I love how simple you've made this for people. Since you get more unique clients that have diverse needs, I suspect you use the clean feeds more than me. But this is super helpful to show clients who want to understand the differences so they can at least communicate "I need a clean/dirty feed to X location".
Just stoped by to wish you Happy Hollidays from Sweden. And thank you for a year with so many good and informative videos. I really shouldn’t work now so I’ll check this video out next week. 🙂🎄
Thanks for the detailed explanation of clean feed video outputs. What I'm wondering is which stereo audio sources are embedded in each of the PGM, AUX, and channel SDI outputs on ATEM switchers. I know the PGM output contains the built-in audio mixer output, but what about AUX output switching? Does it contain audio from the AUX selected source, or is it the same mixed-down audio as the PGM output? Likewise with the individual channel SDI outputs, do they all have mixed-down output on audio channels 1+2, along with talk-back audio on channels 15-16?
All of the outputs contain program audio (Left and Right). The one exception to this is the new Television Studio HD8, which allows you to map other audio channels onto the various SDI output channels.
@@djp_video - Great, thanks. So if you for example set AFV on video input 1, you'll get audio from input 1 on both PGM and AUX outputs whenever video input 1 is ON AIR on PGM?
Does the Clean feed only effect the down stream keyers ?? does it still pass the up stream keyers ?? if so ... can they be eliminated somewhere in the software ?? Thanks
Upstream keys are included in the Clean Feeds. There's no way around this, as they're already mixed into the video signal before the transition block of the switcher, before the clean feeds are tapped.
Hi Doug! Thanks so much for your videos. I have a quick question that may or may not have a simple answer. I think I know the answer, but I want to get a clear yes, no or...sort of. Are Upstream Keys considered part of the "clean feed"? Can you get a clean feed without Upstream keying? We have a BMD Constellation 8k for reference. Thanks so much again!!
Upstream keys are applied before the signal path reaches the Clean Feed stage. So there's no "clean feed" for Upstream Keys. That's by design -- otherwise the USK couldn't be mixed in before the transition. The simplified signal flow through ATEM switchers goes like this: Video source -> Upstream Key 4, 3, 2, then 1, Transition effect, (Clean feed 1 tap), Downstream Key 1, (Clean feed 2 tap), Downstream Key 2, Fade to Black
Very interesting video, but I have a question for you. If I make a multicam with three cameras, two entering the atem via hdmi, and one entering via a wireless transmitter like the mars400, how do I delay the two hdmi input cameras so that all three are in perfect sync?
Thank you for the exposé on clean and dirty feed. Please I've had this concern on my M/E2 blackmagic switcher, My clean feed still carries a media graphics stamp on it after my video production recoding, please how do I get rid of this entirely from my clean feed recording to have no stamp in my clean mix. Thanks as I get your poss solution feedback on this issue
If you're using an Upstream key (USK) to create it, there's nothing you can do to prevent it from being included on a Clean Feed output. The Clean Feed functionality only omits elements added using the DSK.
😮 didn’t know this was even possible! If using upstream key, is this is simple swap to downstream? We use an ATEM 1 M/E and put lyrics on screen, BUT if edit in post these limit my options - I’m not sure if we use up or down stream to accomplish.
That depends on the type of key you're using. If you're doing a Luma key, it can just be moved straight across -- the DSKs have the same capabilities. But if you're doing Chroma key, that feature isn't supported in the ATEM switchers on the DSK. Generally speaking, overlays that are meant to stay on screen through transitions between shots are handled in a DSK, but that doesn't have to be the case.
if the lyrics are there in post there's a high chance they're being mixed on an upstream key, I have had to navigate this issue myself. We use DSK1 for lyrics and record a clean feed.
Great stuff! I’m working on expanding SDI workflows. I think you’ll like what I’m making. Would love to get your feedback! Let me know if you like the idea of testing it :).
There are ways of putting some pieces together to make this happen, like using triggers in Companion. But nothing supported natively by Blackmagic Design.
@@djp_videothanks, yes that is the one option I was also looking at, this is a problem for people like me who have started on HDMI and have level up to all SDI environment. So always looking for a second opinion before getting another equipment.
I'd need more details about your setup to help you figure out your recording issue. For the switcher to connect to the recorder they need to have unique IP addresses that are in the same network. So the first three numbers in the IP addresses have to match but the last number needs to be different... such as 192.168.10.10 for the switcher and 192.168.10.30 for the HyperDeck.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering what the difference was but have never been asked for clean feeds yet.

Doug, I love you I was about to buy a whole other switcher lol thank you for making this content i need this lol your the best honestly
Thank you for sharing we really appreciate you
Great video Doug!
Thanks mate 👍
cheers thanks. great content
Much thanks sir

There's no easy, practical, affordable way to do that. The better solution is to get a wireless system with no latency.
hello, sir we need to know how can we make a self-hosting server that others view any device anywhere. Not Rtmp, with SRT compatible.
