super easy to use, and reliable. If you got the budget for it, it will be worth it. Bring battery backup charges to ensure all day use., and for you phone.
Thanks @@Gantorin! Can I please know which plan you used?
We used the newest one last year and it worked great except on subways. Didnt have any signal there. We'll be renting the one which has great signal in subways soon as we'll come back to Japan end of the month.
We just reserved one on the website, then picked it up at the post office at Narita T2. Then when it was time to leave, we just put it back in the provided return envelope and dropped it off at the airport mailbox. ☺ If you have more questions, you can message me on my Instagram which is traveltheworldwithme07. I might not be able to see my notifications here on YT. :)
hahaha... the outro is hilarious. thanks for the recommendations.
anyone know how to get Gurunavi into English?
Are the train prices on google maps accurate?
Thanks for the tips, will definitely download all of em. Btw, any telcom/internet service provider do u think will suit a one month visit to Japan? (with data package+calls) and will it work with a Pocophone F1 or One plus 6 phone. ? i need to look that up on a thread somewhere.. :) Bloopers ROcks!
I just use ivideo wifi (unlimited plan (601?)) as all my communication. For the past year I haven’t had a Japanese phone number and it hasn’t been too big of an issue. If you need to call someone, you can buy some Skype credit and call ppl there.
Oh yes the google is a must i use that myself hehe :D
Hahahahaha! Love the bloopers and Human errors!
What about Yelp ?
You can download google maps for offline use by different cities.
Downloading Offline Maps are disabled for all of Japan.
Another tip for Google Translate, make sure you download the language packs so you can operate offline with it.
Wondering if you have any recommendations for vegetarian instant noodles (or if they exist haha). Traveling in Japan at the moment.
Also, been heavily using Google translate, maps and happycow (free version on Android, not rich enough to buy it yet) good recommendations!
T’s Tan Tan (the vegan ramen shop in Tokyo Station) sell an instant noodle version in their store and in some Natural Lawson’s :)
@@CurrentlyHannah a reply from Hannah! :O
Thank you so much! I shall investigate. :)
Great videos by the way!
6:24 was fantastic :)
なんて美しい方なんだ!
日本に来て日本の良さを伝えてくれてとても嬉しいです^_^
Your Awesome
With T-Mobile you get unlimited data while traveling. It was so useful when I was in Japan and I had internet but my non T-mobile friends didn't.
I’m living for these outtakes! 😂
I have the same luck when I’m out shooting: “oh hey this is a great spot!” **Entire population of Texas converges to throw a party**
Hahahahaha EXACTLY! It really be like that sometimes lol
How many countries have you travel?
Which is the best, and Why?(Explain in detail) 3+2=5 marks.
That Google Translate photo function ensured I could use the washing machine in my Hiroshima hotel properly.
love that ending. LOL
