Going into Star Wars Rebels I wasn't all that impressed with Kanan initially but the character really grew on me. I liked that he wasn't just the wise old master who had all the answers for Ezra. Jedis are not allowed to be in romantic relationships which is one of the reasons Anakin turned to the dark side. Star Wars Rebels should have focused more on Kanan and Ezra and less on Kanan and Hera.
@@rcbrascan That's not the reason. The reason is that Anakin was dealt with terrible circumstances in his life that were mostly the Jedi's fault and he responded with terrible choices thus turning into both a villain and a victim.
Rebels and related media is super poetic - Depa sacrifices herself for Kanan, Kanan sacrifices himself for his adopted family Phoenix Squadron, and Ezra "sacrifices" himself for the Rebel Alliance - masters and apprentices
Jarrus died a few hours before the explosion of the fuel depot. In the episode before his death a wolf stopped his attempted rescue of Hera by saying "Dume", which forced Kanan to realize that he had to fully accept his role as a Jedi Knight. In his last episode we see Kanan cut off his ponytail, the last vestige of his role as a Padawan. He then shaves off his beard, symbolically taking off his "Kanan Jarrus" persona which used to disguise his Jedi past. He realized that he could not move forward until he let go of the guilt and feelings of inadequacy that had plagued him since he watched his Master Depa Billaba die to give him time to escape the events of Order 66. When he joins Ezra and Sabine at the beginning of the rescue Hera, he has truly become Jedi Knight Caleb Dume, and Kanan Jarrus is gone. When he dies he is at peace and fully accepts his fate.
Kanan’s story, and that of the rebels crew is the same: family and identity. But Kanan’s is probably the harshest. He was a Jedi who could not be a Jedi, forcing himself to forget who he is. And even when he started to accept it, he was faced with one trial after another. The shame of teaching without much knowledge, the trauma of the clone wars and his ability to join another fight and of course the loss of his sight. Eventually all of those things help him be what he was supposed to be, a Jedi with a sense of belonging, compassion and self sacrifice. So enlightened that he is able to restore his sight and even express some of his will through the cosmic force, proving that if he had lived a few decades earlier, he probably would have gotten himself a seat in the Jedi council.
I think Filoni really well portrayed Kanan's growing process and his growing pains as a Jedi. You see Kanan's attitude change from season to season, eventually becoming more comfortable with his role as a true Jedi Knight and Master. I do sometimes wonder since he forsaw his own death, did he wonder if Ezra would train his son? :)
Holly Sullivan most Likely since he says may the force be with you is the last thing he says to Ezra, but Ezra wasn’t even doing the hard part of the mission.
K Williams same here. I only wish that other members of Ghost squad had such great treatment (Hera is the only other one that is decent. The others just suck)
After watching Rebels and seeing the episode where Hera got taken by the Empire, it was really sad to see Kanan pass away and sacrifice his life for the Rebellion. Also the moment when Kanan reveals he was a Jedi is unforgettable. You missed one of the best moments of the second season, Ahsoka who reveals finally her self to the Inquisitors, that’s a really Amazing moment, because we see how much Ahsoka have grown, not only in the fighting also in her power.
Could Jacen have been one of Lukes students that Kylo either killed or turned? Or do you think he would have been too old by then? Even though luke was older when he started his training?
he would be in his 30s much much older then Luke, while not impossible I believe legends Kyle Katarn learned around that age as well in Dark Forces 2(he was at least in his 20s Luke was 18/19 when he started, not sure when he met Yoda tho).
Zero Cool Jacen could have been one of the instructors of Luke's academy. Just like his father he could have died trying to protect the students from Kylo Ren. Which would suck for Hera if that were the case.
Zero Cool I’m a year late but you’re wrong. Jacen was born about 7-9 months after Kanan died, and he looks to be about 8-10 in the scene which is after the battle of endor I believe making him 17-18 years younger than Luke. Ezra is actually younger than Luke and Leia if you go by the one episode Leia is in and she’s like 16-17 while Ezra is 14? So idk how you think jacen who is born when Ezra is 16-17 at the time making Leia & Luke 18-19 older than that kid... Remember as well that Luke & Leia we’re born at the end of ROTS, the events of rebels are like 10 years after ROTS and the events of ROTJ is like 25 years after ROTS... jacen would be far younger than Luke.
Alex, it would be cool if you did a video on the complete story of Jyn, seeing as she is one of the very few characters we have seen from birth to death, with her entire life in between, in canon.
I believe he covered her well not very in depth like this video did but well enough that he when't over her full history in a single video, and it is not all that interesting.
i always thought that was more of a pet name...or something she only called him when she was annoyed at him. but yeah it was always implied but never the 3 most important words. ;) .
If you haven't done Ezra already that one will be good... Showing his growth in the force and his maturity... Also, I am surprised that he didn't do more dark force stuff during the show, after he showed that he could master it without going fully to the dark side... I think that that would have been very interesting... Like the grey Jedi who would draw from both sides...
Dave did that to show if you have people beside you and care about you then it’s harder to turn. Anakin didn’t have that when he told master Yoda that someone close to him is gonna die, Yoda legit said eh who cares suck it up.
I hadn't realized that Kanan being able to see Hera that once last time before his death was the fulfillment of his promise...that just makes the scene that much more beautiful! Thanks for mentioning that! Now I have to go cry... ;)

Nice video! I remember I have the comic book where Kanan switches from youngling to padawan. This comic book also includes a story of Luke Skywalker in Nar Shadaa.
+SonsOfLorgar I took it that way as well, but I believe Cruz is implying they show up after finding Ezra and I got the impretion at the end of rebels they were about to leave to find him. Also highly doubt we see anyone familar in IX or any training of Rey
I had an idea re-watching this last season, what if Hera gives birth at Scarif? I feel like she is already a few weeks pregnant at the time of Kanan's death, and that feels like a 'Star Wars' thing to do. Rogue One sacrifices themselves and among all this death, in the middle of a space battle, little Jacen is born. That would give a very personal story to the Ghost crew's Scarif experience. Hera is super pregnant, kicking ass in the Ghost until her water breaks, probably as the Death Star arrives, for dramatic reasons, then like Rex and Sabine have to coach her through labour, while Zeb and Wolf and whoever else is on the crew at the time have to maintain the Ghost and achieve their objective before getting out right in the nick of time. It would be neat if Jacen was actually born in hyperspace, like right as they jump.
Not entirely. Despite the presence of the Bad Batch and some changes to the time of day and certain visual designs, the key story beats still happen. The clones turn on the Jedi, Billaba tells Caleb to run, and he escapes. They even remembered not to kill off Commander/Captain Grey so his story arc still fits.
His arc with Hera made it clear that he was a goner, but it added so much emotion to it, especially considering how it appears that he never retained his consciousness after speaking to Ezra through the wolf. He never got to see his son, never got to be happy with Hera, and he left behind a family in the darkest hour of the galaxy's story. A very sad, but very appropriate ending.
Although I am late to this video are we just gonna ignore the fact that Hera and Kanan literally done the deed you need to have a child before they told each other they loved each other?
You know some relationships are complicated. And I think Kanan was clear about his feelings (he was in the New Dawn book too)... it's just Hera kept trying to put the mission first, but I guess they shared some nights together anyway.
I don't think so. We know he and Thrawn survived, so there are still thing we don't have about him to make Ezra's story, I mean, he was only 17-18 at the end of Rebels. And who knows where did he ended up with Thrawn and what happened after.
Zero Cool the jedi youngling tempel started at the end of return of the jedi but the ending of rebels takes place after return of the jedi so he would be old enough.........
Not using the Rebels/Clone Wars writers and producers in the new sequels was the biggest mistake Disney ever made. I thought that these shows were a joke because I could never sit through an hour of uber annoying kids commercials to watch 25 minutes of content. Now that these shows are on Disney + I have watched every single episode and enjoyed them immensely. These shows capture the essence of what Star Wars, and the Force are 1000x more than The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi could've ever hoped for. Dave Filoni and company obviously cared more about the deep stories that brought Star Wars into our hearts 40 years ago as opposed to JJ Abrams and Ruin Johnson who were SO disconnected from the original message and vibe that Star Wars gave to us fans. I hope that these people are allowed to be more of a part in the direction of the franchise than just the Mandolorian show.
When hera first sees that kannan cut his hair short when he rescues in "Jedi knight" she says "you're hair hasn't been this shot since we first met". Does this conflict with any with the story of when those characters first met? I always assumed he had his son tail there too.
I would love to see biographies like this for Sloan, Brendol Hux, Poe Dameron and Temmin "Snap" Wexley although I will give some may be harder than others since some of these characters still have ongoing stories
Eh. Idk- it’s a close value to me since season 4 is decent at best. Better than the other 3 seasons for sure, but it still can’t compete with a single season of Clone Wars.

He went out fighting and protecting his friends and his love he was a true jedi.
Man Kanans death was super sad, he is my fav character in rebels, badass way to go tho
I miss Rebels
May I have a moment of silence for Kanan Juarus/kalub Doom.......Rest In piece
I hope episode 9 has snips and Ezra pop out of hyper speed, train Ray and the next gen of force users. Circle as complete as possible.
Cruz DeLeon technically, Snips returned somewhere between ep 6&7 if I understand the epilogue of the final Rebels episode correctly.
+SonsOfLorgar I took it that way as well, but I believe Cruz is implying they show up after finding Ezra and I got the impretion at the end of rebels they were about to leave to find him. Also highly doubt we see anyone familar in IX or any training of Rey
Zero Cool agreed they will probably not return, it was just a fools hope. Also Hack the Planet!
Well if you want to end it full circle, have Ahsoka be at the end taking Luke’s place with her hood on.
Snip? Idiot. She has a name
.. try AHSOKA
I loved this show so much.
I like Kanan, especially his unconventional father/son relationship ship with Ezra.
Some of the best comics i’ve read so far
Kanan was my favorite character from rebels
Star Wars explained is now retconned by the Bad Batch
Mikey Henno yeahhh......
You know some relationships are complicated. And I think Kanan was clear about his feelings (he was in the New Dawn book too)... it's just Hera kept trying to put the mission first, but I guess they shared some nights together anyway.
Rest in peace… Caleb Dune
I guess Filoni didn’t like how the back story was.
Still annoying how Caleb’s hair, Bilaba’s lightsaber, and Style’s existence were changed
You should totally do Ezra's story at some point
I don't think so. We know he and Thrawn survived, so there are still thing we don't have about him to make Ezra's story, I mean, he was only 17-18 at the end of Rebels. And who knows where did he ended up with Thrawn and what happened after.
@@sofialu226 we might see soon enough. Its possible they are doing a live action rebels spin off.
Gonna have to redo this video since they retconned order 66 for Kanan
Kanen the last Padawan. Cal kestis casually taking on the empire single handed
Could Hera have sent her son,Jason Syndulla,to Luke as one of his students in his new Jedi academy?
Dun dun duuuuuuu😱
It's spelled Jacen, like Jacen Solo from Legends.
Fredward and The Bear seinfeild music plays.....
Zero Cool the jedi youngling tempel started at the end of return of the jedi but the ending of rebels takes place after return of the jedi so he would be old enough.........
Muhd Imran
Plot twist,
Jacen *NOT* Kanan's child
Its definitely chopper
Who’s here after the bad batch?
I am.
Me
Could you please do a complete story of Ahsoka Tano?
Caleb’s line of apprentices and master was a line of sacrifices
I guess you can say that Kanan didn’t *SEE* maul’s attack coming
Darth Porg, Sith Lord I hate you.
Honestly he should’ve been the main character of Rebels. He was way more compelling than Ezra ever was.
“They’ll see each other again”
*Curb Your Blindness
*Literally curbs blindness*
Drank heavily and flew everywhere. Sounds like my cousin😂
When hera first sees that kannan cut his hair short when he rescues in "Jedi knight" she says "you're hair hasn't been this shot since we first met". Does this conflict with any with the story of when those characters first met? I always assumed he had his son tail there too.
Revilod 2000 yeah in a new dawn it’s clearly stated he had long hair. But idk plot whole I guess.
Thanks for putting this in order! The comics skip around a lot and can get really confusing
"Mom, can we get some Kyle Katarn?"
"We have Kyle Katarn at home."
Kyle Katarn at home:
I would love to see biographies like this for Sloan, Brendol Hux, Poe Dameron and Temmin "Snap" Wexley although I will give some may be harder than others since some of these characters still have ongoing stories
Star Wars Rebels season 4 was better than Episode 7, 8, & 9 combined.
Eh. Idk- it’s a close value to me since season 4 is decent at best. Better than the other 3 seasons for sure, but it still can’t compete with a single season of Clone Wars.
