Marshall, I so agree with you. I've been fortunate to speak to over 100,000 students across our country the past 20 years in over 100 schools. I have a project you might be interested in. I have thousands of DVDs at my home that I'd like to donate to schools. Particularly underprivileged schools. Let me know if you have any thoughts about this. Thank you. A great uncle of mine told me a similar story of the Higgins boat landings. His captain, or coxswain, I don't know what Uncle Gene called the pilot of the boat, told the guys to get out in 10 ft of water. One of the infantryman took his 45 out and told the guy to get closer to the beach, then they decided to turn the craft around 180 degrees so the machine gun fire wouldn't mow them down so easily anyway, it worked for Uncle Gene. He fought until the end of the war. One of the toughest individuals I have ever met in my 57 yrs here.

Is anyone else startled by how much this lovely gentleman still looked like his GI photo, all these years later? Many vets that I've seen interviewed, I'd never have known they were the same people I saw in their war time photos, but it's amazing how little this man changed in 60 years. Particularly when he was thinking, it was even more clear then.

Great interview. When he was talking about sending the German soldier to the United States, there were soldiers that were captured sent here. I live in Greenwood, South Carolina and there was a camp on the Ninety Six Highway going towards a small town called Ninety Six. From what I have been told they would make them work on details and the German soldiers talked about how good the people in town treated them.

Ex Brit guardsman here, thank you for your amazing story, have always really admired the ww2 generation.
I recalled being told a very sobering story by a friend of my parents..
His father was a Royal navy coxswain taking the Americans into Omaha beach, anyway unfortunately one of there landing crafts on the way to the beach took a number of serious hits, he then turned back to the main ship were they had to clean the deck, the remains of the bodies were removed accordingly and the blood was just hosed out the door..
    Absolutely unreal 🙏🙏❤️❤️

I wish my grandfather was still around so you can hear his story.
He served 6 years on the battleship North Carolina as a Navy corpsman.
He was working in the coal mines in Scranton Pennsylvania when Germany invaded Poland September 1st 1939 then Russia September 17th 1939. He tried to go back to Poland to fight alongside his brothers he cannot make it back.
So he joined the American Military.

Just one thing I feel I have to say is how awful it is that Belgium named a ship after the murderous monster prince Leopold what that man did in the Congo is so horrific shame on Belgium.

I am grateful for your kind words. I too wish there were many more views of these stories. This is real life and many people are conditioned by hollywood and the news media and chase after fantasy and fiction. They don't want the accountability nor the responsibility of hearing a true story. Plus, many evil people want to erase our history. History is best learned from those who were there!!! One of SGT. Fast's most telling comments was describing the difference between the US forces and the Germans. The American citizen/soldier was able to think, and to improvise. As he stated, the decision to not land on Dog Green Beach likely saved hundreds of lives. Whereas a German officer would have strictly complied and landed where he was told, outcome be damned. I also doubt if a German officer would have delegated serious responsibility to an enlisted man. Again the improv in selecting and questioning of a German POW to find out about the land mines, and be told to go around them. Brilliant! Also, to go find us some 60mm mortar rounds. No men: No problem. Just borrow a farmer's horse and cart. Totalitarian societies discourage free thinking, and suppress it. In a free society individual initiative is rewarded and encouraged. These insights are what truly gives value to these stories. That is why these stories need to be preserved and passed on.That is not at all meant to detract from the incredible courage of these men. They were called the Greatest Generation for good reason.

I grew up an Army brat in the US, Japan, Italy, and in the South. As an Airborne and Ranger officer did two combat deployments to Vietnam - 82nd Abn during Tet ‘68 at Hué, 1st Air Cavalry ‘69-‘70 in War Zone C and along the Cambodian border.

Victor mentions a town, the men who came from Bedford, there is a book called The Bedford Boys by Alex Kershaw probably still available, tells the story about the young men those who lost their lives and those who survived, I've read it a couple of times, very good.

It's funny how different the accounts are of the men that landed that day. Some said they knew what they knew the significance of what was happening at the time, some said they didn't. Some said they remember the fear of facing the German guns, some clearly went numb with focus and don't really remember what they felt, some mention the huge breakfast they were all served, (and ensuing nausea), others don't mention it all, etc. Fascinating how people's memories of intense, life changing experiences vary.

Funny story. A vet l knew enlisted right after Pearl ready to fight. Spent over three years as an anti aircraft gunner in Northern England and never saw a plane. He always claimed the Germans were too afraid to send a single plane his way.

Omaha beach was very heavily defended, so was Sword, Juno and Gold, but here's the thing with Omaha not only was there machine guns of every sort n caliber firing out forwards, they were also able to fire across, please check out Paul Woodage at ww2 tv for more information..

When Sgt. Victor Henry Fast wore his uniform to the Mennonite church and got shunned, he was the better man for leaving and not mingling with the pacifists inside. 🤠
